  • My gut feeling is that it was a wolf-dog hybrid of some type.

  • Good for you all. Allowing these scientist to experiment with the genome. Creating thes new kinds of beings. What will they think of next. recycling you into food?

  • Reptilian.

  • Chastel succeeded where every other hunter had failed, in a scenario that sounds impossible. Sitting in a clearing late in the morning (how many hunters would do that? sunup and sundown are the prime times to 'stand' or 'still' hunt), he encounters La Bete. It strolls up and waits to be shot. Why? Because he called it. It was his animal, it knew him, it trusted him, it did his bidding. And he shot it.

  • I dont like the old man. He looks so fucking crazy.

  • Definately seems humans are behind it. Not really believe in Werewolves though could be an human carying an wolf skin or something similar. Can see why Werewolf myth really rose up in this time period.

  • @Spartiatai300 yes, but the truth is that is is very unlikely werewolves exist due to the fact bones would have to change to have a wolf shape. Or a snout

  • This might also explain the similer killings in other areas.

  • i reckon its just to calcutated to be a dog, or even a trained dog, back then u wuldnt have been able to tell the diffrence between a body thats been malled by a human or a dog. maybe the wolf hunters son was a sadistic murderer. (hence all the random killings neer his place) then was picked up by the duke to spread fear thruout france. then in return the duke helped him get away with it by blaming a dog?

  • Though totally unlikely, the Andrewsarchus theory will always be my favourite.

  • Perhaps it wasn't a wolf-dog cross but a wolf-hyena cross? Or perhaps The Chastels created the cross and the Count loaned them a hyena? In some reports the main beast was followed by a smaller one, maybe both were used to throw other hunters off the scent?

  • you cannot cross hyeanas and wolfs, because hyenas are related to cats.

they beats was killed and studied, it has another number of teeth than a hyeana. the beast was 45 kilos heave, and reddish.

  • I thought hyenas were in their own genus, could a striped hyena jump over walls? One thing that puzzles me is why would the Chastels kill the beast? Their plot was working so why would they cut it short, unless they had more than one beast and sold the excess beasts to other counts and nobles in other parts of France to keep the killing spree going

  • that is still a mystery today. Chastel was known as an aggressive an criminal person who went to prison because of attempted murder. It is sad that the people on this show did not talk about that. He and his sons were the suspects in this area. Because during the huntings, he was thrown in jail. During that time the killings became rare. Maybe at last, he was afraid of getting caught. the beast finally came near the village and risked to be seen with its 'master'. The animal knew him.

  • These times hunters tried to cross wolves with dogs in order to create the perfect 'hunters. But such mixes were useless for hunting, they were too wild. the beast was known for its 'dog-wolf like behaviour. It was barking like a dog, it was waving its tail, yet it did not fear humans and killed without eating or devouring every single victim cpmpletely. No hyena can be trained. Strangely most of the victims were women some even had their clothes lying next them, folded. No animal could do that.

  • Could it have been a watered down hybrid, 1/4 or 1/8th wolf? Perhaps the beast did the killing and then the Count or whoever came along and did whatever sick thing they wanted to the body,t hen reclothed them, etc

  • Chastel trained the beast or his sons did. He was the hunter in his area and I can imagine he raped the women, children and he used the beast to get his victims. It was a combination beast-.man

  • If it was a wolf-dog hybrid, what dog breed would he have crossed it with to get an animal like the beast?

  • it was in the 18 th cnetury, people did not really had 'dog breeds', ,most were pure bastards. I guess it was a reddish dog, big, robust, maybe a shepherd dog. Or a dogue, nobody really knows, the dog maybe looked like a wolf. But as I said, there were very few true 'breeds'. I cannot tell, and the people these days could not tell either. It had to be a heavy dog, since the beast was over 49 kilos heavy. wolfs only weigh 45 kilos

  • Here is a theory: the serial killer would kill the victim and then allow the hyena to scavenge the body. Thereby removing evidence of human involvement in the murders. His motive could have been anything...sexual sadist maybe.

  • personally i think its a combination of maybe a little conspiracy, a hyena, and a killer in wolf skins.

the wolf-dog hybrid theory sounds all fine and dandy till you think about the description of the creature. too many accounts describe it as looking like a striped hyena to discount it. not to mention the killings stopped after the hyena was shot. but some accounts say that women were raped and then killed. a serial killer could have done these and blamed it on the beast. all are plausible.

