One more thing..I supported Tatiana and the Russian girls because they actually seemed like they loved and cared about each other. Their hugs and support for each other seemed 10x more authentic than the Americans'. I respected the sisterhood of the Russian team.
I'm an American (female) and was 19 in 1992. I loved watching that year's Olympics. For whatever reason, I rooted for Tatiana Gutsu over Shannon Miller. I do think Shannon had fewer bobbles overall, but Tatiana's moves struck me as more difficult. Another thing I liked about Tatiana was that she didn't seem pampered like Shannon. The latter had this doting coach around her at all times. Tatiana was like the tough girl who had to deal with shit on her own...lol.
Of all the things I did not expect to happen during those games, I did not expect to have my little boy heart drop-kicked by a pixie-esque Soviet gymnast I had never heard of before. But that's exactly what happened.
I felt like such a traitor for it, too.lol I only watched those games for Shannon Miller, and out of patriotism for my country. Yet, there I was, crushing on this pretty, blonde girl from the Ukraine.
Tatiana & Shannon put on a hell of a show. Both were deserving of gold.
Assuming the scores were even going into the vault, Shannon is the AA gold medalist. Her first vault was a 10, period. And her second vault, if Shush had done it in 88, it would have been a 10 too. And as to the comment about nobody would remember Roza or talk about her if not for all the controversy - I would talk about her forever and never forget her, no matter what.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
In those days of the Soviet Union, the government furnished her parents with a house while Tatiana trained for the Olympics near her training facility.
I had to admit, I don't like this gymnast. Not only she beat Shannon Miller in the AA, but took the place of Roza Galieva who rightfully qualify for the AA. Gustu shouldn't be even in the AA because of a fall in the Team Optionals, but the coaches took Roza out so Gustu could take her place and win the AA. What such injustice! Those who qualify AA, have the right to compete in it, not be replace since competing in the AA is a great experience and oppurtunity for any gymnast in this event.
You shouldn't not like her for what the coaches decided to do. I feel bad for Rosa, worse after what happened to her 1996, but I still think Goutsou was a great athelete. She split her prize money with Galieva, and the two of them never spoke again. The coaches served a great injustice to Galieva, but no one considers the cost to Goutsou.
That still doesn't make up for Gustu taking the place of Roza. The coaches took her out thinking Roza isn't worth it, claiming she was injured, but she wasn't. Gustu should just have licked her wounds and waited for another 4 years or just prepare for the event finals. Roza pays while Gustu benefits. There was no cost for Gustu, Roza was the one who pays for the costs.
You're right. It doesn't make up for the coaches faking Roza's injuries. But these are little girls who do what the coaches say, and it's not fair to hold Tatiana in the wrong, I don't think. I think that Tatiana did what she could to make it right by Roza. But it's not like she volenteered or anything. She had as much choice in the matter as Roza, but she just got the better end of the stick.
The point is Gustu shouldn't be in the all-around in the first place. Roza earned her spot to be in the all-around, without any falls unlike Gustu. If Gustu wanted to she can have her chance again in the 1996 Olympics. If someone earns a spot through hard-work and honestly then they deserve it, not someone who didn't earned that spot, but yet still been put there, because they are believed to be better.
@Lilstarrgazr Roza should feel blessed. She is far more famous and got far more attention than she ever would have for being pulled from the AA. Otherwise she would be a nobody who nobody would talk about today.
@Lilstarrgazr if it makes you more famous, more hyped, more pampered, and takes away something that wasnt going to amount to much anyway, then yeah you should.
It was a huge cost to Gutsu, she had a nervous breakdown from the pressure and never competed again.... When the put Gutsu back in the competition she was expected to win the gold.. something that Galieva could not have done...the pressure on her would have been immense...That fact that Gutsu did got out and win the gold, inspite of everything shows the coaches made a good tactical choice for the team....
i loved watching tatiana, but i still can remember how upset i was when she beat shannon...tatiana's vault did not compare...her legs were apart and slightly bent and her feet were not pointed the whole time...but i still love her, i just hink shannon deserved to win.
TWELVE ONE THOUSANTHS OF A POINT, NOT twelve one hundrenths!!!!!!!!! 0.012, NOT 0.12!!! I know this has already been corrected, but I just needed to say it again. How can someone broadcast something across the entire world with such a huge error? I don't get it!
I love Gutsu so much to this day. Shes by far the best of all time. I have the games on VHS and I just watched it a week ago. I was 19 when I first saw it and now im 35. This brings back memories!
John Tesh should be hog-tied and dragged behind a pickup truck. He is, bar-none, the most annoying puke to comment on any athletic event. The way he incessantly exploited those Russian gymnasts in order to dramatize the commentary is utterly dispicable.
Gosh you're so right, he overdramatized everything. Plus she beat Shannon by 12 one-thousandths, not 12 one-hundredths. That's a big difference in gymnastics.
The second half is on the Little Women soundtrack, right when John Tesh starts talking about how the fight came down to two young ladies, blah blah blah...
John Tesh is so cheesy...I remember when they came out of this piece they had a shot of Shannon stretching in the warm up gym. Waiting for her 2nd chance. Which wasn't to be.
One more thing..I supported Tatiana and the Russian girls because they actually seemed like they loved and cared about each other. Their hugs and support for each other seemed 10x more authentic than the Americans'. I respected the sisterhood of the Russian team.

At the time, I wanted Shannon Miller to win, but watching both their routines now, Gutsu's every event seemed way harder than Miller's

LOL! The comments here about John Tesh are hilarious.
I loved both gymnasts back then. I was rooting for Shannon the entire time, but when Tatiana won, I was so happy. Her gymnastics are incredible.
Shannon looked slightly annoyed when Tatiana put her arm around her on the podium. lol
