  • EGR I meant

  • EGR I meant

  • Did you use a plate or something to bypass the ERG system

  • how much Bhp???

  • one thing beneficial to an 87 Fiero 25 yrs old is to lube up all the suspension connections and you will see what a 4 wheel independant suspension isall about

  • title should read: dad shows son how to catch 2nd in a 2.8! awesome!

  • the sound of the V6 is awesome!!

  • Is that stock exhaust and if it isent what kind

  • I would just like to up-date everyone on my car and my learning curve since this video. My advise: Don't do this to your stock Fiero, it just wasn't made for it. In 1967 I built a very hot '55 Chevy by dropping one of Jim Hall's Chevy Chaparral hypo 327, a real race care. When I took my little Fiero off the line with perfect speed shifts, that was a big mistake. Ever since, my synchros have been getting worse, and harder to get into the higher gears and shift down, which I do allot of.

  • @Hypo327 Do you mean don't drop the clutch like that or don't do the upgrades? I have an 86 that looks exactly like this but it is a three speed. I want to perk it up a little and was planning on doing these upgrades. Any advise is appreciated.

  • @Hypo327 try adjusting your shift cables first before tearing apart the transmission..

  • NO MORE E CHECKS FOR 87 LIKE MINE BUT I WONDER IF IT WOULD PAS S

  • I miss the Real Cars. Todays Cars are Crapp and no fun to Drive.

  • @buttmanroad You need to drive some good ones then my friend, because there's allot of them. Mostly foreign though I'm afraid. My son's girl friend just bought a 2009 low mileage Subaru, and it's really nice to drive. For the most part though I'd have to agree with you. The new Vettes are a really nice car, but how many can afford them?

  • Wow. I love these engines that was amazing. I have a 3.1L MPFI in my pontiac 6000 any idea on would i can do to make her more eff. and more power.

  • if the idiots that were in charge of pontiac had stuck with pontiac`s original formula, namely no nonsense affordable and rugged sports cars like the fiero here, and did not produce such garbage as aztec, torrent etc. instead , im sure the iconic pontiac brand would still be around today. a small light corner drifting fiero, a big rearwheel drive trans am and maybe a special edition model once in a while would do perfectly for the brand, i hope it returns some day, us true car guys deserve it.

  • That 2.8 needs an XLerator Turbo muffler it sounds great! check my video.

  • Where is the ground effects/side skirt under the doors?

  • Where is the ground effects/side skirt under the doors?

  • @clborg88 It's a Cardone distributor, built to factory specs., but much sturdier built. ECM stays the same.

  • fiero's aren't open differential? is that a GT thing or is that standard?

  • @scottyb400 I'm not sure about the stock transaxle specs., but it seems to have some positraction qualities, but always drifts to the right when taking off. I've noticed this in other cars using the Getrag. They first put the 1987 Getrag up-grade in the late '86's like mine. The Getrag was standard in the GT & Formula beginning with '87 as far as I know.

  • I like how Fieros have the same weight distribution+curb weight as 1.000.000+ Koenigseggs

    curb weight only around 1250kg (V6) @ 57% to the rear !

Koenigsegg CCX curb weight: 1280kg and also 57% to the rear if I remember correctly. now keep in mind those Koenigseggs smoke even supersportsbikes with their 6 speed manual transmissions @ S/C 4.7L Ford Modular V8. overall you could probably swap the same engine into the fiero since there are DOHC 4.6L Fieros. Koenigsegg replica anyone ?

  • When i get old, i want to be like this guy!

  • Comment removed

  • oh ok that makes seance but i just recently put a supercharger on my 2.8 (witch you can see if you go to my page i uploaded a video) and i am looking into getting a chip made anyway so i will look in to that thank you

  • very nice fiero I wish mine was the 2.8l they have more performance parts for them I just got done building my 2.5l so she should have more pep considering when I pulled the engine I had bad compression on three cylinders and that Iron duke was running strong

  • '

why this taillight is too dark

  • @clborg88 its all preference any how

  • @clborg88 All depends on how much performance you want. Most modern sports cars on the road today will blow away the 2.8 Fiero, but you can blow-away most every one else with a 3800 SC II swap.

  • Respond to this video... I've had to replace three throttle position sensors. Don't buy cheep after market sensors and modules, etc. It's not worth it. They either don't last or just don't work.

