LH was like a second Ali he was Alis sparring partner for 3-4 years Holmes had the best teacher you could get ...He did have some bum of the month defenses, but so did louis marciano dempsey and even ali.
Larry Holmes was never an asshole ,He was an honest fighter who never went out in the ring and showboated and acted like an idiot like alot of fighters did.He earned hs money and spent it wisely and took care of his family. And he's still spending that same money today. And you think he's an asshole? I call that a Man.And that speech was his ,It was his time to say what he wanted. He told the truth. Now when is that a crime?
Well said! This man used his money wisely while the rest of these black athletes waste money on cars that they can't pay for, homes they can't afford and you wonder why the national media makes fun of some of these athletes.
Also the is the punch factor. Marciano could hit. But he never had to aim so high as with Ali or Holmes. Ali could take any punch from any heavyweight ever. It's a simple fact. And he was smart. If Marciano caught him, he would brilliantly cover and tie the little guy up so much it would be comical. Holmes also had this skill as proven with Shaver and others. Maricano's best fight would be with a guy like Tyson. And I give it to the Rock by KO. We all saw Tyson's heart was never strong enough.
Larry was never very bright with a mic in his face or in his ability to express himself. But as a Champ he earned his place in history. And all this Jibber- Jabber about Marciano vs Holmes? Well, Rock was great in his style and toughness. But he defended only 6 times. But boxers like Walcott gave him his most troublesome fights. He never fought "anyone" to the skill level, or size of Ali or Holmes. I doubt Rocky would fall. But there would be a stoppage of a battered and cut Marciano by 8 or 9.
@Ghstwn Right. Holmes is probably in the top 10 of greatest heavyweights. His jab was strong, not quite as fast as Ali's but strong. I'd personally rank Ali one, Joe Louis 2 and from there on it would be hard to judge. I'd say Holmes is no. 9 or 10. Tyson around 8 or 9. Frazier and Foreman from 4-7
@thegreat144000 : Yes, he's a little obsessed. He speaks his mind, with no fudging. A lot of it is humor, too. I respect Holmes because he defended his title 20 times, not playing games like most do to avoid the toughest challengers.
If you listen to Foreman, it's clear his comeback was for money (for himself or charity, not sure). Knowing that, if he had lost to Holmes early on, his comeback would have ended right there. The way he did it, he had several fights and stretched it out.
Larry is jealous to this day of Big George. Foreman did back out of the fight, due to not getting paid his purse on time, so it is debatable that he was "afraid" of Holmes. I doubt it. Foreman got into the ring with ALL of the greats, boxers with real knockout power, Holmes never really had, he won his fights by decision. He clinched and held a hellva lot too. Holmes was lucky to arrive on the scene when he did, too late for the greats, and just before Mike Tyson. Allot of mediocre fighters.
Larry Holmes is a man who fought for scraps, $100 fights. One year he had 8 fights, and only made 800 dollars! When you can belive in youirself and rise aboue those odds, he has the right to talk smack!. And he was right, George Foreman did not want to fight him.
Holmes was the biggest competitor of all time... say what you want, he fought everyone they brought to him- some of them he didn't want to fight, not because he was scared, but like Marvis Frazier and Ali, he didn't want to hurt them. But this was a little classless.... but he earned the right to say it for his accomplishments and we must take note!
Wow, I used to respect Holmes, I mean, you can slag off fighters if your going to fight them, but Foreman has done so much, won at 45, beat Frazier, Norton, etc. And Holmes gives him no respect. Shameful.
How about instead of talking shit on a fight that didn't happen, you keep your dignity by not being a loudmouth ass, Larry? You're an amazing boxer, no one denies that, but using your induction speech to talk smack on a staple sportsman of the ring?
@n3wbr33d911 I like Big George, but I agree. Holmes would've slaughtered Foreman. Jab, jab, jab...Foreman gets frustrated, starts throwing wild punches...Holmes throws series of rights...lights out...fight's over.
@Godzilla370 Foreman is very powerful, but Foreman stands up and moves forward. Holmes would dance, jab and find that right moment to land shots. Classic boxer vs. brawler. My money is on the boxer.
One of the greatest champions in any weight speaking. He would of beat foreman aswell, George could punch but he couldn't box to save his life, Holmes on the over hand had one of the best jabs ever. Holmes late tko or unanimous decision.
Its stupid that Larry Holmes is saying Tommy Morrison kicked George Foreman's butt.
