From my previous post. L did not expect it which is why he showed actual emotion during his death. After he faked his death, L quietly replaced the body with something else and ran off. Trying to live like a normal individual, but nine after is apparent "death" he joined the Japanese Police under the name of L Lawliet finding out that Light was dead. During one of the cases, he gets to meet Near face to face and finally reveals who he really his to his succesor and the former taskforce.

@Chick45671 ....this theory actually makes a lot of sense. And I will choose to believe it, since the fact L died is perhaps the worst thing I've ever seen. So, kudos to you for coming up with such a brilliant, believeable, not out-of-this-world theory (I've seen a few of those...) and for renewing my faith in L never dying! :D

My theory is that L made a deal with Rem, he told her everything that Light would probably do to Misa if Rem was not around. But, he told Rem he would do everything in his power to try to save Misa (which he obviously did not do, seeing her as a lost cause.) Rem agreed and instead wrote a name to help Light, most likely a name of world wide known terriost leader, whom Light wanted to get for a while. When, Watari died he had an actual heart attack from being overworked.

if L had lived, mello wouldnt have gotten involved and therefore would have survived, L would have won, he actually figured out the rest of the case, but the second he did was actually about 10 seconds after the shinigami had left, if you listen to his last words, raito (or light or kira, whatever you want to call him) was only 10 seconds ahead of L

Really interesting alternate ending, I like a lot. The parts with Light and Mello in the end especially meshed together so well it was creepy. I also loved the idea of Mello and L watching Light as he broke down like that.

Perhaps Near and Mello got involved because L was declared dead. In the anime, it is clearly stated that L will be pronounced dead if he doesn't use his computer in 24 hours, a simple task. So L doesn't use his computer for 24 hours, he's declared dead, Mello and Near enter the picture, L fakes his death to Light and the task force, then this ending is plausible.