  • @clborg88 The Cardone distributor comes with all new electrical, ready to drop in. I've put 17,000 miles on mine with no trouble. I've had to replace all my stock electrical sensors, right after I purchased it.

  • Don't Know about the S-10, but the Fiero's ECM is not programed for emissions, so the computer doesn't know if it's there or not, so you can just remove it without affecting anything...except making it run better, cleaner, and stronger.

  • Don't Know about the S-10, but the Fiero's ECM is not programed for emissions, so the computer doesn't know if it's there or not, so you can just remove it without affecting anything...except making it run better, cleaner, and stronger.

  • hey i am building one of these 2.8 motors for my S10 and it has the tbi but i like to know how you do the EGR delete on the motor. do you just take it off? or is there more to it? thanks

  • @89S10turbo

hypo's reply was mistaken, the ECM (on 2.8 Fieros, but not 4cyls) does control the EGR. If you only block it off the ECM still thinks it's there and will change the mixture and timing when it thinks it's active.

You can disable it in the ECM by making a new chip, if you have the means of doing that. I used TunerPro for that, but I don't know if this applies to the S10.

There's a setting in the code for minimum temperature to activate EGR, you just set that to "car is on fire".

  • @yorgle11 With all due respect, why doesn't it affect the operation in any way, and why do I continue to get excellent gas mileage, and why doesn't the computer give a problem code. We've done the same thing with my '86 and my son's '85 GT, with the same results...nothing but improvement! My mechanic used to build engines for NASCAR, a computer specialist (builds them), and he was the one who told me, and I think the results proves him right.

  • @Hypo The EGR control solenoid has a 4-pin connector from the ECM which provides control over vacuum supply to the valve.

The effect on the ECM isn't anything dramatic. But it does have 2 tables that take EGR into account. One adds spark advance as a function of EGR%. The other is "base pulse constant vs EGR" which reduces fuel as EGR% increases. So when it thinks EGR is active, it goes slightly lean and increases spark advance unless chip is modded. Note EGR only activates at light throttle.

  • @yorgle11 You obviously know mega more about the system than I! I wish I had your e-mail or something,so I could pick your brain and learn more about my car. My mechanic has the credentials, as I mentioned, but he's also a druggie, and is in jail, for I don't know how long, so makes it impossible to ask him questions, or I'd show him what you said, and maybe lean something, as I'm sure you know what your talking about. So, having removed my EGR and CAT, what can I do for improved results?

  • @Hypo327 Blocking EGR w/ stock ECM can increase tendency to knock at part-throttle cruising, but shouldn't affect WOT. So it's not a huge issue if base timing isn't too aggressive.

If you're interested in more in-depth discussion on these cars, I'd check out Pennock Fiero Forum.

I'll warn you though, it's pretty engine-swap centric. But there are some 2.8 guys there.

Also the 60degreev6 forum knows these engines well.

Some popular mods are porting the exhaust manifolds and Y-pipe.

  • Nice Fiero! I have a 86' coupe now but I want a 88' GT so bad. Can get parts anymore hardly.

  • Nice video

  • That is one BEAUTIFUL piece of American beauty!! I'm in Orlando, Florida & looking to buy a 1988 5 sp. Fiero GT for investment purposes. I believe this car will be a hit in 10 more years, kept in original condition.

  • Nice Fiero ! I've been thinking about the 180 degree thermostat. Did you notice a big performance difference with it? Any downside to the 180? Thanks!!!

  • @mjlogan2001 180 degree stat works good in really hot weather, but I run my stock 195 stat. most of the year around, because I get better gas mileage. Computer is set for mixing fuel better at that temp.

  • Just bought a white 88 GT 5 speed project. Can't wait to pick it up!

  • I have one just like it with 38K original miles. Bought it from some guy in Ohio back 6 or 7 years now. Looks like new, and I love it, too bad GM dumped Pontiac, I was hoping to buy a new Solstice turbo someday, I guess it will be a used one like my Fiero GT.

  • Beautiful. Love the sound.

  • not bad, thinking of completely swapping out to a 3800 near the end of the coming up summer. :)

  • the 88's actually cost more to uprgade if you look for any kind of upgrades like for instance on the fiero store the same thing for an 88 rather than an 84-87 is more expensive. Though your right its worth it with the factory upgraded suspension. I too have an 86 GT with the 5 speed getrag and love it. That then made my dad and brother want one. So they both got one haha.

  • @FIEROgtFREAK My son's '85 GT inspired me to get mine a year later. They are contagious! Seen that happen many many times.