Honestly, that was an old George Foreman. Prime George would've KOd Tommy within 2 rounds. And then he says Shannon Briggs kicked his ass. That's bullshit. George slammed Briggs in that fight. If anyone watches the fight, they'll know it.
I never liked Larry when he was champ. I hated him. Now, after all these years and after listening to this clip of him I respect the heck outa him for his honesty!
Holmes, like him or hate him is a great champion. But he said the wrong things all the time. He had a kind of arrogance that made people hate him. But of course, he should have thought better than to say whatever he feel like...
Larry never gave up his bitterness or jealousy - really sad because he basically said all these good things, then couldn't resist letting his ASS show through at the end.
I loved Larry and a big fan, but Foreman would have knocked Larry out when younger or older.
"Its great to have my name on the record. But we all know Larry Holmes was a legendary fighter and if he was at his best, I wouldn't have stood a chance. He was a great fighter" - Mike Tyson, after beating a 38 year old Larry Holmes.
Everybody knows in his PRIME Big George would've knocked Larry Holmes out. Why because Larry Holmes would've rushed in and got cleaned UP!!! EVERY fighter that has tried to go toe to toe with George Forman has LOST, and I mean knocked the FUCK OUT!! 68 KO's ISN"T FAKE!!! It sounds crazy but it's real. With all due respect to Brotha Holmes and every body else for that matter the result would be in George Foreman's favor.
@SIRTURF I agree. Foreman was awesome. He would knock holmes out. Holmes was very good but i don`t think he quite had the elusiveness of Ali and this would enable big george to land some big shots on holmes. George hit "as hard" if not harder than tyson with a longer reach. I totally agree with this SIRTURF
Larry Holmes has Nothing but class. My favorite fighter of All times is Muhammad Ali. The best Heavyweight that ever lived is Larry Holmes. I also LOVE the fact that he's still a Multi-Millionaire. He never went to Hollywood (Tyson, Holyfield, Leonard) and made Movies and all that crap. Stayed right in Easton, Pa. and lived a quiet, humble life and saved his money. Now who says Black Athletes are ALL going to go broke. Larry You are the Man!!
@doocieonu Are you crazy. Marciano is now officially listed as a cruiserweight. He fought 22 men that were former middleweights. HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP RANKINGS: 1. Larry Holmes 2. Muhammad Ali 3. Joe Louis 4. Lennox Lewis 5.George Foreman 6. Joe Frazier 7. Evander Holyfield 8. Mike Tyson 9. Sonny Liston 10. Gene Tunney
Great fighter but what an asshole. I can understand why he's bitter due to always being in the shadow of Ali, the greatest heavyweight of all time (with the possible exception of Louis) but damn, get over it Larry and people will respect you more.
Larry is so worried about his legacy being underestimated and overshadowed by others (mainly Ali), but personality and character does have an impact on how fighters are rated. Do you think Ali would be rated so highly as a fighter among critics and the public if he was a mute and stayed out of the public eye? I doubt it. Holmes is one of the best HW ever, but he would be ranked much higher on any list if he wasnt such a grim asshole.
I agree, classic Larry Holmes. Crass, inspiring, funny, caustic, unguarded, a bit over-the-top, and truly one-of-a-kind. He could've chosen to be a preacher, he has the gospel church cadence, timing, tension and resolution-- exhilarating and musical. Yea, he went overboard a bit criticizing Tyson, Holyfield, Ed McMahon(!), and most of all, Foreman. But that's always been Larry. And ever notice that he's quite intelligent, worldly, well-grounded and stable? I love Larry Holmes.
yall surprised? this is classic larry holmes. Using your hall of fame speech to bash other legends, including the one that made your punk ass who you are today, and i know yall know im talking about "THE GREATEST." Larry Holmes was always an asshole. You beat an Ali that was off for 2 years, an Ali that was a shell of himself when you fought him. You talking shit about tyson and holyfield, but YOU LOST TO THEM BOTH. If i was holmes i wouldnt even bring up tyson. Anyone remember 1988?
Disappointing to hear him glorifying himself the whole time! I lost my respect for him today! Sad but true! You dont get bigger by putting other people down Larry!
@wheatbull he came out of retirement to fight a prime mike tyson, and receive his first true loss. he didnt duck him. everyone loses. haters gonna hate.
@wade2bosh Come ON ! I don't hate Larry Holmes ! When he beat Ray Mecer,I rooted hard for him to Beat Holyfeild ! but he he talks trash like this it disappoints me and stil think he had the best left jab of the heavyweights !