  • I think some of these theories are more akin to a conspiracy theory and like most conspiracy theories they can't be proven. In order to prove these connections there has to be some witnesses or documents or rumors from separate sources. Incidentally one show I watched claimed Chastel was a Protestant not Catholic. This show just focused on Chastel and the count, not any other theories.

  • i think it was the serial killer theory.

  • wouldn't it be great if we had a time machine and watched it with our own eyes what it was?

  • @Loco4everHolmes a littel but would you want to see that? Is the question.

  • Here's a theory: Chastel is nearby and orders the beast to attack. Then he runs off and leaves a trail that a human wouldn't be able to follow (like a scented trail with drippings from a piece of meat), The beast kills the victim(s) and then outruns the hunters back to Chastel. Chastel then has a huge lead, and can easily outmaneuver the other hunters.

  • It wasn't anything "created' by man at all. It was one of those weird animals that walk upright like a man like that thing seen in Kentucky, Montreal and northeastern Maine and southern Indiana....Northern Michigan and South East Wisconsin. A "were wolf' but not in the historical sense, but a behaviorial sense and the way it looks.

  • Done by humans, copy cat killers and or people within the original groups circle, other preverted nobles or the same ones and they just moved to different ~hunting grounds..

  • it have to be a murder gone mad and killed everyone on it's way.

  • there is a fairly good film relating to this, called brotherhood of the wolf

  • Is it really worth watching?

  • um could any of you tell me what the end is cause its driving me crazy each time i close my eyes my imagination scares the crap out of me example i close my eyes and i sudennly remember the beast and i open my eyes scared/i still think its spotted hyena /striped hyena crossbreed

  • In fact the beast made 300 attacks killing 120 people in 3 years... So, many people survived the attacks. none of the survivor or witnesses (Many attacks occured in the center of villages) have talked of a wolf to describe the beast. At this time in Gevaudan the wolf was a very common animal andf each of the inhabitants knew what it looks like.

  • This video lacks a part of the theory given by the Zoo of Amneville director. In fact according to his research the beast could have wore some kind of armour made of wild hog skins like the one used for war dog during the renaissance wars. In fact the beast had been shot many times in his body and each time it fell down then ran away.. This armour of wild hog skin could explain the red hairs stripe on its body..The beast killed by Jean Chastel had no stripe cause the armour was removed.

  • yes the beast killed by chastel had a stripe and redish fur with a white patch on its chest

  • Ahh that guy is a complete shocker!! Reminds me of the colonel off the kfc sign.

I hate the way he moves his eyes when he's trying to make a point

  • IMO it was a wolf-dog cross, maybe it was trained as an attack dog and escaped by accident or the count set it loose on purpose, just because he could

  • if it was a dog they would of caught it

  • What I want to know is, if Chastel bred and trained this beast, and it would've taken a few years at elast to raise it and train it, how come no-one noticed it? A calf sized carnivore with a taste for people isn't something you can keep in your back garden

  • The Chastel were feared by the people at this time, they were considered as some kind of wizard. People called them "Meneurs de loups" (Wolves leaders)Even today the Gevaudan is a very wild area when you can hide very easily, with mountains, big forests, cliffs, marecages. They were working as Forest Guards and didn't live in a village but in an very isolated house. Among all they were one of the rare family allow to carry rifles at this time, and people feared to get shot by them.

  • Knowlege seems to be the key that opens all doors. You know quite alot about this. Its actually really cool.

  • yes and if chastel trained this dog he would of had to be close by during the attacks

never once in the 300 or so attacks was a man with the beast

  • If he'd trained the beast himself and it was personally loyal to him, he could hide away nearby and wait for it to finish, then call it back to him when it was done, dogs can be trained to return by hearing a particular sound or even with a dog whistle and a woodsman would know the area very well, easily well enough to hide where no-one would notice him. And what are terrified people more likely to notice, the calf sized beast or a man hiding up a tree or in a thicket?

  • not true if you read the real story and the books on the subject you would of realized most attacks were public and after the beast attacked groups of people would often chase it off the person he was savaging so no a man could of not hid the beast it would of taken the people right to the man!

