I think it is incredibly selfish to refuse a million dollars unless you've got a really damned important reason to do so.There are no doubt folks within his immediate sphere of relations that could probably benefit from it.It is fine if he doesn't want the money for himself, but if I rejected a million dollars my mother would pissed the f' off. The asshole still lives with his mother but is selfish enough not to give something in return. Mathematically brilliant, but somewhat morally challenged.

Further on, he oppose the mathematical community, for being to money- and fameorientated, backstabbing etc. Money is not everything, and if you not understand that, you cant understand a pure mind as him.

These eggheads need to do a better job of breaking down the concept into laymans terms so that we can have an understanding of why the committee is so confident that he actually solved the problem. I feel like we're being punked. They tell us he solved it and we are supposed to believe them automatically. Its kinda like the faith concept in religion. They did ok in explaining the initial problem but never attempted to explain how Perelman solved it.

Understanding it is a different story, but the committee can't explain to you years of background mathematics these guys studied to you in a few minutes.

what I don't understand is this: Poincaré pointed out this "enigma" and also solved it by saying that the 3 dimensional sphere was the simplest form. which means! that he must have solved this problem!

now... first, if he did solve it, wouldn't there be a written proof from Poincaré's part?

and second, if 100 years ago Poincaré was able to ask him self this question, therefore understood it, why in the world we were only able to prove this "theory" after 100 years?!

Poincare's assertion that the sphere was the simplest form was only a best guess, a "conjecture." It took almost a hundred years for somone to actually prove the conjecture correct.

As for Perelman rejecting the prize, his reason is simple but pregnant with meaning. He said that he dont like to glorify mathematics and be an inspiration to other people who would get nothing but endless boredom in mathematics (or something to that effect). Contd...

The Panel of mathematicians who were to certify that Perelman indeed 'solved' the problem were ambivalent..somehow they 'believe' that he did solve it.

But deep down Perelman spent the great deal of his life and energy to prove as odious as Poncare Conjecture.

He may just say that it's a futile exercise but who knows what others mathematicians/scientists are going to do with that proof? Life is weird!
