My last name is Rhodie-spelled differently. I found you through your comment on Zipster's video-stop calling him names! Look forward to watching your videos!
tis is the song "go tel aunt rhodie go aunt tell rhodie go tell aunt rhodie the old gry goose is dead.....the one shes been saveing the one shes been save the one she was save to make a fether bed the goslings are mouring the goslings are mouring the goslings are mouring because ther mothers dead the old ganders weeping the old ganders weeping the old ganders weeping because his wifes dead she died in the mill pound she died in the mill pound she died in the mill pound from standing on her head
Go tell Aunt Rhody go tell at Aunt Rhody go tell Aunt Rhody the old grey goose is dead. The one she's been saving The one she's been saving The one she's been saving to make a featherbed. She died in the mill pond she died in the mill pond she died in the mill pond while standing on her head.
Red rover... What is a rover? And why is it red? And why are people asking it to send people over? And why is it so painful? And why must we try and stop these people from coming over? And does anyone "win" the game? Why punish someone for being too rough? After all, you have to be rough in order to break through the fists! Who invented this game, a sick prison guard? Why was it allowed by adults? Why are they telling us to hurt ourselves and others and then telling us it's wrong?
I'm too lazy to read all 106 comments below, but I did research the lyrics on Google and here are the verses I keep seeing poppin' up on different pages: After the Go tell aunt Rhodey the old grey goose is dead, it says, 1. The one she's been savin' to make a feather bed 2. The old gander's weeping because his wife is dead 3. The goslins are mourning because their mother's dead 4. She died in the mill pond from standin' on her head
Sorry I didn't wait for the whole video. My computer is so overloaded it has to stop and "buffer" every few seconds. It's frustrating. I love your videos! Keep doing them please!
great video! my thoughts: go tell aunt rhodie..my aunt kate used to sing that to me at bedtime...the other 2 verses i remember go "she died with her feathers on" and "the goslings are mourning"...yeah, explains how i turned out. Red Rover up here in PA was called "Red Rover" *LOL*. Dodge ball .... i just remember a quote from the tv show WONDER YEARS (ok, probably not an EXACT quote) gym class...state sponsored terrorism. Love yinz!
I loved to play rock school! Those dodgeballs also smelled so good to me! They do not play all those games today. I am...well I'll just say ..... over 40...it is so different now! I hated dodgeball too! I just liked to bounce that ball...cool sound and cool smell! Weird i know but what a wonderful memory! Thanks for bringing back those long forgotten memories!
wow, that took me back. we had the good games. internet and cell phones are nice, but there's nothing like a neghborhood game of hide n seek, red light green light, volleyball, marbles, jax, kickball, dodgeball, mother may I, jump rope, hop scotch. wow! lol
I hated red rover as I was never picked to try and break the chain and I hated dodge ball because everyone chose to throw the ball at me. I couldn't win it seems. I often wonder what kids in 2050 or whenever will be doing.
Go tell Aunt Rhody Go Tell Aunt Rhody Go Tell Aunt Rhody The old grey goose is dead. The one that she's been savin' (3 times) To make a feather bed. She died in the millpond (3 times) From standin' on her head. The goslins are crying (3 times) Because their mammy's dead. The gander is weeping (3 times) Because his wife is dead.
You put your head down and close your eyes, then you stick you thumb from a fist, like the little comment rating thumbs, then a select few go around and push down on ONE person's thumb. Then when the selectors are done, you say "Heads-up Seven-up!" You put your head up and try to guess who pushed your thumb down. If that makes sense at all.
Go tell Aunt Rhodie Go tell Aunt Rhodie Go tell Aunt Rhodie The old gray goose is dead She died in the morning She died in the morning She died in the morning With a pain across her head Tell her it's the that she's been saving The one she's been saving The one she's been saving For her feather bed
We called that game "Red Rover." I have played those games as kids also, it's amazing they let millions of kids abuse each other with red rover and dodge ball, but I survived!
Sorry for the delay. I uploaded the video and then had to go away from my computer overnight, so I am just now getting back to approve the responses! You should see it in a few minutes!
Poor old Aunt Rhody was saving that goose to make a feather bed with..but it went and died in the mill pond and left those poor baby geese crying LOL I hated playing Duck Duck Goose. And I hated the song The Farmer in the Dell...I was always left as the Cheese!
I think kids still play those games which I think is a great thing because it teaches them to problem solve and to be imaginative. I used to play red rover and I used to LOVE Dodgeball! I wasn't very good at it but I loved it! We used to eat lunch in our gym! They would take out chairs and tables for lunch and then put them back. In high school there was a seperate theater and gym. We in elem. and middle school played heads up 7 up! When we had 20 mins or so extra of class.
My brother used to sing that song. They learned to play it on the flute-o-phone. So irritating. I LOVE duck, so does my dad :) I buy it for him as a special treat.
duck looks "dirty" to me.....I know, don't try to understand that, it makes NO sense :) I am going to get to HUG you SOON. I am giddy already. Imagine next week!

