  • mrepirical you are spot on i was a watchmen virgin before i saw the film and i loved it, i do plan to read the comic one day cos i loved it.

  • da whore played nite awl is a bad actress

she should just fucking die like god intended

  • the director's cut will be a little better.

it'll have extended scenes but not the comic within a comic story.

  • I really appreciate ur review, man. U think these things through really thoroughly and ur trying to remain as neutral as possible. Great Review.

PS. R u gonna continue with ur Batmania reviews cuz i loves those and I want to learn ur opinions on the past 2 Batmans, which i personally think are awesome

  • When i saw the movie, i had not yet read the novel, and nonetheless I thought it was easily the best film of the last 12 months. I think it's hard for people who had already read the novel to realise just how good the movie is. When you've read the novel, all you can think when you watch the film is "Oh, they left that out, oh, they changed that". But when you watch it as a watchmen virgin, all you see is a damn awesome film.

  • Well i think that the movie is awesome too :) I actually think that it was far better than The Dark Knight.

  • Absolutely. Aside from having a deeper and more interesting story with more complex characters, Watchmen's R rating gave it the freedom to explore its themes fully. The Dark Knight was not able to be truly dark, because they needed the PG rating.

  • read first, watched later, liked what I had the attention span for entertainment to sit through in both

  • 100% percent agreed

  • i remember when i saw the railer for this at the dark knight, and afterwarsa i turned to my dad like "What the fuck was that?"

and my dad was like "i don't know but it looks fuckin awesome!"

  • Very nice review. I can't really add anything because you managed to hit all the pros and cons that I found with the movie perfectly. I will say though, as a person who had no idea what Watchmen was until this movie was released, I was glad that the movie catered to the fans of the novel but I couldn't help feeling left out as well. At the end, I just wanted to read the novel so I could understand the characters' psyches better and connect with them more. It was still a great film though.

  • i like the review. i just watched watchmen. finally. (i live overseas) i read the novel and enjoyed the adaptation myself. i like the movie version ending than the book.

for the music thing you mentioned. i would have to agree. my friend lend over to me (who hasnt read the novel) and asked if he missed something that made the 99 ballons song meaningful to the movie and i couldn't answer. i liked the songs throughout and it ended up distacting me while i watch what is going on screen.

  • GOOD WORK on the Movie Review, hit on some really great insight and details. You should definitly consider doing more direct movie reviews.

  • watchmen sucks

  • no, you do.

  • watchmen fail

  • you fail

  • milo110: you fail. not the moviepreviewcritic.

  • the thing i have to say is there pushing the soft core porn so much i say fuck it make it hardcore silk specter is already wearing a domanatrix out fit it would of been cooler to show her have nite owl 2 tied up and beating him with a whip lol would been a funney moment

  • This is a really great review. If like me you were a bit ticked off that they cut elements out from the book that were needed, there is still the 30mins longer director's cut to come out yet on DVD. And after that there is the 35mins even longer again Ultimate edition DVD that will bring back Black Frieghter and Bernard and Bernie. The only thing I did not agree on was your opinion of the music score. I love it. I though the opening cords to Jimi Hendrix signified the 3rd Acts opening perfectly.

  • I liked the death scene with Nite Owl II, it did make the friendship seem stronger.

I can't wait for your movie night on this, I'm getting the director's cut.

GREAT movie review. I'm glad you explained more on the charaters, they're what made the story.

  • like the review but don´t forget tow alsow do preview reviewes

  • you should do more movie reviews.

  • I've not seen the film yet, because I want to finish reading the novel, I had stopped at Chapter Five a few months ago, I can just scroll through pages to get my mind back on track and then read from the page I stopped at, I'm gonna read the pin-up notes after reading the rest of the comic. But anyways, I love your review here, it's great as it is, but I would advise that you add the "Spoiler Warning" alert for each video, but over all your discussion on movies is very positive, keep it up! :-D

  • Well said. I think you give Watchmen too much credit, but your analysis is fair, and I can respect your point of view. You did correctly identify the worst part of the movie, its soundtrack. I could not believe how incredibly distracted I was whenever some random part of the director's mix-tape started up. The TNA scene was awkwardly long and Dr. Manhattan's clothing disconnect. I didn't find it all that distracted, having a BFA in Studio Art, but it was definitely bizarre.

