The comments regarding past musicians to current generation musicians always gets interesting. I can only say that I'm 47 and have been a music fanatic for over 30 years. I've listened to the best and in my opinion John belongs in the elite class of guitarists. Most of the guys I've heard that are better are Jazz/fusion virtuosos like Alan Holdsworth. That genre has some obscenely good musicians. John is very gifted.
@SterlingRe Ok, so there are fantasy football leagues, fantasy baseball leagues. How about a fantasy triple bill concert? I would like to see John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa and then a third act of the two of them jamming together. That would be EPIC!
i personally dont give a fuck about what anyone says about john mayer because 1) you cant take the feeling that he puts into his playing from another guitarist. 2) he can play better than anybody thats left a fucking comment on here. "F33BS" you can go fuck yourself. and nobody gives a damn if youve been playing for 9 years. ive been playing for 15 big deal.
Anybody who wants to diss John Mayer, go on ahead. He's already more successful than any of you d-bags here. He's an amazing songwriter and awesome guitarist. Of course he'll never be like Hendrix or Clapton, but that's totally unfair to judge him like that. All the innovation and influence of this century has already been taken unless you want to sound like crap. He's a highly skilled well-rounded guitar player and you just can't deal with that because your jealous. Grow up
Very true my friend. but I always seem to see people say how "blah blah nothing like hendrix or clapton". That's because they are the old generation. Yeah, a lot of people have gone on board saying Jack White is like our Dylan, Frusciante being alike to our Waters, Cobain being alike to Angus.
While I never like drawing conclusions between different eras there is some similarity, Dylan/Whites' running on and stream of conscience lyrics, Frusciantes' simple but powerful guitar and lyrics that make you think differently, and Cobain influencing a lot of 'simple' rock to come out again just like Angus.
dude just because you've played guitar for 9 years does not give you more of a valid opinion than anyone else. an opinion is an opinion. your fucking opinion can't be put on a fucking pedastool just because you're more "experienced"

