To ChrisxChaos...He was doing a back dive but hipped it in. You can feel that happen when it does. That scared the crap out of you and sometimes you just try to tuck it over. That's when you hit your head/face. I've done it several times.

well. when he left the board in stead of swing the arms all the way around and pausing he left the arms short, barely. but the main thing was his legs bending that brought him back to the board and a face plant. if he kept strait then he would have been a good foot away from the board

Thank you for the explanation. I think bending his legs and turning his head down did it. In fact, the head should be neutral all the time for a back flip, as opposed to a back dive, where you turn down your head and look for the water at the end. This observation has allowed me to improve my back flip.
