  • lol america has some bad quality planes, explode when go too fast.

  • Perhaps flutter?

  • I should also mentioned that both men were covered in burns when recovered in the RHIB boat but were able to walk on their own once taken onboard our ship. They were both obviously in shock too.

  • I was onboard the JPJ during that F-14 incident and actually near the camera man that filmed this video. My friend was one of the SAR swimmers. I remember that both the pilot and RIO (I was a black shoe so correct my terminology by all means) were recovered from this. We had plane guard that day too if memory serves me correctly. I heard rumor that this pilot later lost his life in another accident.

  • the F14 was shot. there some shoots against the airplane before the explosion.

  • And the accident was once again [You guessed it] Compressor stall related, The F-14A was a bad ass toy with some real bad ass problems.... RIP john stacey bates.

  • And lastly this pilot is now sadly dead.. He died while doing a 'clear the path' takeoff exercise, For those who dont know what this is its a full burner takeoff with an aggresive almost straight up departure. Stacy's aircraft was seen going almost vertical through the clouds then silently reappearing back through them, Narrowly avoiding an overpass but hitting a house i believe... If i recall correctly there was at least one civillian death.

  • Though in this case the aicraft was supersonic, However the change in atmospheric pressure brought on by the pilots sudden right bank and subsequent break out was a good recipe for yet another compressor stall related problem... An F-14A went down over a carrier in 1990 i belive almost exactly the same way, [The accident was recorded by the Discovery channel while doing a documentary]

  • I read through the comments and almost everyone was wrong so i will clear things up.. Both the pilot and RIO survived the crash.. It was an F-14A not D, And although never conclusivly proven the crash was on at least some account pilot error, Due to the sepperation of the engines compressor stalls were a problem especially on the F-14A, Kara Hultgreen was killed due to a compresser stall while yawing at low speed on carrier approach, Low speed yawing was a major no no with the F-14,

  • haha buga your the man

  • who's the fuckhead who yelled YEAHHH when it exploded...???

  • @232K7 It was me! Sorry, I thought it was the enemy's plane.

  • When i put it on full screen between :20 and :28 you can barely see parachutes

  • NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- The pilot of the Navy fighter jet that crashed and killed him and four other people Monday was at the controls of another plane that went down in April.

Lieutenant Commander John Stacy Bates, 33, was flying the F-14 fighter jet last year that crashed at sea, said a naval spokesman at the Mirimar Naval Air Station near San Diego, where Bates was based. Monday's crash in a Nashville neighborhood also killed a crew member and three residents.

  • In the April incident, Bates was on maneuvers involving the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln when he lost control of his F-14 and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. He and the radar intercept officer ejected. The aircraft was lost. After a review, Bates was recommended fully qualified for return to flight status, said Commander Gregg Hartung, a Navy spokesman.

  • ugh why flagged

  • I understand people not reading comments but you can hear clearly in the movie clip: "two parachutes!".

Prandtl singularity is not seen at supersonic speed, so the vapour means jet was subsonic and you woulkd hear it if it went supersonic afterwards.

  • why is this video flagged???

  • ok the plane broke the sound barrier got sonic shock it starts to shake the pilots ejected when they felt it a trained pilot knows whats going on tthe plane blew up laster the helicopters rescued them they were fine

  • The pilot was killed in another accident some months later:

Killed besides Commander Bates, 33, Tenn., was the jet's radar operator, Lieut. Graham Alden Higgins, 28, Three civilians were also killed when the plane hit a house. They were Elmer Newsom, 66; his wife, Ada, 63, and a friend, Ewing T. Wair, 53.

"One guy was just sitting on his couch," James Dean, a firefighter, told The Associated Press. "He never had a chance. They were all just sitting where they were."

  • possibly an overheated optical refractory capacitator aparatus

  • actually I think the flux capasitor was overheating, thats what did it.

  • hope the pilot got out in time

  • hey ooosanteooo you can eject at super sonic speeds how do you think they save so many lives from badly damaged fighters

  • why tf is is this innapropriape for minors???/

  • @yrulaughing418 : Because we were all cursing when it happened. The F word was used repeatedly.

  • At those speed levels every sharp move would result in sharp reduces doing a salto may bring it sub and or trans sonic, if u are lucky u wont die on whiplash or get paralyzed for life

  • Do some research before posting stupid comments.

  • you can to eject at supersonic speed it would be very fuckin terrifing flying through the air at 1200 kias but it is possible

  • What dumbass would flag this.

  • Whats that is K-18/no minors?