  • Oh, one more thing that I didn't mention. The song ""99 red balloons" is actually a german, cold war era protest song titled "Neunundneunzig Luftballons" which translates to "99 balloons." the song spoke out against agitating Russia when they were inches from the lauch of hundreds of nuclear weapons. SO thematically the song fit in the movie, it was just poorly applied.

  • cant wait for ur dark knight movie night

  • I think Zack Snyder did a great job creating a representation that could appeal to both fans and new comers. That said I have to give you kudos for the crack about Big Figure's casting, you stole the thought right outta my head, man. All in all, phenominal job on the review.

  • Well, I must say that your 1st review went down pretty well. I agree with most of your points. The 1 that I see fault in is the "preaching to the choir" comment. I hadn't heard of Watchmen until I saw the trailer, and had since then been collecting bits of info here and there however I was still pretty in the dark when I saw it. I was blown away. Yes it was probably a watered down version, but it still hits even u with who with so much info to take in. I was inspired to find & read the GN.

  • Well, u kinda blew my mind, so tnx. My problem was with your line "insted of trying to convert new comers". It feels to me like you are thinking the way you say the studio was thinking "new commers" will see this movie, that you underestimate them aswell.

I guess some people would not understand what the movie is trying to throw at you in term of charchter psychology, but I as one who didnt know of the origin, kinda got the idea...not to say I am smart, but to say the message comes thru...

  • good work, you really sould do more Movie Review, but whit movies that were wordy of a good Movie Review. I just watch watchmen, and really enjoy the movie and I really spet to see the movie nigth fo watchmen.

Keep the good work and "long live good movies"

  • And The Ten Commandments was over 4 hours long!

  • really

  • i thought it was a good movie based off the comic. tho i saw on imax first before seeing it on reg theatre. overall cant wait to own it on dvd

  • I think Nite Owl's big 'NOOOOOO' scream was a good example of how this actually can work, how a character can scream 'NOOOOOO' with his fists at the heavens. Previous tries, like Darth Vader, always made this look incredibily lame. But now it worked, I felt with Nite Owl. The shot was well edited and acted out.

  • you should do this moe often

  • Hey MPC what gives? No Box-Office breakdown this week? Well just so everyone knows Watchmen dropped 67.7%... That is a huge drop! Here are the numbers: 1. Witch Mountain - $24,402,214 2. Watchmen - $17,817,301 3. Last House - $14,118,685 4. Taken - $6,568,651 5. Madea - $5,108,532 6. Slumdog - $5,002,777 7. Paul Blart -$3,119,151 8. Not That Into You - $2,939,484 9 Coraline - $2,718,231 10 Miss March - $2,409,156 I nominate "Miss March" as our BoxOfficeSuccess of the Week.
  • Watchmen's total in the U.S. is currently $89,988,766 (not including this Thursday).

I suspect Watchmen to drop another 50% this weekend which means that it should be just below $100 million after the weekend. My guess is $98 million.

From there I don't see Watchmen making enough money to make its reported $150 million budget. I think Watchmen will end up with $131 million in the U.S. give or take.

  • Dvd''s and merchendise brings in a whole lot of money as well

  • Yeah I know. Plus there's the overseas gross as well, but trust me Studios do not like it when their movie does not make back its production budget with its US gross alone. In fact they would prefer if a movie's US gross far exceeds the budget. A movie is like an investment for them and they almost always expect a big return for big budget movies like this.

Also don't forget that there are many outlying costs that are not included in the production budget too.

  • Great to see you made your first "real" movie review...Hope you make more ^-^

  • Thanks for doing your first "real" review MPC! Thought it was great. If there was any movie to start doing it on, Watchmen was certainly the perfect choice.

