  • y i don see the lyrics?

  • Uh, click the more info tab on the right.

  • what shitty lyrics, but nt bad

  • The Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence theme by Sakamoto Ryuichi is amazing, this version with lyrics by Utada Hikaru, well I don't really rate it very highly. Sorry.

  • The original- , Eh ...

Utada- A version you sing along to.

    Enough said.

  • i usually don't really like her english music but this is so catchy,

  • I like this song a lot but she could have done better withthe lyrics. This song it catchy. =)

  • Lady GaGa and Beyonce take notes, this is how a REAL crazy and random song should sound!

    lol jk ♥

  • Well idk about that <3 lol. But when it comes to Utada she is a better artist, then lady gaga and beyonce.

  • omgg!! what is that violin from the beginning fromm??

  • @BboyMaxwell i think it was from the anime Clannad or you mite have heard it from Sakomoto Ryuichi playing his song on the piano called Merry Christmas

  • na its a pino and a violin with some othe instrument i cant call out

  • from the original song :)

  • arruinó la canción!!!

  • I much prefer the Sakamoto Ryuichi version.

  • i think she sould revisit her old style..this album fun n is not pretended to be serious, just another stage in her career

...but honestly, her best songs are the japenese ones... final distance..be my last..sanctuary :) or the more experimental album exodus, loved it

    anyway, luv the "remake"!

  • I don't think she ruined the song, her voice is simply amazing.

The lyrics kinda fit the film, because she's saying "NYC NYC" and "Tokyo Tokyo", and in the film, the two heroes are an american soldier and a japanese soldier.

  • @NipponLife

If you're talking about the 1983 film, "Merry Christmas, Mr. Laurence", then I think you'll find that the two heroes were a BRITISH soldier and a Japanese soldier.

  • I sure hope she comes out with another english album. Her last one is very very hot.

  • Damn, this has be stuck in my head FOREVER.

    ...not that I mind....

  • utada is absolutely a great artist

    i love her

  • ...te amo UTADA!!!!!...

  • NYC NYC!!

    WHAT UP WHAT UP!!

    i luv saying dat part

  • nice!!

  • mp3 mp3 mp3!!

    dvd dvd dvd!!

    bluray bluray bluray!!

  • Lol. you're nice!

  • @LoStZ77 LMAO!

  • hahahhahahahah damn :) just like that, nice song but lyrics :)

  • Om Mani Padme Hum is actually a Buddhist chant O.O is she Buddhist?

  • Yes, Captain Picard is indeed known for both chilling and flossing.

  • hahaha

  • my name is called lawrence lol

  • the original is called Forbidden colours from the film merry xmas mr lawrence...amazing film!! I just love utada shes amazing!!

  • @raizarai David Sylvian's voice is an embarrassment to the entire song. Firstly he looks disgusting, secondly, his voice would make your ears bleed. Besides, the "original" version is just the piano version from Ryuichi Sakamoto.

  • No its beautiful and yes I know the "original" is Ryuichi Sakamoto I have the L.P on vinyl

  • @TheHireshi "secondly, his voice would make your ears bleed"<--- i can't agree with you any more!!!

the solo piano version is way better than David Sylvian's version!!!

    P.S. Utada's version is nice, too ;)

  • I really love the lyrics they are deep and beautiful.

  • my roommate love this song so much

  • @VieTom1 I agree but its a great song to pop too.. Every song has a use for it

  • In March 2009, Japanese Artist Utada Hikaru released the track "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" which uses the melody from Forbidden Colours.

    Idiot.

  • the original song is called merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Sakamoto Ryuichi. It was created for the movie Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence.

Forbidden Colours was released with David Boye adding lyrics to the original song.

so.....you're wrong. this is, the remix of Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence.

  • couldn't have said it better myself

  • niiiiiiiiice... I want to watch that show again

  • hey! i hear in this song sakamoto ryuchi

  • That's because this is a cover.

  • i love this song, i like it when she says "nyc nyc" "tokyo tokyo" and

    "mp3 mp3"

  • this song so intresting i Luv It !!!!!<3

  • i like the tune, its addicting

  • Wow, really...perverted? Aw, you people are so sensitive, it's cute! ^_^

...Also, yea, the actual song she based this one off of is better, but I like this edit too. Since I don't limit myself to liking only a few genres, this song holds a style...different to the one I'm used to when it comes to Utada...but it's still something I can't help but like. :)

Thanks for posting this video, as well as the lyrics!

