to add to what big boi was saying freestyle is either spontaneous rap from off the top of your head OR it is free of style also known as free verse to poets. This version of freestyle is often not structured and it doesn't necessarily hold a focal point or objective in its lyrics aka rhyme without reason.

@skaterkmak23 freestyle is all about prefference too...some people do writtens some do off the dome...there was a time when rappers would say off the dome rappers dont get credit because they have a built in reason not to be critiqued as hard because they were making it up...freestyle is a verb not a noun...so if me and you are standing in a group kicking rhymes...whether its written or not its freestyling because we arent doing anything by the books...its just spitting rhymes back and forth

I feel like if u right it down if theres a subject or not its not a freestyle... alot of artists even on their tracks talk about ramdon shit now days, so maybe back when story telling was in u could call writing random rhymes a freestyle. Since when did freestyling turn into "Imma say a written verse BUT its gonna be on a beat that is already out right now" Freestyling became hot, cuz it showed a rapper's lyrical prowess and their quick-wittedness not to just make words rhyme, but to make punchlines and jokes about the guy they were battling or a current situation. It was a measure of how good a rapper was. So some suckier rappers started doing rap's version of performance enhancing by writing for their freestyles. Suckers man