  • so if the fly-by was authorized, did the pilot get in any trouble...i mean it was a 40 million dollar plane

  • he prolly died >>

  • actualy, nvrm what i said last time.. i forgot the f-16 would kill the j10.. forgot they have jammer

  • u.s. planes yes. the my opinion is the f14.. but out of all... im sure the chinese j-10 would woop the f14

  • Hey. For those of you who were wondering, the pilots survived and were safely recovered 56 miles from the carrier. Pretty amazing how they survived such a crash at these speeds.

  • did they ejected ?

  • ..at 00:32 you can also hear the crew aboard the boat shouting "two parachutes..two parachutes.."

  • even with this i think F-14 is the best fighter.

  • Why was this flagged?

  • if you see closely, there was a cloud ring around the aircraft at 00:17. thats when the aircraft hit super sonic speed. when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier that ring forms. just to tell those who did'nt know that

  • who flagged this

  • shame tom cruise wasn't on that one!

  • lol

  • this video was on the military channel they did survive it was and engine explodeing and the pilots did get out safely

  • Both air crew from a U.S. Navy F-14A have been safely recovered following a crash in the Pacific Ocean 800 miles west of Guam on 20 September 1995. The two aviators were safely recovered by a USS John Paul Jones' (DDG 53) small boat shortly after their aircraft crashed in the water approximately 56 miles from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

  • you were right that they survived...but u have the wrong carrier...its the carl vinson i believe...discovery channel had some old show that followed the crew...and they were on board when this happened

  • ahh shit...scratch that...wrong vid...my bad lol

  • If you listen to the sailor's they are shouting "two parachutes." Meaning they saw two chutes meaning the guys ejected.

  • hey did the pilots survived

  • no offence but be realistic. would you survive an explosion like that?

  • They did survive...

  • uh hu =/

  • Dragon,

we are looking from behind the plane. The explotion is big, but it´s behind the pilots. Yes, they survived.

  • Anyone up for alittle bird?

  • It's a partz of a movie by the Discovery Chanel, which is about Aircraft carriers. The plane was a F14D SuperTomcat, and the accident wasn't because the supersonic speed. It was a bird, like most of the cases.... And the pilot and RIO was ejected and survived. (In the full movie, they gave interview RIGHT AFTER the medical control). The blast wasn't the blast of the whole plane, just one of the engines exploded.

  • MaverickM1,

"It was a bird, like most of the cases...."

Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-412 and 414 engines suffered from compressor stalls and fan blade losses.

The F-14 also suffered from flame outs during air combat manoeuvres. At different angles of attack.

These engines were resticted to use 74% of their full power because of these problems.

Many F-14's have crashed because of these problems.

One of 2 reasons to retire the F-14's.

  • frankyspeaker,

I do believe that those problems with both "compressor stalls" and "fan blade losses", only applied to the F14A-model (with TF30 engine), and were remedied with the newer F14A+/F14B and F14D- models (with better engines)

  • F14Ds,

The General Electric F110-400 engines made it

a saver plane indeed. But why wait so long with using other engines. So many F-14's crashed because of the P&W engines.

  • frankyspeaker,

    I agree.

Until the end, in 2006, or allmost so, there where a mixture of A and B and D models. They began, as far as I know, to phase out the A-model first. But that was, I believe, only when they had began the prosess of retireing the F-14. So the A-model flew until the end. And I believe they where in greater numbers than the latter models to.

  • that isn't the same accident on the documentary this accident is different you can tell by the explosion.

May the pilots soles rest in peace. :(

  • at 00:17 you can see the sonic boom.

  • Did the pilots die?

  • When a fighter jet explodes, theres nothing left. First the engine bloes, then the spare fuel, then the weapons. Shrapnel is blowen on a huge sphere around the blast area. If the pilot survived the blast (which I doubt he did) the flaming shards of steel would shred him in the air. IF he survived that, the fall into the freezing water would kill him. I'm afraid he had no chance. Pilots bail out BEFORE their hit. Once theyre hit, they usually die before they know it. :(

  • I know, but may be it wasn't a "complete" explosion. I mean, it may exploed just one of the engines, and the pilot had time to eject, but now that I see it again, y really think he probably died =/

  • Poor guy.

  • No, you can see a documentary of this flight here at YouTube by looking for "F-14 transonic flyby and mishap"

  • You all silly yank comment posting f*cks,

Stop goin at each other and target the source of the problem, if you dont get understand.

go and sit in a log cabin with aunt mae and uncle rhys

    until its all over

    delinquinets

  • good thing they survived

mechanical failures are the bane of all people in the world.

  • jajajajaja

  • why is it that every thing on utube is FAKE to sum idiots ?