okay, a little background on me. i've been playing guitar for nine years and teach guitar professionally. this makes my opinions worth more than yours.
hendrix didn't revolutionize shit. it was his image and posturing that gave him such weight with the hippies. the fact that he was black helped a lot too. when you get down to it and really listen to his riffs, its all stuff that'd been played 30 years before except faster, sloppier, and drenched in effects. and of course ive heard hendrix et al
how long uve been playing for is irrelevant. also teaching other people guitar usually means uve failed urself. this makes urs opinions worthless. as for the hendrix part. thats typical of someone that overates there own ability. denying his ability and acting like u know something everyone else doesnt. sloppier and drenched in effects? are you really that ignorant. do some research and then fuck off u condescending, contemptible prick
so you played guitar for 9 years on your couch. and i dont think someone who teaches guitar professionally would be such a cocky arrogant person. in my OPINION, you can suck your moms dick.
He's not so good. I don't get what the deal is. He's pretty, I guess. But he ain't no blues master. BB King, John Lee Hooker and Robert Cray, Jones Beach, summer '91, that was some playing!!!!
i'm not a mayer fan, but where do you think clapton/SRV got their licks? from other people. all blues artists are equally derivative. i'd go so far as to say all guitarists in general are equally derivative. by your (implied) logic there hasn't been an original guitarist since the blues started.
given, this guy is a pussy and his licks are all rehash. not even an attempt at originality.
Good point. BUT, SRV and Clapton developed their own styles. SRV's style is absolutely untouchable. There will never be someone who can play like Stevie. Clapton less so.
But Mayer just kind of rides on their coattails and we have to call him a blues musician just because he's collaborated with other well known bluesmen.
"given, this guy is a pussy and his licks are all rehash. not even an attempt at originality. "
F33bs: funny that you mention SRV because he is probably the most derivative and generic of all recent considerably famous bluesmen. he has the air of a guy who sat down and learned EVERY t-bone, albert king, hendrix, clapton, etc, lick there ever was and put slight variations on all of them. again, nothing wrong with this, i love the blues personally, its the root for everything. blues "styles" are still actually very slight deviations on what came before.
What? SRV most generic?! Please stop and think about what you are writing. SRV did indeed learn from all those guys but he packaged it in a way that was uniquely Stevie. You can't deny that. Look up Texas Flood on here and find the El Mocambo performance. That's not generic, and frankly it's a giant insult to many blues fans to say so.
When I say "style" I mean personal aesthetic and playing style. I don't mean the licks they play. SRV DEFINITELY had his own style.
But Clapton and Hendrix re-invented guitar playing in general. They successfully blended psychedelic rock of the 60's n 70's with blues. Clapton and Hendrix were some of the first to get on stage and do 20 mins straight of guitar work, going crazy trippin on acid n makin the crowd go wild. Mayer will never do that because his fan base is made up of teenage girls and he's highly overrated.John Frusciante is also 100x the guitarist Mayer is and so is jack white.
Clapton and Hendrix were among a group of musicians that revolutionized guitar playing. they were some of the firsts to use effects like the wah wah, delay, reverb, fuzz and feedback which is used like crazy nowadays.Jimmy Page was another. And this isn't changing showmanship it's changing the way the instrument is used, before this guitar was part of the rhythm section and they made it the center of the show.
haha wow, so many people on here just trash musicians. number one I don't see any of you making your own music being a singer and song writer..Mayer dropped out of school because he wasn't learning anything. that tells you a little about him.. for all you haters out there..your just jealous you can't do it and well your a hater so you need someone to hate on
To all you DUMB ASSES that are hating on anything john mayer does......I dont see your face all over television or in magazines...or dating jessica simpson......enough said....he's doing something right
most of you are retarded, your logic is that john mayer isn't THE best guitar player in all of history.. so he sucks. With that logic there's only one good musician in the world. And this isn't even near his best solo. Watch Any Given Thursday, his soundstage performance, austin city limits, then your opinion will matter at least a little bit. One thing is he tries to play something a little different at each show, so every show may not be an AMAZING solo.
obviously he changes it up. the better guitar players do that all the time. they improvise which he isn't amazing at, all his live solos sound the same. he probably has an automatic set of pentatonic licks and/or bends that he always uses and he adds notes in between. bo honest, hes didn't get famous for being a good guitar player, he got famous for being a good popstar.
id like to see you play his stuff on acoustic like he does..! im a musician too .. and seeing someone transfer a song on the acoustic and play it alone and still making it sound great. is something pretty good!
man oh man some people are idiots I would love to see this at a high school talent show.....I would sign the kid who did it as well......and whoever said he's just playing scales and to do more is an idiot he plays the same scale because he needs to stay in that key and that position where he was playing take theory for guitar before you people talk seriously....all you learn is scales and stop trashing john mayer please.....and whoever dissed Clapton is a fucking moron
same old thing been done one million times before...just because its not heavy and old people and preppy girls can sit thru the solo and he plays it slow with emotion hes the best guitar player? a 2 year old can play with emotion if he sits on teh same scale the whole song....do something different show me some actual techniques not just scales
This solo os lame,i could see the same thing at a high school talent show, sorry girls if i offend you but this is just a basic solo with little effect,or technique
I may be a prick, but am not stupid, sorry that i have taste in music and am not on the john mayer wagon,oh and bluesboy, did you take a class and learn that on your first day, maybe if he put in a little effect or something to make it sound good i would agree with you,and Derek Trucks was jamming like that in HS when he was on stage with the Allman Bros.....
and speaking of DMB,they are headlining the Live Earth show at GS this summer, where mayer is also playing, and i know Dave is lucky to have a much more tallented rythm section the JMso that helps him outand i am not trashing mayer, just saying he is over rated, and in my 12/06 issue of rolling stones greates of all time i see warren haynes at # 3,oh yeahandbetts at 7,D allman at 9 so 3 allman brother members in the top 10, you really cant trash that
1 more time then i'mdone. do my research? no thanx man, i can form n opinion on my own. i dont need rollin stones to make one for me. they dont impress me and nothing some mag says is gona change that. it all a matter of opinion, i dont think he's great but neither is he bad enough for me to go through his vids and say he sux, lighten up. everyones opinion is diff n just cause theyre not the same as yours doesnt make them crazy nor wrong as u like to believe
alright if you are going to talk about making money, look what dmb does every year, and then how much of it they donate to charity...and everyone on here always has to bring up clapton,is he the final word on who is great or not. And to say 2 members from the Allman brothers havnt done anything that impresses you....you need to do your research
