  • I would argue that LaBrie sounds BETTER nowadays than he did back in the olden days. With age has come the maturity to know not to abuse his voice. He sounds much more consistent nowadays because he's not belting out high notes left right and center. He is also much clearer, all in all a much better singer. With the exception of Learning To Live, he doesn't seem to have pitch problems in recent times.

Young LaBrie (Album) > Current LaBrie (Live) > Current LaBrie (Album) > Young LaBrie (Live).

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE HE HIT THOSE NOTES FLAWLESSLY LIVE! he sounded shaky in the beginning but, DAMN he exploded like a bomb hitting those holy notes!

  • @MetaldoseAli he's the BEST! i'm worried.. now he can't hit these notes anymore..

  • give LaBrie a break, he's singing more than 3 hours of high pitched DT songs every other nights and is affected by jet lag all the time, but I'm sure he's trying to do his best

  • This are the "Real Dream Theater",the best team for ever!

  • labries voice is better in the studio album :/

  • My fav solo to play at the guitar shop.

  • i think most of the vocals who played band for many years will finally lose their ability to reach the high notes they could reach before =(

  • Not enough comments on Portnoy.

  • @MIKEPEARTNOY Cause people have sense. He's not dream theater. This video is not about one person

  • I hope they can still make music like this, not just heavy aggressive music like DT today.

  • I am a big fan of DT, but this performance is one of their worst....

  • @antoninosabetta so the 95 one is better? This is a fucking amazing performance, to bad James gritter to much in the other songs so he has a sour throat otherwise it would be better than the original

  • @meryuin I do not know which one you are citing, this one is just not a high quality performance as most people seem to maintain here; and as I clarified in another comment, I'm referring to the poor performance of J. Labrie (I know there is a reason for that, but that doesn't make the performance any better, sorry)

  • @antoninosabetta Not really...

  • @OneTakeJesus I'm mostly criticising Labrie here: just in the first verse of the song, the intonation is "sloppy" at least twice (on the 'I' of "find", and on "no" in "another reason").... And the rest of the song isn't any better....

  • really amazing song!!!

  • progressive rock 4 ever

  • How can someone dislike this?

  • the bridge of this song is some of the most powerful and moving music i've ever heard.

  • @moyersshred TOTALLY AGREE MAN

  • old DT FTW!!! xD

  • Best live performance of James I've heard on this song. The force was strong with him in this one!

  • @ddteagleeye Agree I do

  • Labrie sucks!! Now that I have your attencion... Labrie is the god of voices ;)

  • elba ramalho?

  • dream theater rules

  • if labrie return to sing like here he will return to be the best singer of the world tooyhis performance is perfect

  • @JOSELUIS151289 hahaha gay??? listen then to some men music like gorgoroth hahahahahahaha

  • LaBrie sounds pretty good here.

  • I miss James' old voice. And the great sense of melody they had back then. Right now it's like they're always getting technical with their music, less soul than they had then. Sure there are some great newer songs, but if they made a remix of the whole images and words and awake album, I'd listen to them all day. I think I've lost my DT spirit. :( This is just my opinion, no need to flame me about DT being the best band in the world and all. I'm still looking forward to their next album though

  • @DannyLimardi I agree with you, it's not that their newer songs/albums are not good, but there is things i miss in the old days of dt. Their music now is more aggressive than progressive.

  • @DannyLimardi I agree with you, it's not that DT's newer songs/album are not good, it's just that there are things from the old DT music that i really miss, like the way they wrote the song, John's guitar solo parts today are like taken off from their previous songs, and he always do the same thing, like the tapping, intervalic string skipping, and shredding, i hope he come up with fresh new ideas for the coming albums. I still like them today.

  • @DannyLimardi I think the thing that gets me the most about their newer album is ... it feels kind of devoid of feeling for me. As a kid of twelve, I listened to Awake, Scenes and Images and Words and felt really uplifted and inspired. It really got me through some hard times. I listen to their newer works and I just feel nothing. I guess its not very .. dreamy.

