It's not good to compress the caliper piston directly with the c clamp, a better method would be to put an old brake pad against the piston and then put the c clamp on that, it helps to more evenly distribute the pressure and prevent any damage to the piston.
Hi, could you help me out? my car's front right caliper makes a sound like something is loose. Ive checked it and it looks like the piston retracts too much after the brakes are applied thus leaving the brake pads loose. It doesn't do the same on the other side. Why is this happening?
@deadbeat86 Ok, your caliper doesn't always have to have pressure on your pads while driving. If I were you I would take off the brake pads and polish the sleeves in the caliper that come in contact with the pads. Its probably your pads just vibrating when your putting on your brakes. You may always want to ad some disc brake lube also.
Completed this task on a 99 century in 2 1/2 hours working alone. I got very good quality pads with the hardware included. I recommend getting a 8-10" piece of iron pipe that will fit over your socket handle if you don't have a breaker bar. This made the loosening of some really tight caliper bolts VERY easy to remove. Also, I used a 4" C-Clamp to compress the caliper. Thanks again for the video.
much better if you put clinch mountain back step or foggy mountain break-down as the background music. and yea a camera man would have been better but thank you.
bad way to use the c clamp on the caliper piston... be better to use the old brake pad over it... and center the c clamp so the piston/ cylinder goes back into the caliper EVENLY
I want to change the pads and rotors on my car. But I am also leaking break fluid and I gotta put more fluid in there about every two days!!!. What should I do if I want to do it myself??? Please Help!
I'm in a little bind right now. Got the brakes replaced but for the life of me i cannot get the caliper back into the mount of my neighbrs 1997 dodge grand caravan..man everything went so perfect until it was time to put it back in. =(
@CMLovejoy I compressed the caliper it's just I honestly forgot how the caliper sat in the mount. Needless to say I am a bit embarassed. Even if I manage to line up one of the screws the other doesn't line up. I'm gonna go back out and see if I can yank the other wheel off and compare them.
The Oil stuff is just lube so your breaks wont squeek. I just watched this video and went and did my breaks for the first time! Just make sure after you put your tire on pump your breaks until hard mabey 4 times before you start car. Thanks so much for this video
your hands secrete oils of there own...im not saying your brakss will give out and you'll die if you touch it but its safer and CORRECT not to touch them directly...
The caliper will only get mounted 1 way, it won't fit any other way. That cylinder was the piston inside your caliper.
I've seen pads worn all the way down to the backing plate. You can clearly see that they did need to be replaced from the thickness.
The oil was brake grease that sometimes comes with the pads. The spray was "brake clean" that comes in a can like that is safe to spray on brake parts.
I meant rotor.
Thanks for the comment, and if you have any other questions just ask.
not spose to touch the sides of the rotor at 4min. haha it wasnt much but i just sayin for the ppl doing it themselves cause it will leave oils from your hand that can cause brakes to malfunction...great video by the way i gave it 5 stars.
Yay I just changed my brakes 2 days ago thanks to you. Now I don't have to suffer from warped rotors! ;) The only problem was the caliper housing bracket bolts...holy !@#$%^ they were a B***h to get off!!!! But you Rock!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
wow great Video! now your gonna make me change my own brakes! :), but i have a few questions:
before I even start to change them, do i pump the brakes before starting so the pedal is locked?
Also, was that a special grease you put on the backing plate i can buy from an auto store?
And finally, my car is a 2002 prizm (same as corolla) and i wanted to know if its better to get slotted rotors or drilled rotors? Is a semi-metallic pad better than a ceramic?
Great video I have done this a few times before with a friend but it has been a while and I couldnt remember exactly what to do. Wish i could donate some money so you could make some more great videos. You saved me a good bit of cash.
Wow, great vid... I've been thinking of changing my brakes for my 89 caprice myself, but this vid has definitely given more confidence in actually seeing it, and all the little tips vs just manual.

Squeaking is caused from the backing plate of the pad vibrating in the rotor.
the warning clip DOES make a squeaking noise. thats how it tells you that you need new brake pads because when the pads get thin, the clip moves with the pads and its starts gliding against the rotor. if you take a flat screw driver and bend it back you wont hear a squeacking noise. but thats not a good idea to do if you are forgetful and by the way spend $20 and buy a tripod
Well its good that you have a brother to do that. Lots of professional shops scalp people on brake jobs, especially woman! I know this because I've worked for a shop that did it which didn't last long.
I KNOW! I'm telling ya! I'm very lucky. It only cost me $60 to do the brakes. If I would have taken it to a shop! OH MY! I don't even want to know how much they would have jacked me for.
You forgot to mention that you need to remove the lid from the brake fluid container because when you use the C clamp you are pushing the brake fluid to the top.
Fuck off with the gay music i cant hear yoou.

Is it necessary to torque the caliper bolts to specs? or just make them
real tight like the wheel lugs?

@robran53 You want them to be snug, but not so tight that you strip the threads.

First you need to find and fix the leak in your brake system. If its leaking that bad, I don't think you should drive it.
CMLovejoy 2 years ago
Christ that looks complicated as hell...I need to make my brakes stop squealing but damn if you screw this up people can die... =\
zeepman 2 years ago
Just because your brakes squeal doesn't mean they are bad. I've put brand new brakes on cars and they still squealed.
Its when you start hearing a grinding sound is when you need to replace them.
Its not to bad.
CMLovejoy 2 years ago
@CMLovejoy even if they squeal while you're driving and not applying them? (padding them sometimes gets it to stop.)
zeepman 2 years ago
The only want to tell if they are bad are not is to take them off the car and look at them.

Don't you want the caliper mounted facing the rear of the car? What was that cylinder at approx 7:33?
The brake pad that was originally on the car was COMPLETELY worn out, correct? It looked to be approx 1/8", while your new one was 1" thick.
What oil did you put on the backing plate? What did you spray on to clean?
At approx 8:40, did you refer to the rotor as a caliper? If so, you should clarify using the annotation function.
Good video. It needed more views from further away. 5*

So... the caliper will only fit one way into the bracket, correct? But can the bracket be mounted in different positions?
Can you explain the cylinder? (why is there one, what it does, why you had to loosen and tighten it back up)
Your video and response helped a lot. I now know what all the brake components are. I feel like my understanding of brakes went from 15% to 90% :)

Great to hear that!
You just saved yourself some on money, and now you can do them on any car now.
CMLovejoy 3 years ago
Ok, thanks for viewing and I'll try to answer your questions:
Before you get started you don't need to do anything really, just start disassembling.
The grease is sold separately but it usually comes with the pads.
Slotted are probably better, but I'm not sure. Since you have a later model vehicle, I would get lifetime warrantied parts.
Ceramic brakes are the best you can buy, there's also Carbon metallic, but not as good.

what about cars with abs? is there anything additional for that?
bass47k 3 years ago
No, actually that car had ABS.
There is no difference with cars that have ABS when replacing pads.
Good Question.
Abs systems have whats called a brake controler which like a valve that controls braking pressure.

Just another quick question: how do you know if the caliper needs changing?
at1212b 3 years ago
Ok, there are few things that would make you need to replace the caliper.
Reasons for replacing your Brake Caliper.
1. After pumping the brake system fluid doesn't come out of the bleeder screw.
2. The caliper piston is seized and doesn't retract or expand.
3. The caliper sticks, becomes seized while driving.
4. The caliper leaks fluid.
5. The caliper screws are stripped or has a worn seal.
The caliper is very easy to replace and can be done once you replace your pads. Need further help?
