  • @senseishin ... Thats what I was worried about. I asked one of the instructors and she told me she had 3 gis. I guess I will have to buy a new one.By the way what is the difference of sokuteiki? Forgive my ignorance but I m new in Judo this is my 3rd month but I am wondering why competitors are wearing sokuteiki? By the way, can u send me the link for your other video u mentioned ? Thanx Sensei :)

  • @senseishin.Sensei, actually initially my gi was a bit big for me and I was told that if I wash it with hot water,it would shrink.Since it was a bit big ,I washed it in hot water but I realized it shrank a bit more than I wanted. Now the sleeves are a bit shorter than normal and the bottom part is shorter.Today,in the practice I noticed that others' gi longer below the belt than mine. Maybe thats why grips during the throws cause gi's bottom part come out of belt so easily.Should I buy a new one.

  • @senseishin.. Thanx for your reply sensei but seriously it mostly opens after a throw and especially in exercises involving ground work. Its is annoying really. I started wondering if others gi are different or not :) By the way, THANX a lot for showing this method of tying the belt. I ll use this way tonight when I go to Judo club.

  • @sydneyboi4fun It sounds like you may need a new gi. The best way to check would be (1) to ask the lead instructor in your dojo, and, (2) if you are a competitor, use a sokuteiki, a measuring device endorsed by the IJF, to check the various measurments of your sleeves, pants, gi length, etc. I have another youtube video on this which you can find using term sokuteiki.

  • Yeah... now the belt is ok but is there way to keep the gi not open during the throws...etc? It is so annoying to try to put it back in properly after each throw.....

  • @sydneyboi4fun Hmmm, I usually look at the gi coming open as a natural way to cool off; it can get pretty warm during practice.

  • I've never had my belt come untied in Judo.

  • Thanks! Now I just have to figure out how to untie it...

  • is this also for karate?

  • it does not matter how i tie my belt after a bit fight my judogi falls apart, and the belt stays unharmed :D

  • I really like this method of securing the belt. However, I find that the gi comes out far more frequently than the belt coming un-tied.

  • I finally learned how to tie properly after 10 years lol :D

  • Great explanation. I have Judo practice tonight, I will try this method out. With my current method, my belt always comes loose. I'm hoping this will take care of that problem! Thanks!

  • The best way to tie the belt :) Ive been doing this for years now.

  • Wow - tried this out with my son this evening - belt stayed firmly in place right through the rough and tumble of a 9-y-o Judo class. Thanks very much for posting this video!!!

  • the last part does not wont to work :s

i do it preciesly the same

can you make a vid with close ups????

  • I've put it to my favorite so i can remember every now and than how to do it right :)

  • Quite interesting

  • So many people do this on youtube without saying what they're doing, thanks for the instruction.

  • @88skisupreme i know right im geting pissed off because im a white belt got my orange belt grading in a month or so and i dont know how to tie my belt properly and i try and folow wat they do on the video but i fail and it ends up wrong :S :S:S:S:S:S:S

  • @alphie10 watch it a few more times, pause it when you need to and follow along. Youll get it.

  • @senseishin He/she is saying Dazzling novel, who, who, like the time as otherwise advised seen Convicted science, not science, with the source of chaos, neither from the old school judo also, He Yi and Qishimiezu there.

  • I recently became a black belt and also have that type of belt. I needed to learn how to make a double tie but all the internet tutorials were hard to understand. I felt on your video, and now, I can tie my belt like a pro. Thanks you !

  • This works great. Almost too great to the point were it is hard to undo. lol. It sucks more with thin belts, so if u want the sweet look bow that he has, it needs to be with a nice bjj or judo thick belt. It also took me a while to remember it cause this guy does so fast, infact sometimes i still forget how to do it in class. Haha

  • ok you lost me at the 30th tie and twist..lol

  • i want to be a black belt soooo badly

  • my obi is too big lol

  • It looks GREEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • haha i do the same bu only threw the both of them 1nce this is way better

  • LOL

  • ... and thats how to do judo!

  • This tie method is the bomb diggety. I will never tie it the normal way again.

Sometimes it stays on for two classes straight, when I tie it this way. Freakin' unbelievable.

  • Hardest part of martial arts, trying the fucking belt!!