  • @FIEROgtFREAK No and yes to your costs. One does not have to up-grade the '88 suspension, except for installing polly bushings throughout (get the graphite black polly bushings...they don't squeak.) That saves you about $1000 right there, even though the replacement parts are more expensive. You're always ahead getting an '88 with the Lotus type suspension.

  • I want one so bad, there's actually one for sale near where I live but is any one older than an 88 a 4 speed manual?

  • @doomsk8er

They didn't make them after '88. Best to find a late run '86 with Getrag 5-speed (like mine) or a '87 with Getrag 5-speed, or a '88 with Getrag 5-speed. Best to find a '88 because you don't have to up-grade the suspension, except for lowering ball joints. There are some good deals out there of cars that have already been after-market up-graded. Don't settle for less than a good running, low mileage car with good up-grades...unless you've got lots of money to dump into it.

  • this is what you call an american version of a nissan 240 sx :P

  • @crazy4baseball47 Except it's more similar to the MR2 than the 240sx. In fact it has almost nothing in common with a 240sx.

  • @TKDWolf haha i guess ur right :P

  • Hey Hypo! I have an '87 GT blue and silver two-tone that has the original engine. The engine block is at the machine shop right now and I am thinking about investing some very serious money into it. And by "serious" I mean porting the heads and all 3 pieces of the intake... as well as a larger cam/lifter kit and roller rockers. Is it worth it? I just want to make this car everything it was meant to be and keep its originality.

  • @kevindozier I love my little toy, Kevin, but don't put a lot money in that little 2.8. Get a low mileage 3.4. DOHC , or better yet, a 3800 SC II ('97 or later with the computer). Stay away from the early model Getrag (like mine), because you can't replace the input shaft bearing that tends to go out. Find yourself a '92 or later Getrag H282, and go through it with a bearing/sincro kit. With a good stage 3 clutch, and you got yourself a great machine that will go like crazy!

  • im not sure cause i have the muncie in mine, and i havent had any problems doin this with it

  • Up-date: I got my rocker panels on...finally. Eibach lowering springs, KYB shocks and struts, Poly bushings, Fiero Store 1" front swaybar, custom rear 7/8" sway bar, using Fiero Store end links with shorter bolts. Corrected bump-steer, by moving tie rod anchoring to align with control arm bushings (shortening tie rods about 3-inches). New slotted ball joints. Mr. Mile's seat covers. Royal purple oil with K&N filter in engine and transmission. Planing a 3.4 DOHV engine swap, future.

  • thinking about buying an 86 fiero gt. was that a bad year?

  • @jm2347 Depends on what you mean it was bad for. Most of the problems with Fieros, I believe, was with the owners, either not taking good care of them or expecting more out of what they had. I like them all. The suspension from 84-87 was poor, but fixable, by installing slotted front ball joints, correcting rear bump-steer, and installing Prothane (black) polyurethane bushings through-out. Use the black ones if you want to ride quietly. The red ones squeek badly. 88 suspensions are the best

  • @jm2347: There were no "bad years" in my opinion. It's just that the pre-77's cost more to up-grade. The late run '86's, like mine, with Getrag/Muncie 5-speed, has many (if not all) '87 up-grades. The '88's have the total up-grade suspension, which will save you a minimum of $1000. Pre-'88's will have to have slotted front ball joints, polyurethane bushings, and bump-steer fix, to make it handle good and safe.

  • @jm2347 I have an 85 GT, stay away from 84 they like to catch on fire, 88 is best because of updated supension

  • @jm2347 I have an 85 GT, stay away from 84 they like to catch on fire, 88 is best because of updated suspension

  • @iant720 Only a few 84s caught fire before Pontiac fixed the problems. Most 84s have the recall fixes. I had an 84 and knew what to look for and it had the fix so I wasn't worried. Ran beautifully til I sold it.

  • @jm2347 The 85-87 2.8s had an inherent design flaw that starved the head of oil. They fixed this and gave the Fiero better suspension in 88. I had an 88 Formula, and had a drop in K&N, and a Pro Street ignition kit by Jacob's Electronics and 8.5mm ignition cables. The kit had a high output coil with it. The K&N helped, but the ignition kit felt like it made no difference. I match ported the intake manifold and it helped a lot. Stock, they are unevenly matched to the intake runners.

