It's time to start thinking about reusing your plastic bags. They can be used way more than once. The shops provide plastic bags for your convenience and what would you do without them. What you leave the shops with is your responsibility. It takes more energy to produce a "green bag" and you get less use out of them. Don't pay to buy bags which is another supermarket scam to make more money, get a box from the supermarket waste or bring your own bag.

I don't know why they're even manufactured when earth friendly alternatives like cotton string bags are available. I'm so tired of supermarket staff packing one or two items per plastic bag and the drive through staff at fast food restaurants giving me my small takeaway feed in a plastic bag too. Re-use plastic bags but make a point of advertising other super markets by taking different supermarket bags into different supermarkets. This is a good way that all supermarkets can help each other. Plus you are helping the environment. Maybe you can write your own messages on the re-usable plastic bags saying things like SAVE THE SNAILS or NO TO SLAVE LABOUR. There is something wrong with using them,then discarding them instead of recycling. Don't be so blind. If you reuse your plastic bags, then when they are unable to hold your groceries; take them to a place to deposit it. The Canadian study in Newfoundland reported that between 1981 and 1984 that 100,000 marine animals die of discarded nets.

In 2002 when Australian government comissioned a report on the effect of plastic bags, they used the same Canadian report but stated that plastic bags did the killing.

As for you, I would stick to plastic bags than using canvas bags. The United States is making this transition that is only producing work for the American people. There is no need to stop using plastic bags. They are an ingenious invention, all they do is they sit there on the floor. This is the only real thing that disturbs some activists, is that they sit on the floor for a very long time before decomposing.

If we use just canvas you will have to carry 10-12 to the store.

I agree that it's completely out of hand. I did groceries yesterday, and ended up with about 20 plastic bags. Our local recycling doesn't take plastic bags, so it goes in the garbage.
