Box2D is superb. I was also making my own but switched to Box2D when I found it.
The legs are just rays cast downwards to find the ground, two gives a much more believable result than one in the center.
Right now I'm making AI to control enemy characters, so I found your navigating flier quite interesting. I have a bit more to deal with though - jumping, crouching, ladders, water etc. Hopefully my next video will show some of this.
Looking good! how have you found box2d? I tried XNA farseer a while ago but found it kinda.. twitchy, so I've been writing my own. But this looks pretty solid. Are the legs placeholders or are you going to keep them like that? Hopefully soon I'll get around to doing procedural physics based walking animations..