  • @ 2:35 LaBrie really sounds like a god. Great performance of a great song.

  • Attention to all vocals on the planet... La Brie hold classes, just hurry...

  • this distance in my voice isn't leaving you a choise... he's right. you have to be damn good to sing this perfectly

  • nice live version

  • @cfaeslehc1905 yes

  • @cfaeslehc1905 It's not fair to compare James LaBrie to a vocalist like King Diamond because they are completely different in what they try to do. "Different" does not equal "worse".

  • @cfaeslehc1905 yeah! /: u're alone...

  • @cfaeslehc1905 are you joking? Maybe one of the most beautiful Labrie performance .

  • coitado cantou mal pra caranba

  • James LaBrie is a great singer

  • 0:40 ... LABRIE SUCKS......

  • Love this song

  • Really good song

  • @cfaeslehc1905 yeah. I bet he hates your voice more.

  • @cfaeslehc1905 Maybe you just don't appreciate how good damn hard it is to sing live.

  • I like his voice, I like Dream Theater, but I still think he sings like Pinky, from "Pinky and The Brain" XD

  • i'm really impressed by him nailing this song live. clap clap clap.

  • Wow his voice is really good. This was before he ruptured it through food poisoning??

  • @MikelSeo yh, he ruptured them shortly after the awake album

  • music had more sense back then. keep on rockin' DT \m/

  • Is this at budokon?

  • 3:07. o god

  • labrie was awesome...

  • Is he singing in English? Jesus enunciate man.

  • I hate you Labrie's voice poisoning accident =(

  • Dream theater and especially James Labrie's voice is verry hard. I am working for kinda 2 years on building a powerful and secure vocal range like he but it's verry hard.

  • back then when everyone had long hairs :)

  • UNFORGETTABLE !

  • MAUHAHAH AND THIS IS THE BEST VOICE???? muhahahah how many times is he going out of tune??? MAUHAHAHAHAHAH RIDICOLOUS!!!

  • @PichettoFratame do what he did, can you?? if you can't, please put your foot into your mouth and SHUT UP !!

  • @firstiiz I agree, back then, he had an amazing voice, and usually he sang pretty good, but unfortunately, vocals are hard to control (out of experience) and this wasn't his best take.....

  • Wish Labrie didn't screw up his voice :(

  • เก่งหวะเล่นได้ยังไงพี่จอห์น

  • I love this drummer

  • i felt in love of the labrie voices here just : OMFG...

  • 2:09, amazing..

  • @xFpsPwnagex 0:00 - 4:47 , amazing...

  • @rushsubdivisions DREAM THEATER ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @xFpsPwnagex PERFECT!!! LIKE STUDIO VERSION!!!

  • @Flaviaccio Yesyes! :D

  • It seems that John's is playing the whole solo on the neck pickup... that's interesting cause I thought the first half (till the fast bit comes in) was played with the bridge for a more agressive sound...

  • I love the old labire.. it was just awesome...

  • 2:10 LaBrie enters God mode, and lasts until 3:54

  • I know this is just a random question - Is kevin moore related to Vinnie Moore? they looked the same hahahahahaha

  • Where did you get this info ? : Hermida Tech Zendrive.

  • No words for these images... DT is another reality...

  • No words for those images...

  • Just curious.... Is Kevin Moore related to Vinnie moore? They do look alike afterall..... hehehe

  • @unitedwar yea this is before the awake tour where he blew his voice out. he had such amazing control over his voice back then. i think he's pretty much gotten back that level of control today, but its still not as good. because when you blow your voice out, you really damage it. so the fact that he has gained back that level of control is amazing. it took like.. almost 15 years, but he did it. lol but regardless, one of the great and prolly most underrated vocalists of our day.

  • tht down beat at 4:23 was off... not talkin shit :) i fukin love dream theater.. my favorite band<3

  • dream theater is my favorate band but they are some pretty weird and ugly mutha fuckas

  • Young Petrucci <3 <3

  • now guys, lets stop arguing with each other, and lets grab a beer :D

  • Does anybody know the guitar delay settings for this song?

    intro

    chorus

    solo

    thanks.