  • Ok, now upload a vid showing how to unlock it :D

  • thanks, after 3 and half years finally tieing it right :D

  • That looks stunning sir, although I doubt my sensei will notice how well I do my belt since I'm still with a white one :)

  • How do you get a black belt? I'm still stuck with my white belt, but then again I've only been doing judo for a week :P

  • Not good for competition though. Simple knot for comps, when it falls off you have few seconds to rest

  • @bokicar1 took me 5 years and a bjj bluebelt to finally tie it correctly, the judo way. you have a good point about extra few seconds tying and sometimes you want your lapel loose for chokes.

  • my sensei didnt teach me to tie the belt that way :s

  • @felipx12 Me too >.<

  • FINALLY I CAN DO IT AFTER 503-485309763987024958 TRIES! HAHAHA THANKS :D

  • the belt is so long,i have ocne learned the kickbojing~i remenber that i dn kn H to tye it LOL~

  • 10 trys later... WHOO I CAN FINALLY DO IT :D

  • I like this way its Sexy

  • I don´t tying my bet like this.

  • how did he do that xd

  • Aaaaa! You black belt looks so cool! I´ll practice more until i become a proud black belt!

    :D

  • thx for your lesson^^

  • Awesome method!

  • Best part about this knot (apart from the fact the knot itself looks really good), is that the belt isn't crossing itself on the back. Just an aesthetic thing, but it's the way I prefer to tie my belt :)

  • Thanks Sir, this is indeed a great knot, I am using it for Aikido now.

  • I love dog judo! Thanks for posting!

  • WoW , I have to try this , i'll bring my belt and try this tie!

  • I have only been in Judo 2 days, I was asked if I need help tying the belt as they knew I have already done martial arts before. So when I went to the washroom to change I tied it the way I learnt it in karate. Seems like in this video it's quite different but once it is tied it looks the same with the knot. Is it ok to continue tying it the way I am used to, or do I need to change it to the way the video shows it?

  • @asoka2000

You should ask your sensei, but as far as I know, there is no one required way of tying the belt.

  • Judo is a martial art dumbest!

  • @HenriqueHabbo

Says the one with Habbo in his name

  • A beautiful simple knot, thank you.

  • Quick question that is a little off the video's topic... I want to buy a judo uniform and I usually buy size 4, but I don't know if I should go to size 3

    I'm 5'6" and 140lbs.

  • @deguimerautube It depends on arm length, shoulder breadth etc. ask your coach.

  • @deguimerautube Definately size 4. I'm 5' 2'' and im 120lbs. I wear a size 4 and it fits perfect !

  • Well, this looks cool. It looks so simple, but it's more complicated to tie than a regular, shoelace-type tying.

  • helpful !

  • I have never seen this kind of tying, but I like the outcome. Very nice... Subscribing...

  • I did this for almost 7 years and now ive completely forgotten it XD

  • Great video! this is the best way to tie your belt during practice so that it does not fall off.

  • lol last miniute till lesson, and I got my own gi, BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO TYE IT BRAWLL

  • this is flawless, my instructor complimented it and hes a 3rd dan black belt he said he never seen such a way!

  • great video

  • Very nice option...I am a big guy (A5) and my belt always gets untie, tried your version and voilá = )

    Obrigado from Brazil!

  • duude this is amazing, thanks a lot

  • Oh my god you have no idea how much this has helped!

  • merci vous l'attacher aussi mieu ke mon maître!

  • useful video

  • Thanks :D this video is very helpful ! now i know how to do it

  • Thanks man, it's really helpful

  • slow down mate haha

  • perfect :-)

at the begining, i just forgot to pass behind the two... but after two three viewings, it's all good !

    Many Thanks from france

  • Do you tie the Taekwon-do belt the same? Because I do Taekwon-do

  • If you got a big Gi try to put that in the dryer for high temperature it will shrink lol that's what happened to mine

  • Thanks for the tip. I have a rather thick belt and since I've been out of the dojo for a while it doesn't like to stay tied. I did a 2 hour class of throws tonight and had zero problems. I'll be sharing this knot with the rest of the school!

  • U FAIL!!!!

  • Congrats to anyone who could do it this way but after several attempts mine never came out right. I saw another video where it was much simpler to tie it.