  • There is nothing perverted in the whole song. What the heck are you talking about?

  • I'm loving this song!! Thank you Utada for making a song absolutely soulful!

  • @DeBaucheryZ We heard you, now shut up.

  • @DeBaucheryZ Hey friend. No need to be cantankerous. I'm not trash talking anyone. I'm just saying shut the fook up.

  • @DeBaucheryZ Hey riend. No need to be lackadaisic. I'm not trash talking anyone. I'm just saying there's a reason your messages are getting flagged as SPAM. :)

  • Awesome song!

  • Great song, but I don't like the lyrics.

They don't have much meaning and seems more like random ramblings.

This melody deserves awesome lyrics to go along with it.

  • 1:46 whuat whuat~

  • it took me ages to find this song.... I barely remembered if it was from a film, or anime (it's from the film). great tune, and film

  • なんか東南アジアの視聴多い

  • "Om Mani Padme Hum"

is actually "Oh my name got him there"

  • love this song <3

  • 私はこの曲は愛 ♥

  • Agree~

    ^^;;

  • wow 1 million views! Usually every video of Utada Hikaru that gets a million views gets flagged for copyright violation and is removed.

  • Altho I love the tune and beat and her voice I gotta say...these are some stupid lyrics.....

  • i agree, its such a beautiful beat and the lyrics are all 'gangster' lol kinda ruins it.

  • @aznkid50210 there is nothin gangster about her lyrics

    TRUST ME

    I SHOULD KNO

  • @FarAwayMagic , how would you know?

  • @theblackfeather CUz i just do, is it cuz its ending with in' cuz if so gangster is so not it I SEE NOTHIN GANGSTA!

  • @FarAwayMagic: and how, exactly, is it that you should know?

  • i didn't say i knew

  • i loved the film this musics from but the lyrics seem a bit odd and have nothing to do with it.

  • Yeah, the lyrics don't make much sense. It's not great compared to Utada-san's other songs. Don't you agree?

  • @RoyalRedArtist Haha...Um, I know EXACTLY what she's talking about in this song....

  • Lol. Haha. It doesn't have a 'real' meaning, does it? Lol.

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite song on the album.

  • yes "..damn right letting em know..." :D

    mine too...

  • can someone please tell me what "Om Mani Padme Hum" means and in what language. The reason is because it kinda sounds like Hindi? Or is it Japanese? PLEASE TELL ME!!!! i wanna know if Utada was speaking hindi so i can tell my hindi friend!

  • It's Tibetan mantra. You can type Om Mani Padme Hum in google and it'll tell you.

  • @JoeMama555yourmom "Om Mani Padme Hum" is actually Sanskrit (the "mother" language of Hindi), and it's a common chant used in Buddhism. However, I cannot tell you the exact meaning as I don't necessarily understand the saying myself.

  • OH ok, it's ok i just saw om and i was like "ok isnt that hindi?" and i was reading it but no answer of what it was came in my head. Any way thank you for telling me a little on what it means at least i got something! and my thanks also goes to "SuperUtada" ^^

  • can some one tell me what "Om Mani Padme Hum" means like in translation, Because it sounds kinda like hindi or is it Japanese just tell me OR IS IT IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE!!!

  • Her voice is fantastic and it's beautiful, i love her talent, and on how she chooses different genres of music. When i was a kid i saw the commercial of kingdom hearts and i was only into it because it played "simple and clean" by Hikki, I loved that song so much but sadly i only knew the chorus and never wanted to forget that voice.

  • the song merry christmas mr. lawrence was written by ryuichi sakamoto...the lyrics for this arrangement though were most probably written by utada hikaru herself... in an interview she mentioned that she writes her own lyrics

  • OMGDDDD WOW!!

  • Wait, after I read the lyrics.... I saw that it's actually rather sugguestive. I mean, "I'm gonna be yours tonight, We're gonna... aaahh oooh, FYI we're gonna be up all night...." I dunno.... Oh well, it's not like she wrote the song, so she's still awesome XD

  • She did write the song? Or do you mean the music?

  • No, I mean the lyrics are sugguestive, but I don't think she wrote the lyrics. I know the music isn't by her though.

  • Ah, yes. Utada writes all her lyrics. LOl

  • She doesn't actually "write" them per se. Have you seen the South Park episode about how Family Guy is made? This is like that.

