Ah, that brings me back. I always considered this film as Starwars's poor cousin. It did have similarities to Starwars, but i don't think it was intentional. It was accidently rubbish.
Just for the record, this isn't another Star Wars rip-off. The story is actually a twist on the film The Magnificent Seven or Seven Samurai, James Cameron did the special effects, and James Horner did the music; and, for the budget this film was made with, it's a fun movie!
@1rammstein21 Yup, those disparaging it have no idea of the kind of movie it is - that trailer in trying to rip Star Wars (like every other sci-fi trailer at the time did) ends up hiding the wonderful grimness of the real film. It was one of my childhood favorites.
It may not be Star Wars, and the main character's spaceship looks like it has huge testicles, but at least someone had the balls to go out there and try.
A big boobed spaceship and untalented acting by unknown's and John boy"great"I remember this crap and it wasn't entertaining then and now it's just a comedy or is it?
cheesy 80s at its best just like the 50s sci fi movies it was pure fun telling a fun story without being pretentious . star wars was great but but i am not a star wars nerds who give a s**it i still prefer this to the countless pretentious sci fi hollywood crap with their damn f**ing CGI and overated budget... movies these days take themself too seriously where is the good ol days when it was cheesy and fun? they dont make them like this anymore...
I'm really not comparing this movie to any crap or goodies of today but ...well, with this trailer the movie seems to suck a bit ...too much classics remade by the years that ruined it all maybe. Even though they are possibly original hehehe.
BBTS is to be released July 12th on both Blue Ray and DVD. I've always liked this film. I saw it the summer of 1980 at the drive-in along with the special edition of Close Encounters. I'm glad BBTS is now a cult classic. The theme song is a classic as well.
@NamathTheLegend The soundtrack was composed by James Horner, who also did a number of Star Trek films. You can hear the similarities between this score and what he composed for Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Very similar - and excellent - space adventure music!
Wow! Looks like a multi-million dollar heap of dog sh*t. How much loot did they blow making this turd? and now it's on blu ray! Can't wait to spend my hard earned money on something else instead...like another toothbrush, or 10 tablets of white paper, or 4 wooden backscratchers, or a toilet seat warmer, or a box of shower caps, or some reading glasses for when I get old, or a bag of marbles, or a coin roller for my dimes.
I thought this was OK when I say it on TV as a kid ! I know can see it was total crap compared to other films and George Lucas should have sued. Total rip off.

