Allowing for the familiar distortions of drama, this is an uncannily realistic depiction of Mormon culture, both LDS and "Fundamentalist." It certainly rings much more true than the self-serving, antiseptic agitprop churned out by the PR-obsessed LDS hierarchy.
FWIW: I was raised LDS, served a mission, served in a Bishopric, and spent years living in SLC, Provo/Orem, and Logan. "Big Love" could, in many ways, be taken as a cultural documentary.