All I keep hearing is how awesome mayer is with his blues playing but all the SHIT i hear of his on the RADIO is POP-so if we are coparing his style of "blues" Betts,Haynes,D.Allman, all floor jon Mayer,i play guitar, and i know alot about itand i have not seen him do anything that really impresses me,and so what if clapton says he is going to be one of the best,John madden said that about Drew Bledsoe when he was a rookie and he never did anything(just an off the topic comparison)
c'mon man. my boy plays guitar too. that doesnt mean a damn thing. "i play guitar and i know alot about it" yet he's a famous millionaire getting praises from eric "friggin" clapton and your just a guy on youtube going through all his vids trashing him. stop embarrasing yourself dude. the guy can play. period. and i grew up with guitars and in my opinion betts and haynes have never done anything that really impresses me. nor has zak wilde.
SOrry its the truth , i am sure most of you are A)female..........B)under19.........C) couldnt name a guitarist that is over 30 years old, put him next to,Zak Wilde, for those of you that dont know he plays for ozzy and he'd look like shit, any of the allman brothers, how many guitar greats has he shared a stage with, you know how dave matthews has played with Santane,Warren Haynes,Dicky Betts,Neil Young,Clapton, when you can put that on your resume then maybe you can have a little credit.....
u should know u cant compare apples and oranges. it's like people who compare santana n hendrix."but they both play guitar" but it's not the same thing. hendrix n prince. maybe. i'll tell u what, put your zak wilde against tim reynolds and see who looks like shit then. or neil young against santana? i'm gonna believe eric clapton knows a little more about playing blues than you do and if he says john mayer is one of the best........
Even though i dont like Mayer he isa good guitarist, thats all,to say one of the best of all time is just your crazy obsession with him, or even this era,put him next to Tim Reynolds, Dave Matthews,Dicky Betts,Warren Haynes, son and so on and he wouldnt even know where he was.....
I still tend to light a candle everytime I listen to all of the solos performed by Duane Allman, but I will also give John Mayer his due. He is a very talented composer, and a fantastic guitarist (how can anyone listen to acoustic Neon and doubt that?) and I am glad his music is bringing blues back into the music scene. He is good now, I think he will be great in time.
3.) Don't compare Mayer to SRV? Does anyone say BB King sucks compared to Clapton, or Page sucks compared to Hendrix...if everyone sounded the same music would be boring. 4.) Don't compare Trucks to Mayer...way different styles. I saw Mayer and Bonamassa in concert...let's put it this way, Mayer is amazing, but Bonamassa blew him away. I think it's because Mayer is too commercialized, while Bonamassa literally played himself to exhaustion...I'd stand Bonamassa up to SRV any day!
1.) Both Eric Clapton and Buddy guy said that John Mayer is one of the best young up-coming blues players around...takes one to know one.
2.) His live performances are much different than his studio work. If anyone's has seen him live in concert, or listened to the Trio album, they would respect him for being one of the top guitarists/writers out there.
John Mayer is simply amazing but even he said on my SRV and Double Trouble Montruex DVD he can only play Stevies shit for 20 seconds and his hand feels like its going to fall off
John is the best guitar player in 40 years and he's already making his Legendary mark in music history. HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE PUREST GUITAR GENIUS AND VOCALIST OF OUR TIME! please if you have comments reply
flyingv63, that's because SRV = SRV, and Mayer = Mayer. I like Mayer's playing, he's really good, alhtough I'm not a fan, I can admit this. But SRV gave a certain flair to his songs, different from Mayer's, that's why some people prefer SRV over Mayer.
john mayer... is indescribable. i mean, seriously people, right now he is respected by clapton, santana, and bunches more legends. in 20-30 years, he will be the best there ever was. and im buckling up for the ride.
Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Schofield... much better more bluesier. Having said that, Mayer has got skills like no other in the POP music plus he plays Stevie Licks have to give him props for that.
And just so you know, a great musician isn't all about the theory and technique. It's about feeling. There are just too many shredders in this place; we need more Mayers.
the fact that he starts jumping is pretty much amazing. i was at this show and i'm about to add my entire gravity video... this was by far one of the best songs he played.
John is this generations hendrix clapton srv who the fuck ever u want him to be u dumb asses would recognize true tallent gift and pure love if it hit at in sixth gear ... and speaking of DMB,they are headlining the Live Earth show at GS this summer, where mayer is also playing, and i know Dave is lucky to have a much more tallented rythm section the JMso that helps him outand i am not trashing mayer, just saying he is over rated, and in my 12/06 issue of rolling stones greates of all time i see warren haynes at # 3,oh yeahandbetts at 7,D allman at 9 so 3 allman brother members in the top 10, you really cant trash that
joesites 4 years ago
1 more time then i'mdone. do my research? no thanx man, i can form n opinion on my own. i dont need rollin stones to make one for me. they dont impress me and nothing some mag says is gona change that. it all a matter of opinion, i dont think he's great but neither is he bad enough for me to go through his vids and say he sux, lighten up. everyones opinion is diff n just cause theyre not the same as yours doesnt make them crazy nor wrong as u like to believe
rcarballo1 4 years ago
alright if you are going to talk about making money, look what dmb does every year, and then how much of it they donate to charity...and everyone on here always has to bring up clapton,is he the final word on who is great or not. And to say 2 members from the Allman brothers havnt done anything that impresses you....you need to do your research
joesites 4 years ago
All I keep hearing is how awesome mayer is with his blues playing but all the SHIT i hear of his on the RADIO is POP-so if we are coparing his style of "blues" Betts,Haynes,D.Allman, all floor jon Mayer,i play guitar, and i know alot about itand i have not seen him do anything that really impresses me,and so what if clapton says he is going to be one of the best,John madden said that about Drew Bledsoe when he was a rookie and he never did anything(just an off the topic comparison)
joesites 4 years ago
c'mon man. my boy plays guitar too. that doesnt mean a damn thing. "i play guitar and i know alot about it" yet he's a famous millionaire getting praises from eric "friggin" clapton and your just a guy on youtube going through all his vids trashing him. stop embarrasing yourself dude. the guy can play. period. and i grew up with guitars and in my opinion betts and haynes have never done anything that really impresses me. nor has zak wilde.
rcarballo1 4 years ago 2
SOrry its the truth , i am sure most of you are A)female..........B)under19.........C) couldnt name a guitarist that is over 30 years old, put him next to,Zak Wilde, for those of you that dont know he plays for ozzy and he'd look like shit, any of the allman brothers, how many guitar greats has he shared a stage with, you know how dave matthews has played with Santane,Warren Haynes,Dicky Betts,Neil Young,Clapton, when you can put that on your resume then maybe you can have a little credit.....
joesites 4 years ago
u should know u cant compare apples and oranges. it's like people who compare santana n hendrix."but they both play guitar" but it's not the same thing. hendrix n prince. maybe. i'll tell u what, put your zak wilde against tim reynolds and see who looks like shit then. or neil young against santana? i'm gonna believe eric clapton knows a little more about playing blues than you do and if he says john mayer is one of the best........
rcarballo1 4 years ago