  • @Jayslugs

That's because this knot has more wraps to increase the friction. The other videos show a standard square knot style tie. This knot is more complicated but worth it if your belt doesn't stay tied.

  • thanks for the help

  • This video help me a lot, thanks!

  • thanks for the help, i used to tie it any old fashion and it always got loose. :)

  • My sensei in Japan taught me how to tie this way, I use to tie it the other way and got crap for it when I went to Japan for my summer Judo sessions.

  • Really nice!!! Yokata!!!

  • looks right to me .........never comes off on any of my tournaments

  • I'm having trouble, my obi is one size too small and i dont wanna buy another. any tips on tying it?

  • @aaronhanak

Sorry, I don't know of a tying method to address this issue.

  • @senseishin thanks anyway, i may have found a method of tying it

  • @aaronhanak try with diet pils (?)

  • @CortadoDoble wow, you just assume im fat

  • @aaronhanak you could go to a linen store and maybe find a similar colored/strong material to stitch on and lengthen the obi?

  • @kendokun0 thank you, but i've found a method tying it

  • @aaronhanak lol me.. but this way works.. for me.. it just wont be extra long like his

  • @aaronhanak shed some pounds..lol sorry

  • @juddadam2 XD but im not fat

  • @aaronhanak You can tie it without the step at 0:17 for extra length, although that may make it too long and you'd have to cut it.

  • @N00l3ER7 Thank you so much.

  • @aaronhanak just do a lap with the belt around your waist

  • This is very good end original way to tying your belt

  • Useless video, please remake the vid using a bright coloured belt so we can see what you're doing...

  • Why in black? I can't see what happens

  • @EetieD because he's a black belt...?

  • Especially good for a new stiff belt.

  • Thank you! I'm a beginner in Judo, just got my yellow belt. But this way of tying the would really help me already! Now I just got to find a way to stop my suit from going to hell without re-tying the belt -.-'

  • Hi,thanks for the video.I´m an Aikidoka and it´s good way to bind the obi if you wearing Hakamas.Very stable and fix.

  • i dont understand the wind at the beginning

  • @scorpions9197

    Can you be more specific?

  • @scorpions9197 this way there is only a single layer of belt at the rear, there is no visible cross over.

  • @scorpions9197 They make the belt's longer so they have to wind it up more, it helps keep the belt from sliding down, I think.... Maybe.

  • io non faccio così ma il risultato è lo stesso !

  • We use this way of tying the belt if we have hakamas on and are doing sword work in Ju Jitsu. A) it looks better B) its uniform all the way round the waist C) it stops sword slipping out, which can be dangerous.

  • great! This is neat, comfortable, and doesnt have to be tied so tight that my stomach used tu hurt. Thank you. Thank you.

  • there are many ways to work on your obi but got to start with the original way first. to make it strong and comfortable.

  • thanks man!!

i'm new in this and is very helpful

  • now a video for untying it? haha

  • Yeah now my belt no longer loosens but my judogi keeps slipping out haha

  • sick, no more tournament stoppage , Im gonna rock it , ippon!

  • Thank you sensei now i know how yo yie my belt... during randori and the other on how you kneel back to back

  • k wow thats not how to tie a judo belt guys

  • The key message is not is locked!

  • Far too complicated - the belt can be tied with less effort.

  • Woww...thankyou.

Now I dont have to keep re-tieing my loose belts again during randori.

  • is very very good

    well done¡¡¡¡

  • In most of Europe tournaments this method is legal.....

  • i've got it down to a T haha, cheers

  • cant do that with my 260m belt

  • thats a long-ass belt

  • @TheCrimsonStorm sry, i ment 260cm

  • Thanks for this vid. I've been training for almost 2 years and my belt, tied this way, has never come undone.

  • Hey how long did it take you to learn how to tie your belt corectly?

  • There is no correct way... its whichever works, just like judo you are shown so many different moves, and you take what works for you

  • Is perfect !!!! 5 stars video

  • arent only black belt holders allowed to tie it like that?

  • @papitodo Yes, I did this at a tournament and got DQ'd...My sensei was disappointed.

  • Very good, but traditionaly, should it not cross over at the back?

  • is this acceptable for my aikido classes?

  • I went to different martial art schools with my son. Nobody ties this way. But my son is the only, whose belt stays on and looks accurate thanks to that video.

