A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.
I don't think the movie's premise will work. The Bible and/or parts of it has been published in more than 2,300 languages & thus is available to more than 90% of the world's population: making it the undisputed most widely published book in history (ask the Guinness Book of World Records). Not to mention the electronic versions. And the only one saved after a global catastrophe was a single Braille copy(?!)
@TheRonMorales - This premise does work, as its not based on that this was the only book that survived the apocalypse, it was that all bible's were destroyed by men as they understood how those could use it to control others, however god guided one man to a copy that wasn't destroyed and guided him on a mission to take it to somewhere safe. It's not saying its the ONLY copy to survive, just that its the only one known at that time.
@Anterooni The idea is that society decided that the Bible only caused wars with religious objectives, and all of them must be destroyed. The reason it was the only book to survive was because it was a book made for the blind. Very few could recognize what the book actually was, so that particular book survived. It had been 30 years since the Nuclear War, so any that could be found (They had been searching extensively), would have been used to create the well know society the villain dreamed of.
So what did practising Christians make of this film? I thought the fact that it was called the "book of Eli" was obviously meant to mean that this was to be taken in the same manner as say the book of job. God gives Eli a mission which he must accept completely on faith and the world test him but in the end Eli does what god has asked of him.
This film is like an extra book of the bible if the bible were written after the apocalypse.
'The Book of Eli' is my personal favorite movie of 2010. Great movie with great storyline, acting, directing. The atmosphere reminded me Mad Max trilogy a little bit. Denzel Washington was great. Mila Kunis showed surprisingly stunning acting. Her best film to date. Gary Oldman - no comments, great as always. He was born for villain roles
when i saw this movie, the town reminded me so much of Fallout. great movie though, i loved it
