Oh the life of the Virginia Didelphidea Domesticus. Here in Oregon, where we have nothing but possums, it's illegal to have one as a pet. Sometimes I think about moving just so I can rescue one. I will pet him and love him and call him George.
Hello. I don't recommend them as pets, but they are interesting creatures. My g/f and I were both Veterinary Technicians, she still is, so we have a lot of experience with animals. :)
I've done a lot of research on the net and possums actually come well recommended as pets. Like any animal and responsible pet owner you really need to do your research before getting any animal so you know their needs, advantages, downfalls and health concerns but there is a wealth of practical experience out there to be found. Your hear about issues with many kinds of animals (such as raccoons) but not possums. They even are immune to rabies.
Agreed. But the majority of pet owners have difficulty taking care of common cats and dogs, mostly due to their lack of education. Sometimes it's due to their philosophy of pet care. Regardless I don't recommend them as pets unless, as you describe, they are the type of person who is willing to do research. For the average pet owner, a opossum wouldn't be good choice as a pet.
PS It is illegal in NE to keep one as a pet. Only certified Wildlife Rescue handlers can take them in if injured.