  • @UnixStudios if i know john he s prolly using a 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay by tc electronic... you could prolly find out at his web site or his forum ive got alot of answers from his forum. hope this helps:)

  • @UnixStudios For the intro and solo the delay setting are the same and you should do tap tempo delay where you synchronise the delay with the drum beats (either 8th notes or 1/4 note). You don't use delay for chorus. Use some reverb.

  • @botman1 Thank you but I don't think he taps on anything while changing presets. I need the actual time in MilliSeconds so I can save it on a preset in my TC Electronic D-TWO.

thanks tho I guess it's kinda between 350 and 420 ms.

    best.

  • @UnixStudios yea you don't need to have the EXACT timing on a concert since you never know what the tempo will be until you start playing the song :D I guess JP has his rig built in such a way that he can tweak the delay speed with his pedal. Just stick to the original version, tap tempo it and store it on your pedalboard. That'll do.

  • @botman1 trust me they have the EXACT times on everything already programmed just like The Edge. Let's say there's a song with a delay time of 350 you can not change that time to 400 because that's obviously gonna throw the repeats OFF time with everything else. Unless the drummer decides to speed things up or slow down, but changing the delay times of a song onstage is kind of a no no. I bet he has tap tempo in his 2290's but the delays go according to the setlist.

  • one of their best songs.

  • the best of all

  • Kevin Moore's Voice sounds so fucking annoying.

  • @emperorof420 Kevin's voice is annoying? Good thing he didn't say anything here. James' singing is awesome though.

  • 3.37 his only mistake ever???!!!

  • 3:49 lol

    FANTASTIC!

    LABRIE(L)

  • Jhon Petrucci > You

  • james falters @ the opening of the song

  • WHERE'S THE COOL-ASS SOPRANO SAX SOLO?

  • the vocals arent good live, its sour!

    In my oppinion

  • steve vai is my favorate guitarist ever but ive seen him and dream theater live and i tell you petrucci blew him away, tone, soul, everything. dream theater live is like nothing ive every seen. beautiful music experience, true artists, every one of them.

  • @rushsubdivisions he was saying people need to listen in depth a little more with Petrucci, not bashing him.

  • BeSt SoNg EvEr!!:-)

  • James LaBrie's performance here is mind blowing.

  • Pro: James LaBrie's vocals; Con: Kevin Moore playing the sax part on keyboards. Ever hear of samples, Kevin?

  • @mitalca35 they don't use a click live, so maybe the tempo is a little different.. and the studio sample would give some problems

  • @mitalca35 That was early 90's. Even samples didn't even sounded realistic.

  • 3:48-3:53 FUCKING EPIC

  • oh! my god good instrumental heavy metal band!!

  • @The07namme that wasnt instrumental...

  • 1:02 -1:04 wtf is Labrie doing with that hand?!

  • @I66Mhz yeh no shit, it was a joke moron.

  • @jaxpower1 orly?

  • @jaxpower1 hahaha nice one.. unfortunathly it seems like people cant understand the joke

  • you've never noticed him because he's too ninja like that

  • @YtseJohn525 ahahaha gg

  • @jaxpower1 yeah, it is unfortunate actually. ah well, i understood, some people are just morons themselves

  • @MulletMan3108 what can you do, at least it got a lot more positive comments than negative.

  • fani how teh sax iz play'd by kevin müre

  • i love dream theater

  • James is awesome, lawlerz.

  • This performance wasn't perfect, but definately great! :)

  • @mortenhen yeah I heard Labrie was a little bit off in the beginning but still I can't imagine Dream Theater without Labrie. And nevertheless he is one of the best singers in my opninion.

  • damn, it was right after his vocal chords damage

  • Yeah, for real, man. Give him a break. Before it happened, he was phenomenal live, and he's recuperated well in recent years.