although this is a rip off of star wars, i think george lucas has seen this.
at 2:19, the ship looks like a clone trooper carrier (or whatever their called). i have a feeling George ripped off some of the ships here for the prequals.
How much like star wars can we make a movie without it actually being called "star wars"? We needs worlds like War and Star? hmm...star battle....no! too close....
Dude from the A-Team, Dude from nightmare on elm street, Robert Vaughan, spaceship shaped like the ovaries and vagina..... and James Cameron on special effects................. its gold I tells ya!
23.19 Questioner: This may be a dumb question. There is a movie called “Battle Beyond the Stars.” I don’t know if you are familiar with it or not. I guess you are. It just seemed to have what you are telling us included in the script. Is this correct?
Ra: I am Ra. This particular creation of your entities had some distortions of the Law of One and its scenario upon your physical plane. This is correct.
My Family noticed that as well!! I was a kid and I didn't really understand what the fuss was about! =D I also remember one of the ships had an annoying strobe light in it! Ahhh the 80's!
@wasp27 Most films, especially those in the sci-fi and horror genre, had some element of fun to them which made you want to rewatch the films. After the year 2000, when they felt they had CGI perfected (which they TOTALLY don't), suddenly they could put anything they wanted on the screen and they got rid of all the fun. Watch this movie and then watch a turd like 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' and tell me which one you're likely to watch over again.
@russianimp1 The CGI in Jurassic Park was very well done...however, crap like "Sky Captain..." was just dire. I still wanna see "Rise..." (being a fan of the originals), but too many films are waayy too CG heavy-too much CG, not enough story. Ok films like Transformers NEED to be CG heavy BUT there is a line. I love films that still use minature models, like Starship Troopers 1 and Star Trek, and Ray Harryhausen's stuff will ALWAYS be classic!
yea, this was a failed remake of the movie "the seven samurai" which was also remade into "the magnificent seven", i can't believe James Cameron apparently directed the special effects in this film...
They practically showed the ending in the trailer. I dont wanna see who dies in the trailer!! I liked the bright white dudes. I didnt want them to die. And Vaughn's character was cool. The main dude's spaceship was rubbish but I seem to remember that it talked. I wanna see this again now.
Just noting that Robert Vaughn was in both "The Magnificent 7" and "Battle Beyond The Stars". He essentially played the same character, whom died in both.
What do you get when you take seven samurai and cross it with star wars? It's not pretty. And yet I do remember it fondly. Although the only thing I remember is the bondage part where the reptile alien has the chick trussed up like a side of beef. Super Cheeze but still I remember it well enough i did a search for it.
@anditslikethat He and most of his followers still think everything has to do with Bush, so, yeah, it kinda does. Plus it was a joke. Granted, not as good as Margaret Cho's "it would be an insult to Hilter to compare Bush to him" (A-HAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!"), but a joke nonetheless. Move on with your life.
I watched this movie on the sci fi network back in 2000 it came on like 3am it was the worst space film ever. Until i saw wing commander sorry freddie prince jr.
You guys should actually watch this before commenting. The ship designs very very imaginative (compared to the ep1-3 shit we got now). The music was inspiring. And Robert Vaughn showed us the real meaning of anti-hero. Since 90% of sci-movies have 13-year olds (to pull in the "cool" crowd I guess) as protagonists, this movie is ripe for the remake (hey they did it for Clash of the Titans, which was equally, if more, obscure).
James Cameron did the model work, and then did art direction for the film. Supposedly he funneled his paychecks back into the production to make up for Corman wanting to cut corners at the last minute. The "boobs" ship Nell was Cameron's idea.
This is one of the many movies around this time period that were trying to make money off the obsession for space opera created by Star Wars. Other examples are Black Hole, the Star Trek movies, and Alien.
A lil' tweakin' in the FX, some better dialoge, & better actors, & I am sure that this would've been a better movie...I wonder what James Cameron could do with this movie?
Credit where its due, to James Horner. "A" music for a "B-" movie. As good as anything Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams ever did for other space operas of this era. Whatever R Corman paid Horner, he got a bargain. Since the theme music basically sold this (very) little movie.
Space John-boy kicked ass. You couldn't kick more ass if it was the ass-kickingest day of the year and you had an electrified ass-kicking machine ... Actually the chick with the giant boobs really did it for me.
I remember seeing this at the old Embassy theatre in Zimbabwe Africa many years ago, wasnt quite Star Wars but it was Scifi so I enjoyed it. It just seemed that every Scifi movie after Star Wars tried so hard but couldnt quite keep up or do anything drastically different.
courtney this was an excellent film. it had EXCEPTIONAL soundtrack and sound effects, above average(for the time) visual effects, a fair cast and its based loosley on the seve samurai. all in all what more do you want from a sci fi film?
Yep, the worst remake of "The Magnificent 7", which was the best remake of "The Seven Samurai"...it's all on the wheel baby, it all goes around.

Credit where its due, to James Horner. "A" music for a "B-" movie. As good as anything Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams ever did for other space operas of this era. Whatever R Corman paid Horner, he got a bargain. Since the theme music basically sold this (very) little movie.

Sorry, have to pick myself off the floor after that heavy dose of nostalgia... WOW. I'd totally forgotten about this movie. Its wonderfully cheesy.

Space John-boy kicked ass. You couldn't kick more ass if it was the ass-kickingest day of the year and you had an electrified ass-kicking machine ... Actually the chick with the giant boobs really did it for me.

I remember seeing this movie at the old Ramova theater in Chicago, IL. I liked the music score, even today I still like it. Thanks for posting it.

The Flash Gordon movie did manage to be a bit diferent from Star Wars,..that movie was'nt a very big hit though,..not theatricaly anyway.

Do you mean the one Queen did the music for? Yeah Flash Gordon was a bit different, yeah just different.

Thats right, the one that came out in 1980. Well actualy, that movie was more similar to Barbarela than Star Wars I thought.

I'm loving that James Horner soundtrack! He hasn't done much since 2003. I miss his style of music regardless of his occasional formulaic scores.

courtney this was an excellent film. it had EXCEPTIONAL soundtrack and sound effects, above average(for the time) visual effects, a fair cast and its based loosley on the seve samurai. all in all what more do you want from a sci fi film?

If Star Wars had never existed, what would you say about BBTS then?
namathguarantee12 2 years ago 2
Probably....Ever since Alien there hasn't been a scifi quite like that, kidding mate BBTS was great...but still Star Wars did exist and set the bar.

Another film that tried to cash in on star wars.
