5 people who disliked this video are still in the ICU on life support, all fucked up by the intensity of Rush's musicianship. Thus always to the disdainful...
I remember as a teen watching Exit stage left in the early 80s with my friends in my playroom...we all huddled around the tv in awe!!!!....I'm 44 now and I'm still amazed...that's why I still see RUSH concerts.....timeless band!!!!
I dont know but this song amd the whole rush idea and music would even come up to be close to what it is without Geddy Lee. What a motherfucking monster he is. He is among the ten greatest bass players ever on this human kind. And on top of that. HE FUCKING SINGS. i agree he is one of those guys you just have to sit, watch, listen, and stay fucking quiet.
What a great medley that is. They truly demonstrated that they are the greatest musicians of all time. No point in challenging that statement, people. You only make fools out of yourselves.
I'm not entirely sure what show you saw (if you saw one at all, seeing as how you are apparently "too hip" to be seen at a Rush concert), but from my vantage point, I witnessed a huge range of ages from 7 years old to 60 plus.
With RUSH...if you "GET IT" nothing needs to be said....if you "Don't Get It" nothing said will help! Been Following RUSH since 1974 and NO ONE comes close....NUFF SAID! Rock On RUSH....oh, by the way....FUCK The Hall Of Fame..."they" are not worthy.
Escapa0020...Rush is the best hands down. Playing Bass is counter to the melody...what Geddy does is nothing short of unreal (not to mention, synth and foot pedals at the same time)...add two more demi-gods like Alex and Neil and you get something amazing and beyond normal.
... I am dizzy from the mass impact of that performance, I clap my hands in respect to the gods of rock that go by the names of Getty, Alex, and Neil. Their r no better musicians that can work together with such flow, and to feel comfortable with working with musicians of that much talent is such a struggle but it all seems natural to them. It is very hard to have all great musicians in a band and be able to work with them to make a good sound but it's no problem to them and it is cool how all
This makes me wish there was a video of the All The World tour (aka 2112 tour). God I wish I could go back and relive that night. Left the house at lunch so my mum wouldn't know I had the flu and a raging fever. Nothing was going to make me miss that show. Bundled up and shivering through the entire show but it was worth it.
@jbj9802 Well, technically the 2112 tour was distinct and slightly different from the All the World's a Stage tour. They toured to promote 2112 which is what's on ATWAS and then they changed things up a bit and toured to support the live album itself. There is the 40 minute proshot (in black and white) footage from the ATWAS tour from December 10, 1976 in Passaic. Not going to get much better than that.

However, the full show that's leaked has watermarks on it, the clips in the doc do not since they got the master reel.
@jbj9802 Also, there will be more clean footage from it on the upcoming Time Machine Tour dvd due later this fall. If you haven't seen any of the Passaic show and you like old Rush you should really enjoy it even with the imperfections. I don't think the whole 40 minutes is on youtube any longer but I know at least Bastille Day and 2112 are. I just haven't searched in a while. The whole set is Bastille Day, Anthem, Lakeside Park, 2112, Fly By Night, and In the Mood. Enjoy!