  • Great review, only thing that was missing was the visual aspect. I think bringing pictures would greatly high-light your ideas and points

  • I'd like a few more pictures, but other than that, fantastic!

  • Oh yeah, I forgot, how often did they mention the Knot heads? Or the Nite Owl 1? I guess he got lost by cut links. They cut the alien, so they cut the autor/ Indian artist, so they cut the Black Freighter, so they cut the kid, so they cut the news stand, so they canceled the knot heads, so they canceled the death of Nite Owl 1.

  • i know that nite owl 1 and the pirate story are going to be in the director's cut.

  • My friend's dad came to the movie with us. When the SpectreII/Nite Owl thing happened, I just kept thinking how embarassed my firend felt.

I wondered how Adrian went into the story, but even more, Bubastis. She was in there for like one scene, and that's when she died.

I felt a TV mini-series would have been better.

  • Great Review, TMPC!

One bit that bugged me was when Veidt caught the bullet, without the line about him bragging about being able to do it (lin the book), I think it makes him look super human.

I thought Manhatten's voice wasn't godlike enough either.

You hit the nail on the head with the soundtrack.

But on the whole, it's great, my favorite parts were Manhattan on Mars(even though there's no explanation of where the glass comes from) and Rorshach's capturing and time in prison. Great stuff!

  • great reveiw!

  • i saw it with my brother - like you said, excellent bromance movie.. i really liked it, and i did kind of gather that ozzy had the good intention of forcing humanity to be at peace - but admittedly, i thought back to the flashback scene where the comedian burns the america map, and ozzy is being hopeful.. but not many moviegoers would make that connection, so the meaning gets lost for them..

still, i got the point of........

  • .... got the point of normal people doing the wrong thing for the right reason, it was very clear and obvious, so the spirit was captured..

i must also confess, i went into this with a blank slate - i had not read the comics, and my only exposure to the story was your preview review, which left most of those details comfortably vague.. so all in all, if i got the point, then the movie was a definite success..

    i highly recommend it

  • I completely agree. Also TMPC, you decided that Transformers (07) was worth FP even after seeing it several times but I actually felt unsatisfied. I left Watchmen after a late night showing thinking it was worth my money, even if it isn't a cutting edge standout movie. So you really were right on the mark the first time.

  • agreed. its definately an rp movie.

  • you should be a partner. your awesome. i hope you do more reviews in the future

  • more reviews b i agree with every point and i implore everyone to read the comic!!!!!

  • "The first pancake"

That's great MPC! I know exactly what you mean cuz I my kids love it when dad makes them pancakes but damn is that first pancake a bitch or what? And yet it gets eaten right up because... well it's the first one.

  • *cheeto guy*blah blah blah... lol jk man good job i illegally download my movies so its free and i think this is worth the wait to download it takes a while but what have i got to lose and btw keep doiong movie reviews

  • i can never get over the time thing. I wish they would take the damn chance and make movies like this more then one part like the original Dune was supposed to be.

  • i only read the comic so i didn't really know what to expect..

    glad it was faithful

  • Great review TMPC i've allways wanted to know what you thought about the movie after you review\preview to see if it is good or bad as you said in your review\previews

    LONG LIVE GOOD MOVIES

  • Great review!

I personally feel that they could have edited down a lot of scenes to make room for more character development, and all that slow-mo is getting old. And Ozymandias was ridiculously unlikeable and menacing in the movie. He was much friendlier in the book, and I feel this is a combination of the actor and the writing. Silk Spectre also wasn't any good.

Just my detractors from what I felt was otherwise a pretty good representation of the book.

  • Dam! this movie sounds deep! I got to start taking notes!

  • lol who takes notes your gonna watch it your not gonna make notes, study them, then yell out every scene durring a movie in a theatre

  • i didn't like Nite Owl being there for Rorschachs death because it took away from the inevitability of that moment. Rorschach had to die and Nite Owl being left in the dark about it juxtaposed the public's ignorance about what really caused the millions of deaths. Also i thought they should have kept the finale discussion between Ozzy and Dr. M in the book the way it was. It would have been easy to do and helps Ozzy seem more human because of the perceived doubt it conveys.

