@catchadragon: Once in awhile, we need to take steps that have mixed consequences. You make some good points, and the underlying thing we agree about is that violence is, at best, a last resort. Having been overseas in the Middle East and elsewhere, doing things I can't talk about, I can say that the avg US politician has little or no understanding of cultures beyond our shores, no matter what they say. Being there changed my view, certainly.
What did Afghans do to deserve this. Foreign powers just encourage warlords and opium production while saying the nice things about saving women etc......Did not we / you learn from Iraq Vietnam, My Lai etc.... War does not solve problems. Diplomacy foreign policy does more.
