Nicely done interview. I saw the movie, it was such an amazing story that I had to get the book to read all the details. Loved the book too! For those questioning his national pride, that's not the case at all. Two of his children speak Chinese and they have traveled back to China many times. He was so proud to attend the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The Chinese should be very proud of his achievement in ballet and the national pride he ironically brought to China as a world class ballet dancer, w
I saw the movie which accurately reflected the horrors of the monsters: Mao and his wife, Jiang Qing's era in China. It was beautifully done with exquisite ballet interspersed in its toil and few years of glory, and agony at a short career's end, when Li's soloist partner was replaced by his future 2nd wife. The interview and story moved me to tears and I celebrate Li's glory and his mother, a powerful woman’s retort to the Communists when accused of raising such a ‘traitor son’!
What an amazing life. I read his book in 2 days. Li Cunxin is an inspiration. Im thrilled to know he is living here in Australia with his beautiful family...it gives me a sense of connection to him....He also won Australian father of the year last year. A brilliant talent and a humble person. Li is wonderful.
what troubles me is, Chairman Mao is a thought leader in our present White House. I am glad China is no longer the country Mr. Li remembers, but the man who ruined it and starved so many millions of people with his tyranny and stupidity is someone our American leaders admire. Frightening.
I don't like him!! He is one of these Chinese who has no pride at all! Who are always telling some so-called "poor" story to western people who know so little about China and the people. They know you guys are interested to hear 'BAD' stories about China. They are buying sympathy from people by disgracing the country and their peers. But, if a person has no respect and pride, how could you expect they are telling the truth?
@nandeable I think that was how China was then, not how it is now. I find it to be a testimonial to how much China has advanced over the years, not a lack of pride in his ethnic identity.
@wikct2 Yes, but perhaps I did not word myself clearly. I meant that it showed China in the past, and as a comparison to China now, shows how much we have advanced. :) Or I am simply wrong.
@nandeable it is ok that he has the right to say what he likes say. Plus his experience is something happen decades ago. China today is not China yesterday. I just hope people will not always look at China and judge China with outdated information and and I certainly hope that this guy will still love his home country, China.
@nandeable I'm chinese as well and i don't think the he or the film or book is painting chinese people in a negative light. if there's any criticism it's for the government at the time, and not about how chinese are inherently "bad" but lived in very trying times, with a very strict and authoritarian government.
@youratwitface Totally agree - I couldn't put the book down! & I think I cried around 5 times - no exaggeration by any means! Very humbling to say the least!

@vintagestrat247 Since he's lived in Australia since 1995, I don't think it'll be an issue.