  • You got one thing wrong:

    There will be 3 DVDs.

    1- theatrical

    2- director's cut

    3- director's cut + Black Freighter

So the 40 min. added is not only 20 of characters.

    SPOILERS-

Added back are the vendor (In the making of book, we see more of them) as well as Hollis's death and it's repercussions. Probably more.

  • this was a great movie. i think it was better than the dark knight.

  • Nah

  • ending was toooooo long and some unwanted stuff. the 10 mins sex scene, 20 min ending.... too long. doesn't relate to the story. if they cut those parts and put more parts from the comic to the movie in the first 2 hours and extending it to 2hours and 20 mins, it will be an exellent film

  • This was a great film. One thing you miss out that was cut which I was upset to lose - the death of the original Nite Owl. This character really didn't do much beyond his first appearance, and whilst I admit that his role isn't a big one in the comic, both his novel and the impact his death has on Nite Owl 2 is very significant and I missed it in the film. Other than that, I was pleased as punch with the movie and I agree with virtually everything you said.

  • No offense(please don't rate my comment bad) but I was a bit dissapointed with this reviews. I'm sure you'll do better in the TDK! Also, please keep some comical content like in parts

    1-4!

  • I have to be honest. I didn't think the sex scene in 300 was over the top. Not only does it show how much Leonidas loves his wife, it also shows the queen's love for her husband. Spartans do nothing have assed, its a safe bet sex is no different. I just don't see the need to avert the auidence's eyes from the sex. Its an a movie meant for adults.

  • Most Americans are Stupid and can't sit threw a

    3 Hour Movie not I

  • You got part 3 and part 2 mixed up.

  • Night Owl saying "NOOOOOO"

was Great I would not even compare it to

Darth Vader I thought it was Perfect I felt like shit after it happened and Night Said exactly what I and everyone in the theater was thinking much better Death scene than the Book and then he runs in and Beats the shit out of Ozzymandias

I think it was a Big Improvement

  • I enjoyed listening to you movie review. I loved the movie and have read the comic. I will say that I just do other stuff while this is playing in the background, so it's a great way to pass the time while I type and read.

  • Movie Night: Another reason I can't wait for the Directors cut!

  • I bet the director's cut version would have made this the best action movie of the year.

Dr. Manhattan is easily the most developed character here because he is simply the most interesting, visually and emotionally (because he apparently acts virtually without emotions).

Adrien is a character that you have to look at twice before you can appreciate the depth he drives into the story. Easily the least developed in the story and because of that, the story suffered.

    Murder with no motive almost.

  • i think the nistalgia has got you a little but i do agree with most of this

  • I really enjoyed the movie review. I for one loved Watchmen, granted it didnt live up to the GN, I thought overall it was great and I hear that originally Synder's first cut of Watchmen ran for 3 hours and 15 min, also they have made a Tales of the Black Freighter thats coming to DVD and Synder has said that he will release a Director Cut that inclused the cut footage and will insert the TotBF footage as well and that DC will run for about 3hr and 45min so maybe the DVD cut will be like the GN

  • Great review, as always. I've so many things to comment on that I'm not even going to look at the comments here. If I do, I'd be forced to respond! lol

  • ive always said myself, if its good, the longer the better

  • Great review...I've seen it twice and my only real complaint is Ozzy's speach it was like 15 pages long in the book and I wish I could have seen more of it in the movie.

  • Great review i saw it last thursday it was opening weekend in PR i really enjoy this movie some fanboys here hate it the ending wish for me was great the way they did i have to say it i laugh is the sex scene with the Hallelujah song and i friend of mine was counting how many times Dr. Manhattan appear with blue penis lol but i really love the movie

  • mpc you rock as always!

  • veidt was kinda mysterious in both the movie and the book. in both he has an uncertaincy about what he just did. in the book he asks jon like an insecure child "i did the right thing, didn't I?"

in the movie he's hurt that Dan didn't appreciate his vision.

