I have to agree. As much as I like Yamato and the ship (I have the Bandai SOP version), there's no way it could have survived a year long voyage to another planet against all of the Gamilon Empire. I guess I find the characters more interesting than the actual plot and look past all the ridiculous plots. It's the way I feel about Macross. There's no way a ship that isn't even a mile long could house 60,000 civilians. Great anime, but highly unrealistic.

I agree it's unrealistic, but toward the end of the first series Desslock goes mad at the improbability of the Yamato making it all the way to Gamilon - and destroying the planet. He screams that it's a ghost ship. I kinda see the Yamato as a haunted, somewhat unworldly ship that is in a sense spiritually protected - as a result survives against improbable odds. Just my geeky take.