He is good now, I think he will be great in time.

did you know that john mayer could have been in metallica for real

this solo is a great example of mayer's talent.

I think it's because Mayer is too commercialized, while Bonamassa literally played himself to exhaustion...I'd stand Bonamassa up to SRV any day!

ok shut up casue ur a retard who dont know shit.
jmhendrix101 4 years ago
JB is definitely better than Mayer. I saw a Bonamassa concert last year, best show I've ever seen.

1.) Both Eric Clapton and Buddy guy said that John Mayer is one of the best young up-coming blues players around...takes one to know one.
2.) His live performances are much different than his studio work. If anyone's has seen him live in concert, or listened to the Trio album, they would respect him for being one of the top guitarists/writers out there.
dero0808 4 years ago
John Mayer is simply amazing but even he said on my SRV and Double Trouble Montruex DVD he can only play Stevies shit for 20 seconds and his hand feels like its going to fall off

flyingv63, that's because SRV = SRV, and Mayer = Mayer. I like Mayer's playing, he's really good, alhtough I'm not a fan, I can admit this. But SRV gave a certain flair to his songs, different from Mayer's, that's why some people prefer SRV over Mayer.
navar0xnl 4 years ago
if any of you haters heard SRV play the exact same solo, you would praise it and accept it as the gospel. you're such hypocrites.
flyingv63 4 years ago
yeah that is true...but c'mon it is john mayer...i just don't like what he is about and his blues playing
hendrixistheking 4 years ago
umm.. iownallwoot, i think you have the solo confused with the background vocals.
JohnMayer07 4 years ago
john mayer... is indescribable. i mean, seriously people, right now he is respected by clapton, santana, and bunches more legends. in 20-30 years, he will be the best there ever was. and im buckling up for the ride.
JohnMayer07 4 years ago
Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Schofield... much better more bluesier. Having said that, Mayer has got skills like no other in the POP music plus he plays Stevie Licks have to give him props for that.

John Mayer is a great musician... but this isn't really that amazing.
xquisites0ul 5 years ago
To each his own. But it's very, very, VERY different if you're watching it live, as compared to you sitting at home watching this on your snazzy LCD.
Mo0miE 5 years ago
And just so you know, a great musician isn't all about the theory and technique. It's about feeling. There are just too many shredders in this place; we need more Mayers.
Mo0miE 5 years ago
agreed...this is one of the worst solos i've heard.
ever.
on anything.