  • Maybe Chastel ditched it in an area and after it had carried out several attacks he'd come back and pick it up, ostensibly under the pretense of tracking it since he was one of the people meant to be out hunting the beast. Some serial killers insert themselves into investigations and it's be the perfect cover for Chastel to act in. Beast shows up, locals chase it off, call in Chastel to find it, he goes and retrieves it with the villagers none the wiser

  • no though still it would not of been able to escape thousands of huntsmen not to mention the best hunters in the country at that time were on its tail for years and years trying to catch it

this beast played with them it killed women right in front of hunters and ran off laughing

  • I doubt it was that intelligent, and not a human in a wolfskin, people would've noticed, maybe a feral child at a VERY long shot. Even if the best hunters in France were called in, Chastel knew thwe terrain of the area, they didn't, and as the vid shows, the killings were in clusters, implying Chastel might have dropped it off in an area for a few weeks or months, then come and collected it later on. If it was a trained animal it must've been very well trained

  • It was definiately the work of terrorists, I believe it was Al Quadia (no sure of spellling)

  • If the area had a large population of wolves a killer could simply kill the pesants with a knife or gun and leave the body to be eaten by the wild animals

  • Nice!!!! i think it was a reputidly extinct creature.

  • a dinosaur! a dinosaur! XD

  • it coudn't be a hyena, they eat almost everything on a carcus not just the entrails

  • if you're not hungry you eat only the good parts right?

  • i think that it wasn't a wolfdog, because all of the pictures and information i've looked up does not show that kind of tail. im not sure why, but i think it could be a heyena hybrid, because looking at the drawing, it does look like a striped heyena, and possibly have been bred with a dog and then trained to kill. just a thought...

  • lol i spelled hyena wrong

  • Hyena cannot be bred with dog. You can breed only extremly close related species, like dog and wolf or horse and donkey. I dont think you could even breed different species of hyenas with each other.

  • like i said, just a thought

  • that is a good sujestion.....it might be that, but mabe also it could be a lion heyena hybrid, because of the tale and the body is long

  • they can't bred, hyena's are closer in relation to cat then to canines, but not close enough

  • They aren't related to canines or cats, Tarbtano.

  • Nope, when you go into the group Carnivoria, it splits into two groups. Dog-like predators (Bears, Canines, Raccoons, etc.) and cat-like carnivores (Hyenas, weasels, felines, etc.) So yes Hyenas are related to cat, but like I said, not closer enough to breed

  • Dogs can't breed with hyenas.

  • i think it was a raptor

  • It could have been a pork pie.

  • An EVIL pork pie.

  • .....mightve a been a psycho serial killer and fed the beast human flesh and have not fed the beast for a long period of time and it wanted another taste of human flesh and thats maybe why it is able to eat human flesh. Look in ancient history, starving dogs can feed off of the flesh of humans. but no matter what the theory maybe, it is still a mystery.

  • ......and the master mightve dosed the beast with that substance making it big, strong, and aggressive, so maybe given that substance, it is able to tear a human to shreds and give the beast its monsterous size. And with the dog traits, it is not afriad of humans, and can have the obedince of a dog and the master.........

  • I Still think the beast is a crossbreed, becasue looking at steroids, athletes in ancient greece used a steroidal substance to make them more athletic and it couldve been that the beast's master might have got a hold of that substance.......

  • i agree, im thinking its still a lion because a wolf's jaw or a cross breed wouldn't be able to expand its jaw wide enough to engulf a human head all around. the only animal i know with the description of the tail is a lion..

  • @morningPMshow

It was not a lion. The beast was smallest than a lion by far.

It was a wolf/dog hybrid, trained by a man, like they said.

  • but what if (considering the suspects of murder were aristocrats and very rich) one of these people had taken their own lion to perform the murders? It would not have been considered escaped. I think it fits, as the original art and depiction of the creature describes something more lion-like than something related to a canine. A lion too, I think, would be happier to kill in that way. (Again, genetics would not have allowed for a creature that is originally described.)

  • I must be the only one to still think it was a lion. The genetics to create a wolf-dog hybrid that looks like the original description (red fur, white stripe down the chest, slender tail, powerful) just doesn't exist. You can't breed a wolf and a dog (no matter the breed) to get a tuffed tail and a stripe that goes down the chest. Dogs (and wolves) at the time did not have those markings, nor the genetic ability to produce such abnormalities. A lion was not reported to have escaped (continued)

  • Does anyone know where I can download this series? I cant find it anywhere!

  • It's most likely three things:

    1. Wild wolves, more inclined to attack humans back then

    2. A wolf-dog hybrid

    3. Serial killers taking advantage of the chaos. Not too sure about the conspiracies, since I'm not well-versed in the history of the era.

  • GIMP

  • haha

    the fiendish count,

sounds an awful lot like hes saying something else. great video?!

    spooku

  • Sweet!