  • if its fake why did the pilots eject out of a 30 million dollar plane

  • it wouldn't matter if it was a billion dollar plane

there always replaceable but a life isn't ok.

  • yeah, my wrong, i agree.

  • haha...ur a dumbass...its not fake...ive seen this on tv and they interviewed the pilots too

  • they lived?

  • I made a tribute video for LT Kevin Davis of the Blue Angels. please look at my photo montage for him in my video section and leave a comment if you choose. thank you

  • republicans r stupid

  • Is it common for aircraft to implode like this on breaking the sound barrier or its because it hung around PG singularity.

  • The cloud of vapor coming off the aircraft is called a Prandtl-Glauert Singularity, and is normal. Thanks to ncalvin86 for remindig me of the name of the phenomenon

  • We hear all this about Bush being dumb and that he would be confused by a math test, however, somehow he managed to dupe all of the senators into voting to authorize War. What is it. Is he smart or dumb. Oh yeah, he may not be as capable as others at public speaking, and he makes mistakes sometimes when he does speak, but does that make him stupid? Some people think so, and that makes me question if those people aren't stupid instead.

  • omg you did vote for bush... you should be sent to area 51

  • omg you belong in area 51 for voting for Bush........ And I thought libs were smart enough to come up with smart responses, not supid nonsense. These idiotic emotional responses, you belong in a mental institution......your like hitler....you should be sent to area 51...., these idiotic responses show us the true intelligence, or lack of intelligence of the people on the other side of the isle.

  • dude just shut the fuck up either you have a disability or you dont know shit about area 51 THEY DONT KEEP PEOPLE THERE and hitler you might not know what the hell happened then-your the hitler anyway seeing that you have no feelings-they guy eithere died or almost did

  • Boyracer, you need to scroll down and read the post by tsubasapt. I was replying to what he posted. He said that I belonged in area 51 because he assumed that I voted for Bush. In my post, I was reffering to the idiotic responses that people like him tend to post like, "you belong in area 51" or "your like hitler" or "your a fascist" and on and on. I was making fun of how the libs tend to post idiotic responses.

  • and besides, I do have feelings on the matter. I do not want any military member to lose his life, nor do I want any military aircraft to go down. I was a F-15 crew chief in the air force and am in the process of joining the army national guard, where I will deploy early next year to Iraq.

  • It's not HIM.... for instance, u have a PC.. it is dumb, but when u press buttons u make it do stuff. U can have a cat, dumb, and train it (with patience) to do stuff..

  • yea Bush is really intelligent, let's invade a country that didn't attack us. If u really think he's got brains just type BUSH and you'll see hundreds of vids showing how stupid he is and all the shit that comes out of his mouth

  • Bush is a good leader! I can't stop laughing.

  • Looks like his injectors overloaded, happens due to the stress of dropping into and out of sonic flight. Either go sonic or don't, very bad idea to try and hang around the barrier.

  • costadelboy go fuck urself. then hang urself. thx

  • ha ha ha what a typical american showin off then gets his just deserts

  • From ejection-history dot org: Engine exploded during high‑speed fly‑by of USS John Paul Jones (F-14 ; VF-213 Miramar from USS Abraham Lincoln). Pilot ejected - burns to upper body, WSO ejected - burns to upperbody.

  • WIld video. 2 things to remember though. The F-14 for all it's reputation was a cast iron bitch to maintain(hence one of the reasons for it's decomm last year) and 2: The plane is not breaking the sound barrier but a compressability phenomenon in which the airflow over the wings and other control surfaces compress so much as to create a vapor .You can see this occuring in a number of plane videos where high G maneuvers are being performed at low speed

  • It was going at the speed of sound, the cone shaped area of fog is a transonic pressure wave. As NASA calls it, maximum dynamic stress.

  • bullshit! he IS breaking the sound barrier thats why the damn airplane is PAST the camera before there is ANY SOUND. CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU - DUMBASS!

  • Yes you are correct about the vapors forming around certain areas of a plane, but a shock wave does form around jets when they go supersonic.

  • golacollect, go and enjoy your Mrs. Calmy-Rey. Keep of this pages.

  • wodanowitz, go back to school. Learn English. It's a great language.

What you are speaking is "cockshit".

  • hi, why its explode?

  • I'm also curios ...

It's the second one i see today:

-find "F-14 transonic flyby and mishap, CVN-70 Carl Vinson"

This one is very similar but plane exploded very fast after 1st fire ...

Oh and this movie is from '95 so it's very but the link i've posted seems to be quite 'new', and strange is this happened again ...

  • Hm wtf ?

    i've clicked 'reply' on juanko91's post ...

