It was a bird, like most of the cases.... And the pilot and RIO was ejected and survived. (In the full movie, they gave interview RIGHT AFTER the medical control). The blast wasn't the blast of the whole plane, just one of the engines exploded.
I do believe that those problems with both "compressor stalls" and "fan blade losses", only applied to the F14A-model (with TF30 engine), and were remedied with the newer F14A+/F14B and F14D- models (with better engines)
Until the end, in 2006, or allmost so, there where a mixture of A and B and D models. They began, as far as I know, to phase out the A-model first. But that was, I believe, only when they had began the prosess of retireing the F-14. So the A-model flew until the end. And I believe they where in greater numbers than the latter models to.
When a fighter jet explodes, theres nothing left. First the engine bloes, then the spare fuel, then the weapons. Shrapnel is blowen on a huge sphere around the blast area. If the pilot survived the blast (which I doubt he did) the flaming shards of steel would shred him in the air. IF he survived that, the fall into the freezing water would kill him. I'm afraid he had no chance. Pilots bail out BEFORE their hit. Once theyre hit, they usually die before they know it. :(

The JSF is much less advanced and sacrifices many useful attributes for the sake of cost, program development expedience and interchangeability within the services. You can also easily tell which is the most advanced of the two by looking at export plans. The F-35 is going to the UK, Italy, Canada and others. While the F-22 is strictly US because the D.o.D refuses to sell them.

Prandtl singularity is not seen at supersonic speed, so the vapour means jet was subsonic and you woulkd hear it if it went supersonic afterwards.

Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-412 and 414 engines suffered from compressor stalls and fan blade losses.
The F-14 also suffered from flame outs during air combat manoeuvres. At different angles of attack.
These engines were resticted to use 74% of their full power because of these problems.
Many F-14's have crashed because of these problems.
One of 2 reasons to retire the F-14's.

The General Electric F110-400 engines made it
a saver plane indeed. But why wait so long with using other engines. So many F-14's crashed because of the P&W engines.

The cloud of vapor coming off the aircraft is called a Prandtl-Glauert Singularity, and is normal. Thanks to ncalvin86 for remindig me of the name of the phenomenon

WIld video. 2 things to remember though. The F-14 for all it's reputation was a cast iron bitch to maintain(hence one of the reasons for it's decomm last year) and 2: The plane is not breaking the sound barrier but a compressability phenomenon in which the airflow over the wings and other control surfaces compress so much as to create a vapor .You can see this occuring in a number of plane videos where high G maneuvers are being performed at low speed

The shock wave generated by the compression of the fluid near the source of the disturbance is adiabatic. Increase of pressure raises the dewpoint of the vapor at a higher rate than the increase of heat. Once those two increases intersect, the cloud of vapor forms. The cloud surrounding a nuclear blast is the same phenomenon, as is the vapor cloud that forms at the tip of a cracked whip.

Yeah. Even when the JSF comes out the F-22 will still be "King of the skies". The JSF is much less advanced and sacrifices many useful attributes for the sake of cost, program development expedience and interchangeability within the services. You can also easily tell which is the most advanced of the two by looking at export plans. The F-35 is going to the UK, Italy, Canada and others. While the F-22 is strictly US because the D.o.D refuses to sell them.

Nobody flies the F-14 anymore besides Iran. They even have to buy parts for them on the black market. King of the skies is the F-22 Raptor until the F-35 JSF comes out.

No, the US doesn't use the F-14 a lot. We use the plane that is going to someday completely replace the F-14 (even though it is a better plane): the F-18 Super hornet.Blame budget.

but the f-14 is still involved in a lot of things. desert storm, all nimitz class aircraft carriers ive seen were filled with 14's and 18's, shock and awe, too much to list.and if the f-14 is better than the f-18, that means taht the cf-105 avro arrow would be in full service today if the americans didnt see it as a threat and indirectly cause dumbass diefenbaker to cancel it.

The F-18 is a cheaper plane to produce. That's the main reason the Navy is replacing the F-14. Its being phased out of service.

Last December. There are no plans to make a Carrier based F-22. The F-22 was meant as a replacement for the F-15.
