What you fail to mention:

1. The main layer (the original scan) still PROVES he was born in the USA.

(even if everything else was "faked")

2. As a "designer" you should also recognize that things get re-touched for legability. You can see the "ghosted" font of the original (likely unlegable) still matches the shape of the "faked" font. There is no sign that the letters were changed, simply enhanced.

You're very wrong. There is no 'main layer', it's gone. It's been replaced with digitally created fonts that COULD be manipulated. That defeats very meaning of a photocopy altogether.

A scan is a flat-file, one-layer image that requires no OCR software, Adobe Illustrator or other application to generate. It is simply a photo-copy of the piece of paper that was layed onto the scanner. The fact that the document presented to the world has ANY sort of layering or 'imagery', (aside from the singular and foundate layer generated in a scan), is proof that some level of deception is afoot.

Opened on Photoshop, why is there a green, water-mark mask portion to this document at all?

Hey here's your common sense dose of the day. You can SCAN the original and edit it in the Adobe products and yes, it will have everything he talks about in here - and it will recognize the text and you can even correct it to recognize other sections. I know. I do this all the time with school projects and important paperwork. This isn't a scandal, it should be common knowledge for every single person who has ever worked with Adobe. This guy's just preying on most people's ignorance.

Regardless of the birth certificate issue, even Obama freely admits that his father was not an American citizen when he was born. Therefore, he is not eligible to president. End of story.

"When a PDF is created in certain programs, OCR - optical character recognition - is run. In other words, the system looks at the image and tries to recognize words. If it finds some, it changes the images into searchable text.

Any PDF that has had OCR performed will, when opened in Illustrator, show layers that display the text that has been recognized."

You need some catch up to do. We know about OCR and I know how it works.

To make it short - this is manual work, OCR cannot recognize and perfectly replace 99% of handwritten abracadabra with digitally created fonts, ever.

Even when I use $500 Abbyy OCR software, it can't do what Obama got, no way no how. And Abbyy is the best technology there is! So, put it to rest.

Besides, replacing 99% of scanned text with new digital fonts defeat meaning of photocopy altogether.

It's actually not a surprise that you're so ignorant :) of the software. The reason why this is OCR is for the document to be searchable. Yes it could have simply been an image but they did it this way for SEO. OCR does recognize fonts and tries to recreate them. Lol and really, just a $500 software? Go back to school.

I have been a designer for 10+ years in photoshop and illustrator. This kid is SPOT ON with his assessment of this document. It's obvious, if you even UNDERSTAND layers you can see he found an exploit in the software to figure out how to bring the layers back from the PDF. This guy was an artist, not an IT tech. Scanners detect what it believes are groupings and puts them into separate layers.

The digital senders we worked with at Dell and our account did this, even. I'm in Bartlesville right now, but I can go onto campus in Norman and scan a complicated form to .pdf and send it to you. I guarantee it does the same thing.

@nick10463 Since posting a link in a comment seems to be blocking my post, take this except from Wireupdate. No photoshoping required. No OCR required. What was done was simply optimizing the PDF for distribution and separating the text from the background and surrounding areas helps with file compression and thus produces a smaller sized document for dissemination.

If you look for boggymen, you will find them.

checked it myself on illustrator cs5, it's true. i seriously doubt a scanner broke it into layers.

I am an expert in all Adobe products and believe this document is real. When you set your scanner there are multiple setting based on the scanner you use that scans the document in the format that we see above. I opened the pdf myself in adobe illustrator and when you turn off all the layers except for the last one you can still see what it says and you can tell that the document is legit. I am republican and would have been very happy to see that this was a fake unfortunately it's not.

For more detail: You will notice how most of the typed text is on the same layer (that is because it is recognized) and is jet black, not shades of dark grey and black (which suffers many black scanned images, be they from pen or inkjet). The exception is the word Date in the lower right hand corner. This is because the "AUG" stamp touches it, making it very difficult to recognize as a word. Scanner software isn't perfect.

P.s. I disagree with the posting, but I'm glad he's looking closely.

Welcome to Adobe: this is an unfortunate (but common) result of the text recognition options they failed to disable before scanning the document. It always ends up this way. I would be more suspicious if this affect wasn't there. You don't think the CIA knows about Adobe layers?
