Civil War erupted and ended with Taliban de facto govt. Sure they executed criminals but don't tell me US doesn't have a death penalty - u let rich murderers like OJ Simpson go but execute poor people all the time. What's the diff? There are Pashtun, Baluchs, Kazaks, Haraz, Uzbeks, etc. Most are Islamic but even in Islam there Shiite and Sunni who do not like each other. Some Pashtun & Baluchs are fighting for their autonomy from Pakistan and the rest of Afghan, which you never hear in the media....

@gunhugger16 There were at least 7 major Mujahidin groups fighting the Soviets, most were not friends with each other, some supported by US, Iran and other Middle East countries. When Soviets left, they fought each other for control. Taliban was a movement that became victorious cuz they were able to get support of the people - people wanted the Taliban to win cuz they were seen to end the anarchy. Saudi Arabia, UAE and Pakistan recognized them as the legit govt of Afghan in 1994.