  • @sweetfactory20 I think she did cuz at the "in the flesh" concert she said she writes all her music n i believe she said that in a interview for this album as well.. but idk i could be wrong.

  • This song has really grown on me.

  • man i love her songs

  • so random lol..

  • this song is hot!

  • You know what, I always wondered what an "Om mani padme hum" was so I googled it to find that it is a Buddhist mantra. Om=Generosity Ma=Ethics Ni=Patience Pad= Diligence Me=Renunciation and Hum= Wisdom. I think thats so cool how she incorporated something like this into her lyrics :)

  • がんばって!宇多田ヒカルちゃん大好き☆

  • I prefer the one by Ryuichi Sakamoto

  • UTADA IS THE BEST .

  • Amazing!

  • Oh! I like her sweater! Very pretty! :D

  • Utada (x

  • OMG UTADA IS AMAZING WOW!!!

  • Usually I love Utada but this kills the entire mood I get from the original.

  • wish the lyrics would be about the original movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawerence" instead cause it's really sad.

  • saw her performing this in Boston! Great show!!

  • Comment removed

  • yeah she came on Feb 5th to the Boston Paradise Rock Club. It was an amazing show. Sorry you didn't hear of it =(

  • that really upsets me!! : ( that was last friday too ...can someone punch me for missing this. jeez ...

  • Was there a lot of people there? I wish I could support her more so she can have a successful career in the US but she didn't have a show where I live. So I just buy her CD's

  • im soo pissed i didn't know of this...

  • UTADA Ftw!!

  • this song feels more like a utada song

    others are diffrent which okay

  • I would like this song more if it didn't sample Sakamoto Ryuichi's song. It's sort of insulting to Sakamoto.

Don't get me wrong, I love Utada. It's just that sampling that song makes her look cheap.

  • >implying most of her songs aren't samples

    >implying, implying, implying

    >implications

  • @kojimanaked

What do you mean? Are you talking about "Never Let Go?" Because that's completely different.

I'm not against her sampling good songs. I wish she would do it in a way that isn't so tacky.

  • @Miyah11x

    shut up and listen...

    trou du cul

  • The first 10 seconds sounds like from the "Time to say goodbye" song.

  • Uhh...I don't know if anyone else said it (but I'm sure someone did) But this song was based off of the movie "Merry Christmas,Mr Lawrence." Like, all the lyrics in here relate to the movie.

    But anyways!

    I love this song <3

  • This song seems so sad!

  • I'll be hollering Hikki, got your number

  • i'm so fell in love with this song... ever since it come out!!! i really hope utada make a MV with this great song... Utada gambatte ne~~

  • To everyone in this thread, you are clearly biased since you have your own tastes, and should refrain from commenting.

  • It's nonlinear song writing.

songs dont have to be narratives. take from it what you will.

  • it's based on an old Japanese drama. Maybe you should watch the drama. It was about a man who wanted to still be in the clubbing and female game even though he was older, and had a family, and full-time job. So he's trying to spit game at younger girls. Watch it, and you might understand it. Poetry is often not understood by everybody, because it is self-expression.

  • what was the japanese drama called?

  • why would you think people are making this up? I can't stand ignorant fools like you. Go watch the interviews your self you dumbass.

  • @zohanthecspro I would not say that. Maybe it's your point of view that there's no sense in that song at all, but I think even because the words seem so shuffled on the first look, you have much room for interpretating the meaning of the song. I don't want to say that the song has an obvious tail, but sometimes the truly meaning is hidden and you have to search for it. ;)

  • Yknow, people like you really scare the shit outta me all the time through your pensive literature. Its a compliment btw. anw, I can say that people who have much free time would be able to interpret and find the hidden meanings for Deep songs like this, but for ordinary people like me, i dont think everybody has time to understand the hidden message conveyed in this song, thus we tend to assume that it sucks. Its not really about ignorance, but more of human nature.

  • @zohanthecspro

I don't really know what to make of the song either, but I'm sure it has some meaning to it...I mean, she was born in NYC and she's fluent in English, so it can't be completely random. O.o

  • must see anggun-seize the moment too u guys!! xD

  • I really wanna dance to this song...Jamming into freestyle....Great Song Utada

  • BELLISSIMA!!!

  • Utada said in a Miami interview that she put Captain Picard in the song because she thought him to be a laid back guy. Hence "I'm chillin' and flossin'" doesn't necessarily mean that Picard is doing so.