Anyway sorry for mistakes, it's my 2nd post on youtube ... and why the hell isn't here any 'edit' thing ?

  • O stop your bitchin and get on with it

  • 2 parachutes!

  • Animes your a complete jackass to think this pilot tried to turn his jet ON FUCKING PUPOSE from this video. The noob bullshitter would be you. You didn't make shit.

  • The cloud of vapor coming off the aircraft is called a Prandtl-Glauert Singularity, and is normal. The shock wave generated by the compression of the fluid near the source of the disturbance is adiabatic. Increase of pressure raises the dewpoint of the vapor at a higher rate than the increase of heat. Once those two increases intersect, the cloud of vapor forms. The cloud surrounding a nuclear blast is the same phenomenon, as is the vapor cloud that forms at the tip of a cracked whip.

  • Ejection seats are cabable of woorking at speeds up to mach 3 actually. The ones in the F14A are rated up to mach 1.4 I think.

  • Bush being friend with his buddys from oil companies and military industries.. Why did e make that war ? Why did you fucking go there ? why ? To erradicate a dictator ? Well that is not legal. Dictatorship is bad, but you need a reason for a war. Your reason was oil, morons. Not the sake of the people there (look at how many died because of that war). Murderers!

  • Dummschwätzer

  • How dare you insult us, you son of a bitch! Look at how many of our innocent people died in 9/11! HOW ABOUT US, YOU IDIOT?! The extremists murder their own people, they run over their own babies in the street! And you say that this war is over freaking oil?! You're a stupid foreign bastard! Get some information before you go out judging, for you dishonor us and our dead, scumbag!

  • dude, get ur facts right, 9/11 and the war in the gulf (ie the one over oil) are different situations. and he wasnt dishonouring ur dead, just ur idiotic leader.

  • Bush is anything but an idiot. He is just a good leader who stands tall (unlike other cowards) so that ordinary anti-war cowards love to criticize him. I'd love to see these anti-war and anti-Bush nuts stand as Human Shields in a real war. Maybe their actions would then speak louder than words for once.

  • why would I, as an 'anti-Bush nut' want to stand as a human shield in war...ill just ask Bush to compete in a maths test with me..that'll confuse him.

  • ok the next time you're talking about "your dead", remember that 20 times as many civilians have now died in Iraq.

Just remember that. 20 times as many.

  • Greenpeace and anti-war movement's exagerated figures as usual. And you think ordinary people don't care? Its the STUPID ISLAMIC SUICIDE BOMBERS courtesy of IRAN AND SYRIA for the huge death toll in Iraq. Can you see these two Regimes wanting to protect human life? NOT!

  • Hundreds of thousands. 700.000 at least.

  • And as we all know, noone in the US does this. Ever.

  • Cut Kosminen some slack. It's obvious that this is a typical Liberal/Socialist moron that can't know any better.

  • Oh well you would have preferred an Iraqi Kuwait led by Saddam. And you would love to be buying 'Saddam Oil' after he took over Saudi Arabia. He was going to do it too, even in 2003. You ignorant person go look for some real info instead of the ANSWER soicalist communist anti war crap you feed your brain everyday. I guess Dictators oil is bad, but US and Bush oil is so evil we have to rid the world of it......

  • Well maybe if you hadn't funded Saddam for so long he wouldn't have had the resources to do it so easily.

  • This is admitting that the oil is the cause for the invasion of a sovereign state. In simple words "theft". You like wars do you? Ever been in one? Ever had your own body disabled, or your loved ones killed because of politicians and speculants? If not, you have a few lessons to learn.

  • What happened?

    This isn't at no airshow.

  • who the fuck flagged this? and it didnt explode....i was at this air show and saw the plane come back around

  • what are u retarded it clearly exploded and this isnt at a fricking air show look in the video there is no land in sight and y would they be yelling 2 parachutes if they were still in it?

  • Yeah, as the title says at the beginning of movie "From the USS John Paul Jones"... AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER!

The only way the pilots would have survived is if they were able to go subsonic before ejecting. Ejector seats don't work past mach 1.0

  • u may be right about the pilots surviving but this is not an airshow.. ur pointing out that its an aircraft carrier and that has nothing to do with air shows

  • Any idea why that is? I know that a man broke supersonic speeds while parachuting from the upper-atmosphere.

  • USS John Paul Jones is a Destroyer.

  • Uh, the JPJ is not a CV. She is an Arleigh Burke class DDG. Even without knowing the name of the ship, I can tell you that the camera angle shows you the stack of a Burke class DDG.