  • i dont think my belt is the right size >:( one end of the belt is always too long. what do i do wrong :(

  • If you notice, at about 17 seconds, I have to shift the belt around in order to center it. This ensures that the ends come out even at the finish. It takes a little practice according to your belt length, waist size, etc. but that should help.

  • Is this Judo way of tying a belt the same way as Karate?

  • @9999eachhit ah... just adjust it a bit. so dont start at the exact middle of the belt when u start wrapping it around ur waist. maybe 4 to 7 inches to 1 side. u'll get it as u go. :)

  • @9999eachhit You are simply stupid.

  • This is wrong...you can't use this type in a tornement...you MUST to tying right or you can not fight.

  • I have heard that, but as far as I know, this is local tournament decision. There is no IJF standard for tying the belt in a particular knot. Plus, this is perfectly accptable in any non-competition event, which covers 95% of judo activities.

  • @RicardoIvanov the way u tie ur belt dsnt matter at ur judo suit if its a tight cut u cannot fight thats ijf rules

  • @RicardoIvanov - Then this is for practice which is when you tie your belt 99% of the time. In a tournament you can tie it correctly since you want it to come untied anyway so you can get a break hahal!

  • @RicardoIvanov

Yeah, I've competed a lot. I use this tie. I'm trying to figure out why you think it's somehow illegal. Having the belt come undone is undesirable in tournaments (at least for the referees), because the belt is considered part of the uniform.

  • @RicardoIvanov I'm a referee in judo in Norway, and I have not found any requirements in the IJF- competition rules that states how the belt should be tied, only that it should be neat, and not easily come undone.

  • @RicardoIvanov Currently judo world championship ends today I belieave, and I've seen plenty of fighters with the belt like this.. so I guess if it's allowed in world tournment it should be allowed in any other...

  • Very nicely done. Not one of those pseudo hints you could find on youtube. Totally recommended!

  • Cool video. Thanks for the tip.

  • thanks i didnt know that trick and its very easy to do

  • This is the way. I'm so full of seeing bad knots everywhere even by highly graded practicioners...

  • that shit is tight when you put your belt on. it is even hard to get off if you are trying to undo the knot I like it! Thanksssssss man.

  • I often times have problems with my belt in BJJ. I'll be sure to try this out!

    Thanks for the tip!

  • this is the best way out of what I have seen so far!

  • The idea of the Judogi is just 100 years old, and the concept became so popular that other martial arts adapted it. This solution is not old-fashioned, but the best thing you can do.

  • The initial wrap-around is just so that the belt doesn't overlap in the back. The knot variant is what keeps the belt from coming undone.

  • Thanks for the great explanation. I looked everywhere trying to find a video explaining it. I'm going to start having our kids tie their belts this way. Most of our kids end up losing it in warm ups and it stays off until we bow out

  • Ive always done it the other way. But now I read that this was the traditional japanese way to tie your belt. Is that true? ´cause id like to do it in the original way.

..ah and yeah well explained !

  • Stupid arstim, poor comment. This guy is a blackbelt show some respect, ffs. YOU dont have to do it this way nobody is telling you to. And a guy with a video of a virtual aquarium is calling this tutorial stupid.. what is wrong with this world.

  • I'm a black belt aswell, what's ur point...

  • you obviously didnt learn much then

  • I thought so too, at first, but it is really easy with a bit of practice. My six year old learned it quite quickly, and it is very effective.

  • I still prefer the 'usual' way. It's a lot easier to explain, and being a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Hapkido student myself, a lot easier to comprehend.. All you have to do is tie, tuck and tuck, tie. This one's got you doin helixes and loop-de-loops and I think I even saw a guy taking tickets in there somewhere.

  • its wrap....wrap......maybe some more wrap...under tuck...tuck...and tuck.. very complicated...honestly..

  • this guy needs a bigger belt.

  • that is indeed a nice, neat knot. I will have to try and remember to do mine like that, but I expect sensei won't allow it :(

  • Finally, my belt has stopped falling off! Thanks!

  • @ImprintAudio Haha...That reminds me of a friend of mine^^

He is losing his belt nearly every judo lesson - and we both do judo for 9 years now(both brown-belt)^^ So I guess it is not sooo damn important to ty your belt this perfect.

Anyway. I like this way of tying it