She references the movie MCML in her songs with the grass and fields and apparently Ching-a-ling is a song from David Bowie who starred in the film MCML and he is also the one who added lyrics into Ryuichi's MCML.

This song is not random at all but skillfully written.

  • Yes, Ching-a-ling is a song by David Bowie. You can search it up on youtube.

    I like it. HAHA~!

  • +1 for Utada referencing David Bowie.

  • om mani padme hum

    is a buddhist saying.

it means jewel in the lotus

  • I like the music, but I really love her voice and lyrics, and I really really love the piano...

  • Utada is completely fluent in both Japanese and English.

  • Like SuperUtada said, we'll sing with her "ooh aah" is way to warm up our voices. We're going to be up all night singing and dancing to her songs.

  • "I don't want a free loader" means that she doesn't want people to listen to her songs, UNLESS they put a piece of their own heart and soul into listening to them. She also doesn't want people to make blind assumptions and make no effort to find any hidden, deeper meaning in her songs.

  • "Chardonnay and the fields where the grass is lime" are also references to how she wants her songs to be heard around the world. The fields were in the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

NYC and Tokyo are her ties to Western civilization and Eastern civilization...the places where she grew up.

  • "Ching-a-ling" is Eastern Asian symbolism, which is the sound of bells. The sound of bells means 'I'm coming, I'm coming'. "Om Mani Padme Hum" is a Buddhist manta seeking peace. The 'I'm going to be yours tonight' doesn't necessarily mean sex, it could mean her fans going to bed and using her songs to ease themselves and fall asleep. Sipping Chardonnay on a working day at 2PM means she tries to find the time BETWEEN relaxing and working.

  • "Senorita, Tokyo, NYC, and Captain Picard (space)", are all references to how Utada wants her songs to be heard all throughout the world. "I'm always at your service, you just have to holla at me" means that she's always there for you, you just need to try to get to know her. When she says "send it up from the streets", she's talking about her music on mp3 players. Her "hustlers" are her fans.

  • I think you're going waaaay too deep into this.

A couple of those points were definitely valid, though. But all the exact fan stuff isn't like THAT deep I don't think...

Especially the captain picard and chardonnay thing, I doubt those are references to how she wants her music heard around the world.

PLus, some of those lyrics aren't even correct.

  • Those lyrics are correct.

Captain Picard, the only thing I could think of is space, since he's from Star Trek. Chardonnay is from France. There is indeed a large amount of cultural references in this song, so that's how I interpret it.

Our dear Hikki can write very cryptic lyrics when she wants to.

  • You seem to mistake cryptic for good.

  • Everyone interprets songs differently. Did you read my interpretation?

You seem to mistake cryptic for bad..

  • If they're so cryptic why are you sure they're about that then? Its probably an inside joke for her. You're reading too far into it, Chardonnay, I doubt she was thinking "That drink is from france therefore people will know I want people all over the world to listen to my music.

And that was my mistake about the lyrics thing. When you first posted chardonnay and grass I thought you meant that was the whole line together.

  • Like I said, "Chardonnay" could also be taken in account for the entire line it is from, which is "We're drinking Chardonnay from 2PM on a working day." I stated that it could also mean that she finds the time between relaxing and working.

  • going to see her in chicago :)

  • Maybe the best song on the album.

  • I really liked listening to Ryuichi Sakamoto's piece "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", especially in the context of the movie. Even if the melody of the song is used here, it isn't the same at all.

  • I heard the melody in the beginning somewhere else before, does somebody know how it is called?

  • @prologueHEAVEN Ryuichi Sakamoto original version - used in the film of the same name

  • @seanfca Thankyouuuu!! :'D

  • the melody in the beginning of this song is taken from the soundtrack of the move, "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence", hence the name of this song. in fact this whole song is about that movie. it's not so obvious because Utada meant for song to be a double-meaning.

  • thanks!

  • you're welcome!

  • People still don't understand the lyrics? Well, this song is for her older fans anyway. New fans won't understand her lyrics and how she intends things to be double etendres, shout outs and more.

  • I'm a fan of 7 years, and I still don't get them all. Care to explain?

  • I'm a fan of 7 years as well.

The lines: "I give you my heart, hold on let me sign it" She released her HEART STATION album recently before in 2008 and on the case it has Utada Hikaru's autograph on it.

"You're senorita aka your best friend" she is our senorita, our women/lady and she considers us to be her best friend more than fans.
