They all die (except sergeant Hunter whose fate is uncertain), not just the black man! The black guy dindn't die first either. They die in this order:

1. the gunner,

2. the two firemen

3. the extras under the firebox

4. the pilot and the captain McGuire (the black men)

5. the rest of them die one by one until the end of the movie.
