I imagine that at the end of my life, I'll ask the Universe all those questions that people ask at that time. I also imagine I'll receive the answers.......... hearing this voice.
@DeanLeonard1 It's also a beautiful approximation of the existentialist view, both the secular and the Christian variety. We can only choose what we do.
"All our songs will be silenced... What of it? Go on singing!" I saw the film some 30 years ago while in university, and to this very day, this passage and these words are still etched in my memory. Sublime!
I agree that the audio is not great, but please listen again. Welles is saying that -- for all of the depressing aspects of life and the fact that all of us and our loved ones will one day die -- we all have song, music, art, and spirit within us. So we should keep living life to the fullest and find beauty in life.

You're kidding ... No resonating stir of emotion or cognitive dissonance or cosmic outpouring ... no internal ideation of any sortl? Nothin'??? Just "I don't get it, 'wats' so fascinating about this? Jeez, better have your doctor check you for a heartbeat. And get your damn hearing checked out too!
how Orson loved the sound of his own voice !Babbling on any subject was indeed his forte...hence his popularity on the talk show circuit! a master of style over substance...listen to him for a while and you actually start believing he has something profound to say...fake indeed!
Thanks for uploading this. F for Fake is one of my fav movies and this is one of the parts I like the most. This monologue is one of the best Wells bits ever!

This is a very poignant reminder of the Buddhist concept of impermanence. Nothing lasts.

Let's face it -- Welles was a bad ass. That segment is touching and profound. It is one of the best in cinema.

Thanks for the Sartre quote, userblue. Maybe Sartre was watching Orson's movies with his bad eye.
TheLastSmoker 4 years ago 4
Quite agree, Sartre was wrong.

Very existentialist. I wonder if Welles ever met Sartre.

Sartre: "Orson Welles's oeuvre well illustrates the drama of the American intelligentsia which is rootless and totally cut off from the masses."
Apparently not a fan, then.
