  • England is a great example for what happens when the government and religion get inter-mingled. Church attendance in the Church of England is something like 10%. Lack of separation just about strangled the church.

  • Freedom of religion depends on freedom from government meddling. So IMO, forestalling another "Church of England" is pro-religion, not atheistic. To that point, marriage is a religious institution and government shouldn't be in the business of dispensing marriage licenses. True, they need to guarantee the legal aspects of partnership, but if two unmarried orphans wish to establish a legal partnership so that they'll each have a "next of kin", why shouldn't the government allow it?
