Yamaha's best R1 in my opinion was the 2008 model, they did their best work last year but this is ugly. I think they should've just changed colour scheme's and a few engine tweek's, better tyre's and that's it.

Dude... those headlights look like berals with eyes. This bike is definitely way more aggressive than the 04/07. I don't even want to compare it with the gsxr k9 (a complete mistaken design).

A change had to come, it's been 4 years with almoast the same looks. Trust me it looks wickedsick!

Sorry, I have to disagree, my opinion is that they've ruined certainly the looks of this bike. The performance may well be enhanced, but at what cost? The best looking Jap bike of the last several years, and then they do this.

Oh absolutely, opinions on looks/beauty etc are totally subjective, in my case, all I'm saying is, I've given it a week and a half to see if it'd grow on me and it... just.. hasn't. I actually prefer the 08 Ninja which is madness. I wonder if they'll keep this look from now on?

I would like to have seen the lads at Yamaha be a little braver and redesign the R1. Their options were to keep a successful styling, tinker with it and make it worse, or totally redesign it. I wish they'd done that.

you can only have a form shaped bike for so long. With Honda and Kawasaki making function shaped machinery and having them nearly stomp the shit out of the Yamaha, a new style is needed. i will agree with the look- I love the old R1 and the old CBR1000RR, but to truly achieve performance, all you have to do is look at what shape the GP guys rely on, which is this small, snubby look that Honda, kawasaki, and now Yamaha have used.

Again, I would agree with the technical, functional aspects over form. All I'd say is that I wish they'd had a little more conviction and go in a different direction. They've made a good looking bike less so, and perhaps, with that in mind, ought to have considered a radical overhaul of the design itself? In retrospect, the 08 Blade is starting to grow on me, but this bike hasn't yet. Perhaps, given more time it will. Will be interesting to see how it performs in next years WSBs.

Sadly, I don't know if this yamaha will grow on me at all. While the honda was radically different, it still had style. this new r1 looks like it was almost thrown together. it seems no two lines on the bike follow, it appears as though it was a normal R1 that was smashed and banged in the middle, creating a weak looking center.

I hope Suzuki looks good for 09 or 10, whenever they update. While the Honda HAS grown on me, and the Kawsaki isn't as God awful as I originally thought, there is no doubt that bikes are undergoing some pretty drastic changes that fans of style from the late 90's until now will not enjoy at first.

You haven't seen the 09 gixer thousand? Look it up, i think they improved on it big time. Looks wise at least, i dunno know the specs (don't trust specs anyhow). also for '09, honda is releasing an ABS version of the 1000RR and 600RR. bikes are turning into cars - traction control, ABS... what's next? training wheels?

I think I'll keep my 06 R1 for now. Maybe a set of aftermarket pipes will make the 09 look OK from the rear.

I don't like the fact the motor is bound to vibrate more because of the engine configuration.

Hope they have fixed the problem of all that heat over the rider's legs.

Great looking bike and headlights look really good. About time they actually made it look like a new design. I think those exhausts look great from some angles but side on it makes the bike look really heavy at the rear. Like the wheelbarrow pipes on a 2006 ZX10 only worse!

yeah... the pipes remind me of a ZX-10 as well, and i can't decide if i like the headlight or not. Reminds me of the 1998 front end, which i like. but i dunno about the bulging projector lights. :/ maybe i'll grow on me.