  • So what is the next movie night gonna be anyway? I think last time you said The Dark Knight. Are you gonna do a movie night on the Watchmen Director's Cut and/or Tales of the Black Freighter edition when they come out as well?

  • Great videos, AS USUAL, MPC.

  • I think the new ending was much better than the original book's ending.

  • i agree. the giant squid thing made me roll my eyes when i read the book.

  • Good review. Keep up the good work!

  • DUDE! Dark Knight Review?!

  • I think its a little late for a Dark Knight review

  • He didn't finish it. WTF

  • great review man

  • YAY YAY YAY MPC MADE a review of watchmen!!! yay I love u I love u! :)

  • I personally liked the music choices in the movie, for some reason, they just worked for me. (except maybe the random 80's song.) And don't worry, I found myself laughing hysterically throughout the sex scene because it was ridiculous. You are right however that a lot of the spirit and terror of the original book were missing in the movie. .I'm holding out for the Director's Cut. Please talk abut the acting in the Movie Night, it was pretty damn good, especially Rorschach. LLGM!

  • please warn me next time you have spoilers in your review

    very nicely articulated tho

  • There was a spoiler warning in part 1, this is part 3.

  • he did warn people

  • I do enjoy your insights and passion for film! I hope that you'll consider doing more; you have a knack for this!

  • I really enjoyed the review and felt you were really thorough with it. As a fan to the Watchmen graphic novel, I was extremely disappointed with the movie but as a regular movie goer, it was decent. It should have been a miniseries, but they did a decent job.....especially with Rorschach. Believe it or not, I really hated the sex scenes and most of the fight scenes.

  • I really thought the sex scenes were overly long and dragged the plot to a crawl, and some of the violence was out of character for many of the ones doing it (at least compared to the comic). Rorschach and the Comedian were the most brutal in the book, bu the movie has Nite Owl and Silk Spectre outdoing them without any effort (especially in the mugging sequence).

  • The ending was disappointing too. I wasn't as convinced as I was with the book. I think it is more believable for the world to unite against a perceived extraterrestrial threat than a figure who although god-like, is much more human and has been recognizable to humanity for decades in the storyline.

  • The Reason Witch Mountain beat watchmen is 1 factor

    FAMILY

Why take your kids to see a rated R movie

    when theres a Disney movie

    BTW This Movie was Amazing

  • Watchmen has made 18 million on week two. That's a 37 million dollar drop from is opening. Race to witch mountain even beat it. That's painful.

  • You deffinatly give alot to think about! In all honesty, I don't think I thaugh as in deapth as you have with my review of the film. While indeed alot of the sub plots were removed and some of the spirit left out, I think that if they were left in it would have made the film overly long and overly complicated, further alientating a casual aduaince not fammiliar with the source material.

The film overall was a nice middleground. Good review! I'd love to see more in future.

  • i thought it was a great review. i look foward to seeing any more produced in the near future. and it would be interesting to see if your reviews matched anything you would say in the preview reviews. it could be a movie review and a break down review of your own movie preview reviews. damn i think i've said the word "review" one too many times.

  • good review.. i agree with your assessment. But the part in the comic where rorschach handcuffs the guy, leaves a saw for him to cut his hands off and sets the house on fire is more chilling as it points to an almost cold blooded killer instinct that has taken over Rorschach. Whereas in the movie its more like as you said violent, over the edge rage. Maybe its just me but the comic book version seems to suit Rorschach character better.

  • I love the movie review :) you are great, i love listening to your views on movies, please keep posting.

    Cheers.

  • 1# The sex scene , I have no complaints and thought it was funny

2# The end was done well and it works better

  • LOL Nite Owl + Slik Spectre = Hard Core porn =P=P=P

  • i didint like the movie that much but how cares i have the book :)

  • great reviw

  • GREAT review!

I'm gonna watch the animated "Watchmen Tales of the Black Freighter" in an hour or so. After that I'll try to play the game.

You get 5/5, for consistency and accuracy.

  • =) All parts at the same time!

  • Thumbs down for what? I was just saying that TMPC uploaded all parts at the same time, unlike his other preview reviews.
