You have to realise that tradition changes as public attitudes and populations change.
Here is a good example of RCMP changing their traditions.
In the late 1950s, only Canadian and British white male citizens were able to join the ranks.
In the 1960s, new members had to be single at recruitment, and keep that civil status for the first five years of service, in other words no marriage or your fired.
Why "Royal"? Do they work for the Queen of England or something? Why "Mounted"? Do they all ride horses? I think the "Royal Canadian Mounted Police" needs an upgrade.

As for mounted, yes the RCMP are a mounted force (thus the yellow stripe) though for practicality reasons vehicles are used. The musical ride carries on the traditions.