  • i never head of this. The mig 25 ejects at 2.8 mach

  • SORRY I WAS TALKING ABOUT SOME ONE ELSE

  • UCAVs will make all this human operated crap redundant soon anywayz pulling ridiculous g's, yet to see the russian models incubusslayer?

  • haha thats true actually!

  • Why is it these kind of videos always end up into some kind of political/racist hatred comments?! Comment about the video... I don't see how Americans being stupid etc relates to this video... so keep your anti-American comments to yourself (I'm British, so don't start flaming me)!

Anyway, the aircraft blew up due to engine failure, and the pilots survived, not because the americans are idiots.

  • dude, videos of kittens can end up with a political/racist debate going on. so it is not just this type of video that causes it.

  • american planes suck they are so overhyped HELL even the amrican cars suck. Cars=germany/japan/italy; Planes=Russia. Full Stop.

  • made in USA

  • at 0:17 you can see like a cloud at the back of the plane, thats it breaking through the barrier of sound

  • my only comment is this... The ship is named after the bass player for Led Zeppelin... WHat a sick ass ship.

  • Haha!

  • LOL

Yet sadly - off topic =(

  • this isnt sad. they both lived. cant u hear the people screamin 2 parachutes?

  • I think the pressure wa stoo much around the plane and it basically crushed it. I don't know for certain though.

  • Im sure theyre designed for it. Structural malfunction is my guess.

  • Yeah probably. I'm no expert though.

  • what the hell happened?

  • good by

  • he would have died

  • Wait, you are the one that also said planes can't turn while supersonic? Golly why not?

  • Sure you did...and I take it you also are a mechanical and aerospace engineer? I'm sure that thorough knowledge of breaking the sound barrier is also necessary to be a programmer, as well as the knowledge of precisely what effects that has on the airframe.

I'm sure that a programmer is thoroughly trained in every single aspect of flight.

  • How did it blow up!!

  • So the guys survived it, right? The plane exploded and they bailed out successfully?

  • Ohhh, I didn't realize that planes in supersonic flight could only go in a straight line, especially fighter jets. Silly me...

  • jeeze..how the fuck did it blow up in the first place? 2 fast maybe a/c old? couldnt handle it? i doubt it..thier made for that shit...shiit those guys are lucky bitches.

  • Yeah. Even when the JSF comes out the F-22 will still be "King of the skies". The JSF is much less advanced and sacrifices many useful attributes for the sake of cost, program development expedience and interchangeability within the services. You can also easily tell which is the most advanced of the two by looking at export plans. The F-35 is going to the UK, Italy, Canada and others. While the F-22 is strictly US because the D.o.D refuses to sell them.

  • Nobody flies the F-14 anymore besides Iran. They even have to buy parts for them on the black market. King of the skies is the F-22 Raptor until the F-35 JSF comes out.

  • actually, the U.S. still uses the f-14, a lot. the F-22 is used very little and the JSF is already out.

  • Umm, the F-22 is still under development. It's not in service yet.

  • it is deployed but it is still under development. it is somewhat in service, just not full service.

  • No, the US doesn't use the F-14 a lot. We use the plane that is going to someday completely replace the F-14 (even though it is a better plane): the F-18 Super hornet.Blame budget.

  • but the f-14 is still involved in a lot of things. desert storm, all nimitz class aircraft carriers ive seen were filled with 14's and 18's, shock and awe, too much to list.and if the f-14 is better than the f-18, that means taht the cf-105 avro arrow would be in full service today if the americans didnt see it as a threat and indirectly cause dumbass diefenbaker to cancel it.

  • The F-18 is a cheaper plane to produce. That's the main reason the Navy is replacing the F-14. Its being phased out of service.

  • no they dont. the f-14 is retired and the f-22 just came into service last year.

  • yeah but it is still sort of under development, they are still trying to improve it. but i dont think the f-14 is retired yet. that would be a lot of replacing.

  • No, he's correct, the F-14 is no longer in service.

  • well then my info is out of date.lol. i think there will be a carrier based version of the f22 tho. when did the f14's go out of service?

  • Last December. There are no plans to make a Carrier based F-22. The F-22 was meant as a replacement for the F-15.

  • oh. in a lot of games there are f22's on carriers and i think i read it somewhere in the entry of the f22 on fighter-planes. com

  • F14 is being developed and F22 is retired it's one old analog piece of shit LMAO

  • Other way around...

  • F-14's are gone. VF-31 retired its last F-14's in Sept. '06. All former VF are now VFA. No more Tomcats. Hello F/A-18E!

  • The F-22 isn't going to be used by the Navy. The F-35 is however.

  • The F-14 was Decom'd nearly a year ago.

  • that is just taxpayer money down the drain

  • Ouch.
