You made a few good points crazy, but like you said you are no pro. Most professionals would agree you should stain vs paint exterior wood, whenever possible, especially when the surface is so close to the water table, and always use the best products available despite the cost. Man hours are always usually more expensive then any product upgrade, and who can pay to do the same job twice? That's why we like doing the right job with the right products the first time.
It's called prepping the surface the right way.. I would use a heat gun to remove the old paint sand with a 80 grid paper apply kilz2 exterior primer then apply an exterior paint of my choice remember you get what you pay for.. I've even used Walmart color place paint on a deck and five years later still no peeling! And this deck sits about 3in off the ground.. It's all about prep work! Mind you I'm no pro but trial and erro works. When it comes to paint and most anything else your paying more
Behr performs their performance tests using their highest grade paint compared to the lowest grade of the competition. That is the only way they can claim any positive results. Anytime I HAVE to use Behr, I cringe. I have been painting for 10 years, and have stained, painted, and clear coated, many many decks. Deckscapes is far superior to anything Behr can provide. I do agree that you should use a semi solid or transparent rather than solid, it just gives you more options down the road.
We clean and refinish more BEHR deck in a season than any other... and solids DO NOT belong on any deck no matter how it is built. It will peel guaranteed. TimberSeal, net
You should've used a quality solid stain. Get a hardwood floor sander (after sinking all the nails below surface) and sand deck to bare wood. Next work in a good brand oil based solid stain with a brush. Then you can roll on a latex on that. Again solid stain. You will then just have to power wash and latex every two years after
BEHR sucks !!!!!!!!! go ahead use it people and regret it. trust me been their done that mistake. They will not stand up the waranty. Its a Home Depot pushed product. ITS JUNK PERIOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now to be fair to Behr and their product line, I am sure they are quite the reputable company. They basically offer home owner convenience, quick and fast inexpensive way to do it themselves. Now although it may be good enough for the average home owner. do it your self-er, our discerning clients want optimal results. With all that being said, we are not here to bash Behr products, I am sure they have their purpose, but for our company they have no use.
@powerwashdragon I totally agree. We used Behr floor and deck paint on our front porch and stairs, which by the way almost never get walked on as we use the side door. Six months later we had a horrendous mess of peeling paint everywhere. the Behr company provided us with 2 free gallons of paint to redo the job, but the rep admitted this would happen year after year because of the moisture lifting the paint. Even the sales guy at Home Depot told us he won''t recommend Behr.
you have no idea what you are talking about. My company has used behr deck stains for ove r15 years with no problems. how long have YOU been in business fool ? You need to research your products before you start posting this junk and hurting reputable companies
@joey45255 and @khmheh Once again here are the facts: when the the underneath is always in contact with moisture, any film forming product in this situation is prone to fail with anything less then the best top rated products in the world; you don't have a chance with any long term coverage or protection. No stain, just paint, and it was behr's. Either way, in this situation I would never recommend any type of paint.
@joey45255 and@khmheh To finish what i was saying if i was to ever paint a deck that was sitting on grade, it would not be Behr or most other finishes that comes out of a box store. Now most of this have been mentioned in previous posts or the video which it seems you did not check out . It would serve the commentators well, and save my time as well as theirs, if they thoroughly looked into the post and at least watched the whole video before posting comments, but no it never fails!
@joey45255 Joey I wish you many more years in the industry, it's outfits like yours that keep us in business. We are the ones they call after they hate the results from crappy finishes and bad judgment calls. Our company only been in business five years but have probably made more inroads in product development and cleaning techniques then you can imagine, besides before joining this company I worked 17 yr.s for someone else, so I know very much of what i am talking about. Please, don't be mad.
@joey45255 I looked you up. You seem to know a lot about junk and smelling toes Joey, but not much about the property beautification industry. By the way, you never mention what the name of your company is, and you never uploaded any videos. it always the guys like you, that always have so much to say. Have the best day!
@joey45255 I got on this video to learn how to rehab my deck which is peeling BIG TIME. It was finished last summer with Behr product. Will go to Sherwin Williams this time
@Leadwoman60 Good for you, with the right application and technique your results can be optimal. Sherwin Williams have an excellent product line called Deckscapes but currently we have been enamored by, the quality, durability, forgivefulness, and ease of use of, Benjamin Moore's Arborcoat. We also recommend Sikkens for some projects.
It's clearly peeling because you didn't use (a good) primer on the bare wood. No wood surface is going to hold paint without being primed, especially a deck surface. Did you use paint or stain specific to Decks?
@khmheh I think there is some kind of miscommunication. First off, Our company did not make the mistake of putting paint on a low grade wood structure. it was done by the home owner and painted before that by the previous owner. We were called in to put a band-aid over the problem so our client can get another year or so out of the deck without going to great expense. They mention in the video that they were going to rip the deck down next year.
@shawnstam You have a valid point Shawn, but remember any film forming product over a horizontal surface on or below grade that is as porous and pass through as wood is prone to fail especially when trying to use box store products. You are right wood boats are painted everyday and withstand all kind of elements. The average home owner couldn't get their hands on that stuff and even if they did wouldn't know how to apply it properly. Thanks for your comment.
Well I would like to say it is not as good as the products we usually use , Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Sikkens, Zinsser. Thanks for your comment.
Listen, you can paint a deck, they can look great, you just have to WAIT 6 months to allow the wood to dry first if it is a new deck otherwise the paint wont adhere because of the moisture and chemicals present in PT lumber.
You can see that deck is level with the grade and has no ventilation. Any type of film forming product was destined to peel. Once someone makes a decision to paint a deck, they are married to it.
Well actually you would be surprised to how many people are misinformed. I think intelligence level is not an integral part of making that choice. I mean people know they should cover the deck with something but perhaps not quite sure with what. This is one of the reasons why I stay busy, but thanks for your comment

Paint you get from home depot is shit. If you use a primer and a marine polyurithane paint you will have a paint job that last for years.