Getty Lee explained In Guitar Player Magazine how they structured their songs in the studio.1st by laying down the vocals, rhythm and bass tracks & mixing. When he played the sound tracks back Getty realized he not only had to sing but play the difficult bass lines in each of the songs on stage,Getty,Alex & Neal mastered every song they created note for note.Yes they are very proud Canadians.
@jeffs1000 considering there still together after 30 yrs and still selling out concerts and seeing as how everyone else has done burned off.. yeah.. they're pretty amazing..
I think it's really unfriendly of Neil @ about 3:05, not to join in with the hand waving/pointing. He's obviously not doing anything at that point and I thought Geddy and Alex were his buddies?
@Rushguitarist1 That's By-tor, the high pitched squealing is the Snow Dog. Geddy ran his old precision bass through all of Alex's pedals during recording and when he wanted the monster to growl he'd use the volume pedal.
The "fight" segment is always fun to watch. What makes it better is the fact that every live version has a unique "fight" segment (different guitar tones, different shredding notes, alternating emphasis on guitar and bass etc), so it's worth looking for all the other versions.
will be seeing rush in nashville in 5 days, can't wait. don't think this is on the list, unfortunately! wish it were and i wish they would do the FULL long version of it, like on all the world's!!! :)
The 3 jerks that hit the dislike button must be Justin Bieber, New Kids, and N Sync fans. Keep looking, Kenny G can be found on YouTube somewhere. Maybe the three of you can find a life too.
Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.
The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!
I agree except I do think that U2 grasps the depth of Rush both lyrically and musically. Alex is the king of arpeggio playing yet most people have no clue what that means. TOTALLY agree-your comment on Neil- He is the king of drums and there are few that even enter his realm. And who could say anything bad about geddy. Incredible indeed.
We saw them at the Gorge in WA on their last tour and my wife, who isn't much of a fan said it was the best concert she has ever seen!
@darke812 U2 doesn't come close musically really. They were a punk band who managed to expand. Yes the Edge is a great guitarist, but U2's rhythm section doesn't really do it like Rush can. I'm not ragging on Adam Clayton for playing straight eighths for a whole song, because it works, but it's just not even close to what Geddy can do.
To an extent yes, I would agree, but having seen U2 several times in the last 30 years I would not be so quick to dismiss their ability. Watch their POP tour DVD before passing judgement , they are hugely accomplished musicians. Iwouldnt be too hasty to put them in the same category as Mcfly!
@ecapa0020 i agree with you completely and at the same time i feel that u2 does not fit into the group you threw them into now please dont get the wrong idea i am the biggest suppoter of rush and true music/musicians out there but i feel that u2s earlier stuf had a certain i dont know something that made it good the edge is a fantastic guitarist not lifeson but stll anyway i agree completel otherwise
@ecapa0020 I say unto you for someone who has sat in front of these guys and seen them perform as artist their are GODs and then there is RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but you also described rush of yesteryear. the band they were in the 70s was warm and had character. the band they were in the 80s was cerebral and ahead of their time, very mature and polished. the band they were in the 90s was getting patterned/stale. the band they are today is dogshit. BTW i'm NOT a classic rock fan! snakes n arrows was absolute garbage, and i'm not lookin forward to clockwork angels :-\ fwiw i didnt care for roll the bones either.
@ecapa0020 I dunno. Dream Theatre does a bad-ass version of YYZ and Red Barchetta. Even Katy Perry's band nails part of Cygnus X-1 pretty hard. All it takes is practise. As for Rush, I think they played By-Tor really well at this point in their careers. Later on, on Rush in Rio, that version didn't strike as hard. Maybe there are some Rush songs that Rush doesn't like playing. They may never play all of Hemispheres again because they just don't want to.
@fendergibs Bozzio is great but maybe someday he'll use some of those hundred drums and cymbals that aren't within arm's reach with a pair of crutches duct taped to his arms. All Zappa musicians? First time anyone has ever said that.
I got this years ago on VHS and I always thought this was their best finales. When they go into the bolero section of 2112 and Geddy is just tearing up the bass reminiscent of Freewill's co-solo it's mind blowing. One of the best live sounds ever captured on tape. Man Geddy needs to bring back the Ric in stereo like that.
The GREATEST band of all time!!!! Geddy at 7:30 - Fucking incredible!!!!! Noone can touch these guys. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd: Love these guys, but they can't compete with Geddy, Alex and Neil. Intense, incredible, insane playing. Love it!!!!
@andy0273 I can get pretty damn close with my jazz bass. I run my jazz bass with an Audere Preamp in High-Z Mode (EQ set flat, both pickups) through a Boss Bass OD (Level: 12:00, Treble: 7:00, Bass: 12:00, Blend: 100% OD, Gain: 9:00) into a solid state amplifier with no tweeter/horn (EQ set flat). The sound is fat, raunchy, and rich with overtones, but not harsh.
It is so cool to see all the positive comments about these guys. So many people laughed and gave me funny looks when I said they were my favorite band back in my early years. That was then. Who's laughing now? They stand alone as the most talented, unique and enduring band ever! They are number "1" in my Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and should be at the one in Cleveland OH as well!
@TheBimmyandJimmy INDUCT RUSH INTO THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME NOW OR ELSE! We will break into the roof vents set up Neils AWESOME time machine TOUR drum set and 2 double neck guitars! AND show the world! They will wake up and say OMG! Tenacious D must have been in here? and then they now wonder why people wait outside. to see it all! YEAH!
The shit Geddy pulls off, especially during By-Tor (and his lick at 7:31) is awesome. These guys are so good it's not funny. When they are no longer it will be a dark day for many.
@TheBimmyandJimmy I've played a Rickenbacker a few times live. Pretty good bass, but it got uncomfortable with right hand placement. Once my Jazz bass was fixed and I started playing it again, I immediately noticed how much brighter it was than the Rickenbacker. Rickenbackers are great basses, but they can cumbersome if you're used to playing Fenders.
They should do an expanded version of the CD for this, and include the material that wasn't on the original live LP. Kind of like Zeppelin did with the remastered version of 'Song Remains the Same.'
@Brickdump yes but in the 2112 tour book there is an epiloge that says the citizens led by the oracles revolt against the preists suggesting that the line "we have assumed control" came from the oracle
@Digikid313 i blame that on the 2010 time machine echo brought on by sandra bullock's tsunami adopted test at the los alamos projectile funkytest, madams and monshrooms and the very very very large arry 2010... only two years left, wabbits.
I remember from the first time seeing this vid (in 86) wondering why the crowd just sits there. I guess they were just soaking it all in. Hell,I was 14 and I thought you had to stand and pump your fist in the air in order to show your appreciation. Why did it take IN THE MOOD for these people to stand?
@Chrisdrumz I never though of that! Maybe just some fair-weather, mid 80's fans. You know the one, two rows behind you who shouts "Play Tom Sawyer!" throughout the show.
@scipio337 Thats why they open with TOM SAWYER sometimes. Ya know, they wanna get it out of the way so people don't keep calling for it. Same as the Eagles opening with Hotel California.
Hey everybody rush day is coming on 2-1-12.

