A further tragedy for landlords is the fact that hundreds of pounds have to be made at the till just to service the Pubcos debts before any money can be made to cover the basic costs of running the pub.The two main ‘pubcos’ owe more than £8billion in debt and their accounts show that they need £700million every year, or over £50,000 per pub to service that debt with much of that money going offshore.
The secong biggest contributor to the downfall of the great British pub was Thatcher who decided in her infinite wisdom that the breweries were becoming too monopolistic and she compelled them to get rid of thousands of pubs bewteen them which gave rise to what we now know as Pubcos, who have exploited both pub landlords and customers with their greed with rents and the extortionate cost of supplies to landlords whilst awarding themselves hundreds of millions of pounds in bonuses. Sheer greed.
The smoking ban was introduced to protect pub employees from the effects of *secondary smoking* Well, I compile and present pub quizzes and being a smoker I take ciggie breaks outside and guess what ? Mosty of the barstaff I know are smokers themselves and are outside with me shivering in the cold.
It should be the owners choice as to whether smoking takes place on their private property and no one elses. I carnt believe that this government got away with banning a legal product on private property, a product that they make millions out of every single day. Publicans have got to learn to stand up for themselves - RIP the English Pub
This is about choice! The publicans know their customers and their business if they had more revenue from non-smokers they would have the choice to go no smoking, and vica-versa. this right to choose what is best for the business has been taken away. that is what the fight is about!!!!
The antis will have a fight on their hands. People are waking up to the fact they have been lied to,by the antis. Thank you for the video Inez. Hamish Howitt is also on youtube, he fights too,as are others. If publicans do not stand up and fight, they will have nothing soon to fight for. My local did not want to give it's customers a voice. I do not want to freeze.mandy freedom2choose info
Keep wishing. The "antis" (in other words the ADULTS AND CHILDREN who have been affected by second-hand smoke so know dam well it affects health) outnumber you.
Most asthmatics I know, have more of a problem with air fresheners, perfumes, ect. walk past the fragrance sections in supermarkets, plug ins ect.Makes me reach for my saltpipe. Asthma is on the increase and smoking was on the decrease. How strange!
Superapplefrog. With that comment i presume you have never been or intend to go in a pub in you life? If i am wrong, then you need to realise that the smoking ban effects EVERYONE - smokers and non smokers. If this continues for another few years you will not have the choice of a non smoking pub because there wont be any near you. There will only be flats and office space!! Great video, keep up the fight.
gwelly thanks for your more mature responce than xyto1. I have been in pubs before the ban, but hardly ever. I could virtually not socialise due to the smoke. Now, I can go in pubs and clubs, meaning more revenue for those places - and as you can see by looking at the doorway, there are still plenty of smokers attending
A top vid INEZ, but what a shame you had to make it,it seems that all around the World people have a choice,smoking/non smoking areas, all adults should have a choice, not just non smokers, they dont go in Pubs enough to keep them in business, this Government should hang its head in shame the way it has treated millions of people in this Country, they will not forget when it comes to election time, cheers, TUG.
Yes of course. Because the BBC is the ONLY source of info about smoking-related diseases. And of course I've NEVER gotten ill health after breathing in other people's smoke. It's such a wonderful drug habit that doesn't harm anyone! Wanna play spot the sarcasm? P.S. I think the BBC are shit
P.S. 'The study was funded by the now-defunct Center for Indoor Air Research, which was created by several tobacco companies for the stated purpose of perpetuating the idea that there is a controversy about the dangers of secondhand smoke.'
The study was originally for the American lung foundation, they just did not like the way it was going, so the truth did not matter did it? It was then the tobacco company stepped in. Stop the lies. You will not compensate those that go under, will you
First off, search that paragraph on google. There were a number of flaws with the study, no matter what its results may have been. Secondly, I PERSONALLY have breathed in secondhand smoke, so I know first hand whether it's bad for health or not. I know asthma sufferers who have had more breathing problems because of it. Now how about YOU stop the lies - will you compensate the families of those that die?
Oh well done. Give me a thumbs down because I'm not ashamed to quote my ACTUAL EXPERIENCE of my health having been affected by smokers, or the experience of others
You should tag this video with "smoking ban" as well as those tags you have used. This should bring you more views. This needs to be viewed by as many as possible.
I'm glad to see that someone is finally standing up for not only the Licensees but for the Punters too.
This vidoe covers everything that is on the tips of everyones' tongues but don't have the balls to say it. Good for you Pub Landlady, keep fighting the fight and maybe some day Pinky, you'll take over the world.
Thank you to everyone for all the support and kind comments it is greatly appreciated. Once again thanks and keep your eye out for more from The Pub Landlady I have a feeling that there will be a lot more on the way!! Happy New Year to everyone.
what a great video. At last someone is standing up to the pub cos. Theres a lot of valid and good points within the video. lets show these pub cos they cant get away with what they are doing!!
Well done, Inez. This is a very cogent and reasonable argument as well as informative and moving. I wish you and all associated with your movement every success. Michael at Freedom To Choose (Scotland) (And Belinda, who can't log in!)
I feel sorry for the landlords/ladies who feel between a rock & a hard place due to this smoking ban, they fear for their livelihood, but also never wanted this ban. They will find support at freedom2choosedotinfo
Prior to the smoking ban I spent my life propping up bars with my head buried in the sand. The smoking ban has opened my eyes to far wider issues that this government would prefer we simply didn't notice. When this ban is over, I will return to the bar but my eyes are open now, and I will continue to fight against this corrupted regime that places profit above freedom.
Until I joined F2C to fight this draconian smoking ban in the UK I didn't give a thought to the landlord/ladies of the pubs I drank in, they just existed, they were just there. Now, I realise, they are on the brink, if not losing, their livelihoods at the stroke of a pen. Now I will fight not only the ban but for this institution called THE PUB.
The destruction of The Great British Pub does affect everyone. Personally, I don't drink much but I can't walk into a pub without having a pint and a good time. We can't lose great tradition and culture to foolish politics or greedy organizations or anything else.