I don't understand it either, but I'm glad someone out there knows the song. :) Oh, and I liked your fowl/foul taste duck punny. I really enjoy your videos.
Maybe Aunt Rhodie needed to turn on the oven to cook the old grey goose! All of the shcools that I went to had a stage in the gym, I even went to classes on the stage while gym class was going on.
Auntie Lemonette U R very punny and funny ;o) also I never played Rock School but the other games and songs I've played... also my new girlfriend BigBertha made a response video 4 U, but I don't C it... ;o( ... Thanks 4 sharing your life and stories with us... Love yuns ;o)
Really I hated anything that involved holding hands though. I couldn't stand it. They always would put me to where I'd have to hold hands with the nastiest kids. The ones nobody else wanted to play with. Did it because they knew I wouldn't be mean to em, I even had a teacher tell me that one time. Said she appreciated me being nice to so-and-so. But OH god I hated it.
I am just a FEW years younger than you. You make PERFECT SENSE! Our childhood games and experiences were SO DIFFERENT than those of today...Thank you for causing me to think.
The one verse that made me sad was the one where her goslings were mourning for their mom. And I always assumed that the old grey goose just died of old age, and Rhodie would want to know for whatever reason. I don't know. A lot of kids' folk songs are kinda messed up!
I got a jumprope one for you! "My boyfriends name is Tony he comes from the land of bologna with 2 black toes & a freckle on his nose & that's the way the story goes. 1 day he gave me peaches 1 day he gave me pears 1 day he gave me 50 cents & kissed me on the stairs. I gave him back his peaches I gave him back his pears I gave him back his 50 cents & kicked him down the stairs!"
I don't know who Aunt Rhodie was or if she squalled when she found out the old grey goose was dead....BUT....I most certainly know one thing: I squalled when I watched my Hogs get killed today!!! (Alabama killed them)
I knew when I saw the title is was done for. I just had to watch your video. I have had that song go through my head over and over since I was a kid. How i will not be able to get it out of my head. hahaha I loved red rover, red rover.
we would take a wide board and lay it across a stack of other boards or whatever we had and one girl would get on each end of the wide board and one would jump up and when she came down the other girl would bounce up in the air and back and forth. It is a wonder we didn't break a leg.. It sure was fun back then..LIke a see saw but much more dangerous..
I don't know the aunt rhodie song or the rock school game. We did used to play red rover and dodge ball...don't remember if I was the weakest link or not LOL I played a lot of 4 square and tether ball.

I remember the games we played during grade school, mother may I; statutes; hide n seek; duck, duck, goose; and we were very happy with them. Did you ever have to learn and sing: John Jacob Jingle Heimerschmitt?? I have two years on you, so maybe by the time you came up they were obsolete! LOL
Go tell Aunt Rhody, The old gray goose is dead. The one she's been saving, To make a feather bed. The goslings are mourning, Because their mother's dead. The old gander's weeping, Because his wife is dead. She died in the mill pond, From standing on her head. Go tell Aunt Rhody, The old gray goose is dead.
I had a sweet Aunt Rhodie who loved me to pieces til I had to give her some bad news ....know what it was? Her old gray goose bottle was empty. Screw the bird.
I did a quick search and if you search "go tell aunt rhodie" in google, it'll turn up lyrics, and even an MP3 on project gutenberg, haha :D
I never looked into it (which I'll probably do now since I'm bored) but I always wondered the rest of the lyrics to the song that goes "there's a hole in the bucket dear liza dear liza"

Is Rhodie short for Rhoda?
I just looked up the lyrics, and it's very morose.
It says Aunt Rhodie was saving the goose to make a feather bed.
The next verse is about the goslings dying and crying because their mother is dead. And then the gander is weeping because his wife is dead.
Charming song to teach children.. along with most of the odd Aesop Fables.

Relax, sweetie pie, I am not going as fast as it appears! If you were looking out towards the front of the car, it wouldn't look as fast. (?maybe?)

I had a sweet Aunt Rhodie who loved me to pieces til I had to give her some bad news ....know what it was? Her old gray goose bottle was empty. Screw the bird.

up untill 10 years ago we had very little choice,we all had to sing etc,now theyre all spoilt for choice, and thats how theyre gonna stay :/
hartnell114 3 years ago
Yeah, we didn't have much of a choice in anything back then. Wasn't it nice? We just did as we were told, and had much less stress!

Was Aunt Rhodie a distant relative of Rhoda Morgenstern, maybe??? :-P

I LOVED that show. Her sister Brenda was my favorite. She should have had her own show.

Its good to know that I am not alone!

I did a quick search and if you search "go tell aunt rhodie" in google, it'll turn up lyrics, and even an MP3 on project gutenberg, haha :D
I never looked into it (which I'll probably do now since I'm bored) but I always wondered the rest of the lyrics to the song that goes "there's a hole in the bucket dear liza dear liza"
faithm 3 years ago
I don't think I've heard that till now! Short for Rhoda maybe? I don't know how they spell it though.

Me neither, I just took a guess!
