The best way to protect the tyre from overspray is to wipe it with used oil or washing up liquid before you start and the over spray just washes off.

One thing that I've seen that works is to take several 3x5 cars and tuck them in behind the lip of the rim in front of the tire. Then if you need more protection than that you can tape some newspaper on the outside edge of the note cards
