My sun conure hasn't pooped on me in a while. When she starts to get a little nippy I know she needs to use the restroom and she flies back to her cage
I have a girl and she sometimes forgets her's pooping place and poops on me or my computer, lol! I try to teach her every time, I also have a magic poop word, which sometimes works. She talks and ask me for cookies, water, makes gestures with her legs. She is very interactive with me. She loves making holes on my t-shirts, that sucks...
@Blowkewl Same to u asshole. And let me add that I also had a pair of Indian ringneck parrots that were even louder than the conure. The lil fuckers drove me crazy so I burned them alive. Aerosal spray and a lighter.
@Blowkewl I bought the conure from a guy next door who had to move cross country, but the 2 ringnecks were given to me. I would like to get another parrot that will at least sit on my finger, but the motherfuckers never do.
i got my peach fronted conure when he was 10, and now he will be 13 this august. i have his complete and total trust & he is my baby, he cries when i leave the room and will follow if possible, i can lay him on his back in my hand, on a chair, wherever and he will stay.. he's my little one.(: anyway, could age effect the whole potty training thing? because i would like to train him to go in his cage if possible... his first go in the morning is HORRIBLE and then all day he goes whever he wants.
omg how neat! I'm getting my 1st baby this weekend... I'm sooooo excited! She's a disabled "special needs" (was bullied by large birds when an abusive home stuck her in a bird cage OUTSIDE ALL YEAR unsupervised w/lots of larger parrots, who ended up bullying her & breaking her wings. =( So sad). So she'll need some help & lots of work to become trusting, but is fairly nice & has had a lot of work already. I took a bird class last wk & am learning all I can. This is great. How long did it take?
@kewguys My Conure always flies back to his cage too! He's even flown from one bedroom, across the house to another room where his cage was... did his thing, then flew back.. That's just crazy :) People don't realize just how smart little birds are!
Its good to remember that positive refinforcement works. My sun conure is also potty trained. I have met people that don't believe it but she is and will go to her potty place on her own.
@coffeecupfever :D I just got mine today! He is a little under a year, I want to use "bombs away" as my key word but I have no idea how to get him to know what it means. A little help?
@wolfur1 Hey, Everytime I could see he was ready to go, I just said "bombs away". Then in the morning for the big one haha. I would put him over the toilet and say bombs away.
@coffeecupfever Thank you so much for responding! I have started to noticed that everytime he is about to go potty he fluffs his feathers then goes. So lets get a recap:
Everytime he goes potty and I notice say "Bombs away" and sooner or later he will relize its a key word and when he does I then put him over the item I wish him to go in and say "bombs away"?
Again thank you for responding, this is my first time training a bird.
@wolfur1 Yeah, just use that as your key phrase. and reward with cuddles & scratches haha. You will very soon be able to spot when a poop is coming, they puff up, wings up. bum down. bombs away. Good luck in training.
We say "good boy poo poo" ever time our sun, Mango poops...and immediately pick him up from the perch. This is his best reward, as he'd rather be on someone's shoulder than anywhere else. Then after 15 mins or so, we take him back to the perch and he will immediately poop again. Repeat.
My only concern is that he will not poop inside his cage now. Ever. So every morning--or If we are gone for several hours--he has to work at pooping and it is a huge amount. This was not our goal!
@Botheparrot So what is the general technique then, cuz obviously they don't know to go there & once at the designated spot, probably dunno what you want them to do. So do u just wait till they finally go there then give'em a treat like w/dogs... then if you see him going somewhere you don't want, take him over to the "potty spot?" And how many tries does it commonly take w/conures in general? They say dogs= 15-25 tries to finally connect the dots to the puzzle & realize what u want.... tbc...
@Botheparrot ....sorry ran outta room. So w/my dog, I'd find a behavior I wanted to reinforce (like her cute way of scratching her nose w/her paws I wanted her to do on command) then whenev she did it, use same words "good girl, scratch nose! Yay!" ("Yay" is her praise word she knows means she did soemthing right). But idk how birds ability to understand english (ovr just repeat what they hear) compared to dogs? Dogs have bout the understanding of a 2 yr old child they say, but its my 1st conure

How did you start to get her to do that? I wouldn't know where to begin on training mine.

Bo trained himself. Goes ion the trash can next to his cage. He goes when he needs to go.
Positive reinforcement did it. He does it every time he can. He can be trusted not to go on people or furniture.
There's a video. . .
Suns are easy to train.

Conures are especially easy to teach potty training as they are very clean birds by nature. I have three girls, all potty trained.
