Fabulous! Her voice isn't as beautiful as it used to be but, who's is? This is true theater. She has changed the rules of the game to suit the talents she has now.
Bless her heart...she just doesn't have enough "voice" for the role...her timbre has really not deepened as she aged...all the gulps and croaking are an attempt to make it as dramatic as it needs to be when she doesn't have the natural voice to do it. And there's no reason to debate her wiry pianissimos that are out of character or the out of tune shrieks. Valiant attempt, but she really shouldn't attempt it again.
hard to understand that noone is even mentioning Pavol Breslik !? He´s a revelation, the best tenor of our times! "madre, io moro..." - simply magic!!! and on top of that, so handsome...
I'll say one thing about Edita: you can't take your eyes off her. Gruberova is an animal of the stage; a natural performer. She's incredibly interesting to watch every moment she's out there. Girlfriend is committed to this drama.
Well, thanks God there's still someone who seems to reason without worshipping the former goddesses.
I can't really understand how a singer like Gruberova, whose past successes are well known, can decide to spoil her whole career with such a ridicolous performance... She looks like a horrifying combination of an old drag queen and a bad actress of the 1920s.
Poor Donizetti, he should not deserve such a treatment.
you forgot a part of the combintion "horrible singer". she should have shoved the wig down her throat to keep those horrible moans, chest implosions and squeaks from coming out.
I agree. She is simply no longer in postion to sing such a demanding role. She doesn't venture to sing the low notes required by Donizetti and her " Sul mio capo" is one the ugliest I have ever heard.
I have seen three Lucrezia performances in Munich. Every time was phantastic and very moving. Read what the international press wrote. You just cannot tell how great Gruberova's performance was by listening to this poor sound-quality movie...
I'm glad for you, Belcantofan. For me there's no more emotion in that voice. There's plenty of singers that I love: Callas, Sutherland, Caballé, Sills and many others, Gencer. But I NEVER listen to their late performances, it's a sufference.
I prefer to remember Gruberova as the Queen of the Night. And if I wanna listen to Lucrezia, well, there's still Devia...
No she will not. She will do Borgia in Vienna and Anna Bolena in Barcelona in 2010/2011, but after that she will, so she says, retire. Still not sure about here last season (10/11 or 11/12), but for sure not after that. Yes, I know, I am gonna miss her too!
This season she's doing Ariadne auf Naxos, Norma, I puritani, Robert Devereux, Norma. and Lucrezia Borgia. I wouldn't even recommend that schedule for a much younger soprano.
Of course you wouldn't. To do that schedule + dozen of concerts in between, you have to be smart and you have to know what you are doing, and, she does know: she is singing one at the time, 2-3 days of break between each performace, she's not edding new roles, etc.
I saw/heard Pavol Breslik in Eugine Onegin, and was so pleased in his Lenski. This video only confirms that he is a great tenor. Bravo e bravissimi!