@fendergibs Bozzio is great but maybe someday he'll use some of those hundred drums and cymbals that aren't within arm's reach with a pair of crutches duct taped to his arms. All Zappa musicians? First time anyone has ever said that.

My chances of being a human bass player as Geddy Lee are zero...
That's why some peoples does not like this video.

3:25 - 3:49. Enough proof that Neil Peart is the best drummer ever. Period.

RIGHT LET'S STOP MESSING ABOUT!!
Does anyone else agree?

The GREATEST band of all time!!!! Geddy at 7:30 - Fucking incredible!!!!! Noone can touch these guys. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd: Love these guys, but they can't compete with Geddy, Alex and Neil. Intense, incredible, insane playing. Love it!!!!

nicklovell1982 1 year ago

God damn it, I could have bought a Rickenbacker a couple of months ago, but I waited to long and it was gone. I'm still kicking myself over it.
TheBimmyandJimmy 1 year ago
@TheBimmyandJimmy I've played a Rickenbacker a few times live. Pretty good bass, but it got uncomfortable with right hand placement. Once my Jazz bass was fixed and I started playing it again, I immediately noticed how much brighter it was than the Rickenbacker. Rickenbackers are great basses, but they can cumbersome if you're used to playing Fenders.
CorvetteCoonass 1 year ago
They should do an expanded version of the CD for this, and include the material that wasn't on the original live LP. Kind of like Zeppelin did with the remastered version of 'Song Remains the Same.'

odd, why is does the star have connected middle lines like a pentagram? Is it suggesting that the preists won (the 2112 tourbook says otherwise).
Digikid313 1 year ago
@Digikid313 ok if i'm thinking what your saying is this, the priests would have won. in the end of the song the protaganist killls him self
Brickdump 1 year ago
@Brickdump yes but in the 2112 tour book there is an epiloge that says the citizens led by the oracles revolt against the preists suggesting that the line "we have assumed control" came from the oracle
Digikid313 1 year ago
@Digikid313 i blame that on the 2010 time machine echo brought on by sandra bullock's tsunami adopted test at the los alamos projectile funkytest, madams and monshrooms and the very very very large arry 2010... only two years left, wabbits.

I remember from the first time seeing this vid (in 86) wondering why the crowd just sits there. I guess they were just soaking it all in. Hell,I was 14 and I thought you had to stand and pump your fist in the air in order to show your appreciation. Why did it take IN THE MOOD for these people to stand?
Chrisdrumz 1 year ago
@Chrisdrumz The better the musicians the more enthralled the audience. It's easy to dance around when there's not much happening on the stage.
bodgaard 1 year ago
@bodgaard Yeah,I see your point. Then again, perhaps the crowd was just a bunch of lame ass'.
Chrisdrumz 1 year ago
@Chrisdrumz I never though of that! Maybe just some fair-weather, mid 80's fans. You know the one, two rows behind you who shouts "Play Tom Sawyer!" throughout the show.
scipio337 1 year ago
@scipio337 Thats why they open with TOM SAWYER sometimes. Ya know, they wanna get it out of the way so people don't keep calling for it. Same as the Eagles opening with Hotel California.
