I play way out to the left as well. I find it gives me a psychological advantage against the guys from work to drop the vicious hook while they're chucking the straight ball.
Sure, bowling off the 1 board means you send a few in the channel as carrydown progresses, but watching the ball recover from the 1 board all the way back to the 1-2 pocket to lay down a convincing strike on the southside is well worth it.
The bowling lane is divided into 39 boards. for a right hander, the 1 board is the board furthest to the right.
Channel is another term for the gutter.
In order to protect the lane and to influence the character of play on that lane, the alley puts oil (usually) mostly on the front half of the lane. After throwing the ball down a certain line for a while, the oil gets pushed down the lane and alters the breakpoint (where the ball hooks). That's called carrydown.

What the hell is a half lane bumper? and that isn't a crazy amount of hook. I can make a ball do that too. These lanes look beat up. It is really not that hard to do.
What are you trying to work on? To get more hook, keep your hand on the inside of the ball and underneath. That will give more side rotation and more overall hook. The biggest thing you can do is practice. Experiment with different hand positions and just see what feels comfortable to you. When you find something comfortable, keep throwing that way and move your feet or target to hit the pocket.

What the hell is a half lane bumper? and that isn't a crazy amount of hook. I can make a ball do that too. These lanes look beat up. It is really not that hard to do.

What are you trying to work on? To get more hook, keep your hand on the inside of the ball and underneath. That will give more side rotation and more overall hook. The biggest thing you can do is practice. Experiment with different hand positions and just see what feels comfortable to you. When you find something comfortable, keep throwing that way and move your feet or target to hit the pocket.

I have a storm invasion, hammer widow bite, ebonite total nv, ebonite sr300, and a storm virtual energy. I prefer the storms to the others. I used to be die hard ebonite, but i tried the virtual energy and now i am hooked on storm.

i bowl in 4 leagues a year, and many tournaments. i bowl in a youth league during the winter, and two summer leagues that put out pro patterns. I am also on my high schools varsity team.
