@intheblues hey man, I have a fender stage 160, a pretty standard solid state and can't get anywhere close to this tone. What would you suggest in terms of possible pedals or new amps? The thing about mayer's style is that he solos with not a single distorted note and I can't model it. I know it sounds picky to want the same exact sound, but do you have any suggestions such as a blues driver or anything? Thanks for your help!
Yes it does help, Many Thanks. I enjoyed your Guitar playing-well done.
I've had too many problems with my Hot Rod deluxe..the reverb's gone again, if I get it fixed, I will have spent as much money on repairs, as it costs to buy a new one! There was a design fault apparently..The new models are supposed to be better. It's put me off Fender, so am looking for a valve head/ 2x12 set-up...any thoughts/ideas appreciated. Thanks again, I want to hear more of your guitar playing..
@intheblues yeah i searched on the internet and I found out that the white version was limited... that's right, right? lol I love this amp and especially in white version :). Im going to check out your videos right now :) thanks
@gaiolinn The point of it is to try and use your ear. All amps and speakers are different. Amps all sound different at various volumes too. My EQ setting for that room, that volume and my guitar is totally different to what someone else will have.
@intheblues Thing is, we have te exact same amp (unless you changed the hardware) and the exact same pickups.
I got the tone pretty close to yours (rest of guitar might be different as well and the room is surely different too) that's why I kind of wanted to know what the guitar settings were so I could check if that "almost there" was tone problem.
i get a really sweet John Mayer tone with a Fender Bassman a holy grail reverb pedal and a Fender ami standard strat mixed with an Ibanez Ts-9.
I think you can get a Mayer tone out of every Fender amp + Fender Strat, just put the midds down and use at least 10s sting gauge i use 11s. The rest comes from the fingers.
Nice Playing by the way you really nailed the fender tone!

for a more mayerish tone you've gotta boost the treble a little along with turning up the bass and rolling back the mids...otherwise the mids aren't truly scooped. also playing with the strat tone knobs will get you there
do you necessarily have to use your amp (dont know what version it is of thehot rod series) or can you use a other hot rod to get the similar tone (well........more or less)?
The amp he is using in the fender hot rod deluxe white lightning. Fender made 800 of them world wide. The only real difference it has from a stock black one is that it comes with a celestion G12 Century Vintage speaker.
@OliverRayVaughan thanks man. We have enough people trying to copy some of the blues greats, Id rather add some originality to it. :) + I am not John Mayer either so yeah :) Cheers man!
I'm not bashing your playing bro, especially because I respect what you're doing with these videos, but you're totally playing the song wrong..unless you're playing the lower then higher harmonies. Correct me if I'm wrong haha :)
Loved this - thanks for posting! I have the same amp - except in Texas Red. The HR Deluxe often gets put down but you've just proved it's more than capable of producing a fantastic sound. Who the hell has $8K for a Two Rock anyway. Great playing - thanks for sharing.
@guitarjim74 the white, green and tweed ones sound 10x nicer than the black ones! the speakers make all the difference. :) Cheers for some nice comments mate.

@guitarjim74 this is the best amp out their for the money, people who slate it are normally beginners, as a proper musician knows the hrdx has a great tone, I am selling my for the simple reason it is to loud for bedroom use, getting a deluxe reverb or prince-tone reverb in its place, probable the deluxe reverb tho
@MrAlexito95 NO, just awful close to the tone, especially towards the end. Real close to the Slow Dancing clip with John in the Two Rock factory. Come on man, were talking $599 vs. north of $8K! Just goes to show you, solid foundational Fender clean tone gets you most of the way there. Remember, John recorded it with VibroKings on the original record.
@yjmsrv There were no vibro kings used on continuum . What are your sources? I've got pictures of all the amps used. There was a Marshall, Deluxe reverb and a Custom Reverb but no vibro. I assure you, 95% of all the cleans on that cd were Two Rock!
wow. this amp seems to have the perfect natural compression. i've spent €100's on various compressor pedals inc Keeley and boss, maxon and mxr. cant get close to this natural compression. Great tone man. well done
Great video, show others you don't need a $5K AMP, just a little talent, a nice strat with good pickups and a good clean tone foundation. I just use a Ceriatone 50-watt OTS, Replica Delay, Dr Scientist Reverb and Dumkudo OD pedal, while still having my own tone.