  • I had a 1988 Formula, and the best mod I done to it was to take the air plenum off and match port it. Do not get a Jacob's Electronics Pro Street ignition kit, I tried one and on the 2.8 it did not make a difference at all. The factory ignition on the 2.8 seems optimal. The Fiero Store has the big bore tb, but that will shift your powerband upwards. For me, the 2.8 lagged on the freeway but was nice on the low end.

  • @2muchreality4u You're right, porting is a big plus, on both ends. My car preforms great all of the time. When I port it, things will definitely improve.

  • you mention better mileage, what are you getting? I am looking for a DD/commuter and always liked the fiero.

  • @BikerTrashWolf : 23-25 around town, and 32-35 on the highway, but that's after putting Royal Purple oil and filter (or K&N filter). That really made a big difference!

  • @Hypo327 i get actually around 19 mpg around town and around 25 mpg on the high way.

  • Bypass EGR with no mention of head mods?! Should noticably lower compression ratio if GM engineers did reasonable work... And 160 degree thermostat should be too cold even for all stock to semi stock Fieros. 160 good for pure track use. That's all basic auto theory I've picked up from dozens of car & truck forums. Those 2 things are repeated many times over among several sites. Otherwise COOL. :)

  • @MattsRanger You are definitely correct about the 160 deg. stat. When I got my car, I believed the write up from the Fiero Store...mistake. The computer did not like that at all. It ran rough until I put in a 180, and that has been great, allowing the engine to run as cool as possible for good operation.

  • Is this the stock exhaust? If so, that's pretty intense.

  • @Raytheon45 No EGR or Cat.

  • Where'd your side skirts go? Looks naked without them

  • @California9 Yeah, finally got my rocker panels fixed and back on. I hated that too.

  • Comment removed

  • exhaust makes a huge difference on the 2.8 engines the factory is so restrictive

  • OMG i just about pissed myself hahaha grandpa gots skills!!!!!! hahahahaha nice car and you have an awesome dad or grandpa or whatever he is to you!!!!!!

  • @krazycardude LOL...you are right, father to the filmer, and three more boys and 4 beautiful girls. I just got back from the N.W. Fiero Fest. Guess what? Some of the best Fieros belonged to older duds than me. If you plan on getting old spiritually to match your body, I'll still be 16 inside to when you are 40. Stay young my friend, life does not end at 40. My Fiero reflects that!

  • wow. old guy still has it!

nice car btw. one of general motor's most attractive cars. they should bring this one back.

  • @standardwolfsburg Thanks. I'm going to do it again soon. It's in the shop getting a new Spec stage 3 clutch and bump-steer fix. I've put about $2000 in up-grades since the video, and much more to come. Thought I wanted to drop a SC3800 II in it, but think I'll do a 3.4 DOHC swap. Much higher rpm's, over 100lbs lighter, and @ 240 hp, she'll get me down the track faster. Just hard to change spark plugs.

  • @standardwolfsburg they would find a way to mess it up.

  • hehe. Littlewing.

  • I am SO!! getting ones of those. an 88 BLACK. loaded. muhaha!

  • @BMan100 Lotsa good ones on Craig's List. Look for a low mileage '87 or '88 in good shape. Mine is a late model '86 (with all the 87 improvements).

  • i am surprised it spun the tires and chirped second too, must have been a belt slipping

  • Comment removed

  • not a belt. that's 2nd gear scratch.

  • @dwiggs77 LOL...Wait 'til I get my stage three clutch installed. Of course my new belt tightener will stop any doubts.

  • their was an 89 prototype though. but yet that means you still didnt have a 89 gt. nice try though. FAIL!

  • @jerkme129 Don't know what your talking about my friend, but it's a late run '86, with all the 87 options and revised body parts, and 7" wide wheels all around. Most '86's had 6" wheels, and the '88's had 6" in the front. My '86 even had an 87 owner's manual with it.

  • Nice

  • @satchboogyfan Thanks! I like it.

  • 1988 was the last year

No such thing as 89 gt

  • @satchboogyfan Right there satch.

  • this is a cool video. i had an 89 gt. it cought fire at 85 mph. i miss that car. didn't take very good care of it.

  • @dongusongtonginong lol no such thing as an 89 GT smart guy (at least for sale). I topped out my 86 GT at 120+ all the time. Ran like a champ

  • @California9 I got mine up to 120 when I first got it, and came right back down, cause way to unstable! I took it up to 120 on my last trip, and she was solid as a rock, and smooth as silk, because of the total suspension up-grades.

