@hylianprincess7 why? we had a customer at work lose all of her info, precious pictures and all because the stupid crapstor diamondmax 9 no longer spins up to full speed. She was very upset ( not at us ). But i have seen so many maxtors die its outrageous, i have never had ANY issues with WDC drives (except the scorpios and the infamous idle3 feature, disable it by running a DOS program). fuck maxtor , i stand my ground, just as bad as the ibm 'deathstars'
@c0rrupts3ct0r555 Then I guess I just have a magic touch with maxtor after using the same one for 11 years. Granted, I have slave drives hooked up, because the memory I used exeeded that of the Maxtor's years ago, but my WD backups have failed before my Max has, and so have my slave drives. And I have the 80 gig IDE. NEVER has it malfunctioned, or even BSoD'd due to a virus. It's been working beautifully, as have the rest on seperate towers, for 11 years.
@hylianprincess7 it would jhust die later on, they like to fail without warning, my fix is get a really big hammer smash it to bits, then send 120v to the PCB and watch it fry. tons of WDCs that i have had work great fast no issues whatsoever my friend still has a WDC 1001fals 1tb that has a broken power connector but is still working great with 100% health and performance. lets see a maxtor do that.
mine is making the exact some noise... i'm not sure if its dying due to wear and tear or the fact that I accidentally pulled the cord on the hard drive a few days ago (it was connected in an external case and used as a backup drive). Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm thinking of bringing it to a hard drive recovery specialist....
microsoft have included extra terrestrial tranmissions into the xbox hdd this is so they can dominate the universe with there prices aswell as the world!
They would be from major manufacturers of 2.5" hard drives (Maxtor is not one of them, though Seagate, which owns Maxtor, is). The choice by Microsoft and Sony would be which ones were lower cost to buy.
It has probably detected a fault and is beeping to inform you of whatever is up with it, kind of like some cell phones beep when the batteries are low.
It's the motor and platters resonating as the servo control is trying to spin it up at a controlled rate yet can't probably due to stiction.
The heads are mounted on floaters that, when the drive is off, are placed off the platters on ramps (ramp load/unload technology) or, in the case of the Maxtor, the floaters physically resting on landing zones on the platters.
Stiction occurs when the floaters stick to the platters. and may cause noises on power up, such as phaser noises or even "notes."
Head stiction to the platter, which is causing the motor to resonate at frequencies as the servo tries to spin the platters up but can't since they are jammed.
Other drives make phaser noises with this.
As suggested before, you might want to tap the drive with a rubber mallet to break the stiction and get the drive to spin up.
Once you do, clone the whole drive to a new one, preferably one not made by Maxtor, and throw away the old one.
thanks! i have the hard drive hook up to a external drive. should i leave it in that or put it in the computer? which do you think would be the best way for it to read?
Maxtor music, beat that pos with a fucking hammer, it deserves it, Dont ever buy maxtor.. D:

@DarkOmenz It means your HDD's spindle got seized up by something. You can purchase tools to unstick the motor.

wait...my xbox uses a MAXTOR?!?! i better back up my data :P
cheetawolf 3 years ago 2
Nah.
If it's a regular XBox, it uses either a 10 or 8 GB Seagate or an 8 GB Western Digital.
The only time it uses a Maxtor is if you modded your XBox to use a bigger drive.

What do the XBOX 360's and the PS3 units use?

Unfortunately, that I don't know.
They would be from major manufacturers of 2.5" hard drives (Maxtor is not one of them, though Seagate, which owns Maxtor, is). The choice by Microsoft and Sony would be which ones were lower cost to buy.

Yet another "musical Maxtor."
Head stiction to the platter, which is causing the motor to resonate at frequencies as the servo tries to spin the platters up but can't since they are jammed.

BTW, Maxtor sucks.
Watcher3223 4 years ago 3
Yeah Maxtor does suck. I bought 5 hard-drives from them and they broke within a few months.

Probably because you got a DiamondMax 8 series, instead of a DiamondMax 9!
The slim ones, known as DiamondMax 8, become slow and fail.

is there a way to fix this?
mikede420 4 years ago
sometimes getting a rubber mallet and slightly hitting the sides of the hard drive getting to spin sometimes it does not help if the bearing is out.
tyleralan11 4 years ago
thanks! i have the hard drive hook up to a external drive. should i leave it in that or put it in the computer? which do you think would be the best way for it to read?

i would put it in the external case, i did that it worked for me!