  • Comment removed

  • @dongusongtonginong Do you check the oil in your cars now? That was the main cause of the fires in the Iron Duke 4-cyl.

  • @Hypo327 it was a 2.8.

  • Nice. I really think you dad is cool. Still a power lover.

  • I have an 86 GT same color and body style. I wish I had the 5 speed though. I have the loosey fuel economy 3 speed.

  • Dad is giving me his. Its literally the same car. (almost)

A stock red 86 gt, looks the exact same.

he put in a different fuel distribution chip i believe, so your tweaks and that tweak might even out a little. too bad my insurance for basic is $270

  • Cool, always liked fieros. Especially the 87 and 88 GT models.

  • again a person with nothing to do with their free time but create a profile for bashing. amazing how many losers there are with nothing better to do than make fun of someone for enjoying what they have

  • how high did you run it up before you dumpedd it? and have you ever broke anything on it doin that?

  • @karr121212 4000 rpms. Do not recommend doing that with the early design Gettrag, 'cause the input shaft bearing has a tendency to go out. There is no pilot bearing because the Getrag has a front and rear shaft bearing.

  • Nice Job! I'm planning to do some similar upgrades to my 87 GT also. Any specific improvements you've noticed from changing the coil to the high voltage one? Easier to start?

    Cheers,

    James.

  • I think its better starting, running, ecceleration, etc.

  • @Hypo327 It's true you do get better acceleration ,but it wont show up on a dyno really.

  • I think before I do anything else, I'm going to do a complete Fiero Store suspension rebuild, you know...Front and rear performance sway bars, and poly bushings throughout, and KYB shocks all around, followed by a hunter all wheel alignment. I hate driving down the highway having my car wanting to track on the truck tire grooves. Also, notice the way it wants to steer to the right when going off the line! I want to eliminate all of that stuff and put the car back in control of the driver!

  • you will be able to outhandle a new lambo then!! LOL NOT!

  • Sure...you give me one and I'll handle it, I'd rather you make it a Ford GT though, so I can at least see out of it...lol

  • That's okay. What's your favorite of your Fieros? Better yet post a video it "off the line" from the same view as my stock Fiero, so we can see the difference. The best 3800 1/4 mile video I've seen is the 127 mph one. That's almost as fast as my old '55 Chevy hypo 327!

  • Good points Dave...you might be right..? I have lots of fun with mine...that's what counts. I'm sure you do to. I will check out your video. Didn't know you had one.

  • Yeah...maybe, but mine looks lots better doing it...even without rocker panels;-)

  • How did you do an EGR delete without pissing off the ECU?

Have you gotten the flywheel on yet? I have had one since I bought the car, haven't put it on. Whats it like?

    I must know more!

  • I've changed my mind on the flywheel since I'm going for a 3800SC3 when my engine gets tired, and I can't use the flywheel with the 3.8 swap, unless some one knows how I to adapt it.??

About the EGR...the computer isn't programed for one, so it doesn't know the difference. Some guys just cut a block-off gasket from an aluminum can, and know one knows the difference.

  • slow

  • Even if it was slow, it looked great doing it.

  • Thanks "J" I agree...

  • Compared to what? Actually, it's pretty fast compared to a factory stock 2.8 5-spd. It isn't as exiting as my old '55 Chevy running a Chevy Chaparel hypo 327, but it still fun and I can afford the gas...lol

  • you created a profile specifically for bashing Fieros? you must have no life im sorry.

  • i have a somewhatsstock fiero and its not as quick as i want it to be, whats the cheapest way to change that?

  • youre missin ground affects. lol

  • Yes, I'm refinishing the rocker panels and haven't got them back on yet. It does look bad I know.

  • Nice Car , love Fieros !

  • When I get my new clutch and flywheel in, I'll do this again, lifting the lid to show the engine in the walk around, and I'll pop the clutch at 5k...hope I don't miss a chift. I had to install a new 02 and MAP sensor since this vidio, and she's still running good.

  • Decided not to install an alum. flywheel cause it won't work with a 3800 later. Proceeding with the suspension up-grade.

  • @Hypo327 i use to want a red fiero gt, when i was going to college in 1988, they still look very cool now in my opinion, also i like the Delorean. people shouldnt talk bad about these old cars, new cars which have 20 yrs of technology advances will ofcourse out perform them. but they are a dime a dozen. these old cars have there own cool style.