@JMatos95 io am sure THAT bothered him ....jesus christ man this guy was one of the best heavyweights who ever walked the planet a MAN amongst men.......this guy carried the heavyweights because after ali who else was there..... fuckin no one thats who......
Holmes is bitter, greedy, and jealous man. Very jealous indeed. He's proof that money doesn't make happiness. I hope his family loves him despite these glaring flaws. But he will die a bitter and jealous man.
@tlig He was not a respected champ......for good reason....He was avery average boxer...he fought no one of significance....until Witherspoon spanked him....Larry got an early Christmas...The Mike Spinks embarrased his fat ass twice,,,as a heavyweight he's a fuckin zero
WHO DID LARRY HOLMES BEAT? NORTON, SHAVERS...ALIII.. DEY WER PAST THEIR BEST AND SURE HOLMES WAS A GUD FIGHTER REGARDLES BUT DRAWS NO COMPARISON!
FOREMAN WOULDV SPLATERED HIS UGLY ASS OUTA THE FKIN MAP! TLKING BOUT HOW BAD HE FINKS HE IS! NO WAY IN HELL IS HOLMES BETTER THAN FOREMAN, FRAZIER OR TYSON N ALI WAS BETTER THAN THESE FIGHTERS.. TYSON GAVE HOLMES D SME TREATMENT HE GAVE ALI. DIFFERENCE WAS ALI DIDNT GO DOWN CAZ ALIS HEART KNOWS NO LIMITS!
who the fuck is Larry Holmes? Who is he to call Big George a phoney?
This motherfucker fought BUMS! Fighting a diseased Ali is proving nothing! He couldn knock out a 39 year old slow as hell version of ALI, but he was knocked the fuck out at age 38 against Mike Tyson.
Larry Holmes is an intelligent, intelligent man and all time great fighter no doubt about that. I like the fact that Larry was a business man outside of the ring. It was said that Larry once own half of Easton Pennsylvania, a reference to him owning a lot of business in Easton PA. I admire Larry and respect him. He was right about what he said about Marciano "not being able to carry his jockstrap". He is right about it and Marciano couldn't beat those fighters of the 70's.
@jesusneverexisted300 I THINK THAT MARCIANO WOULD KO NORTON( KENNY WAS GREAT AGAINST BOXERS BUT HE WAS PATHETIC AGAINST HARD PUNCHERS) MARCIANO WOULD BEAT THE TOMATO CAN COONEY FOR SURE, ROCKY HAD GREAT STAMINA,DETERMINATION,HEART, STRENGTH, HITTING POWER,GREAT CHIN, MARCIANO MIGHT WELL BEAT LARRY HOLMES, IF PAST PRIME NORTON GAVE THE HELL TO`PRIME LARRY, IMAGINES WHAT WOULD DO MARCIANO TO LARRY.BUT DEFINITELY ROCKY WOULD LOSE AGAINST ALI66,FOREMAN73,LISTON60 AND JOE FRAZIER71
@combatesdeboxeo I think Marciano would stop Norton late...I don't know if he could beat Frazier, but I do know it may well be the bloodiest fantasy fight in history! I don't think he could beat Holmes buy any stretch of the imagination either...Holmes would beat him worse than Ali! Rocky was horribly overrated, like Tyson, IMHO
@XionComrade marciano would absolutely destroy norton and he would fight a war with frazier, i pick smokin by sd. and in my opinion rocky(and frazier) had the perfect style to beat to holmes. rocky did pressure during all fight, he was much more durable than norton, much harder puncher, he had better chin, more heart, more stamina, and he was a great finisher... in my mind the rock would win by late ko or tko. of course larry would give him a fight
@combatesdeboxeo I see where your coming from, good note on Frazier and Marciano being perfect to get Holmes out of their! Holmes had more "Fight" and brawl in him than Ali, not saying one was better than the other, I personally think they were even, but trying to fight Frazier would be his end, Ill have to watch more Marciano to give a good saying on that though...Rocky was a tank, and he would fight toe to toe with Norton, I don't think Norton could get rid of him, but I know Rocky could...
@XionComrade Get rid of Norton, his trainer believed he hit even harder than Foreman, which I doubt, but he certainly had better stamina even if he wasn't as aggressive a puncher...Norton and Shavers gave hell to Ali too, I think Shavers gave Ali a better run than he gave Holmes even! I haven't seen the fight, but apparently Holmes thoroughly dominated Carl Williams, and beat Witherspoon pretty bad too...Beat the crap out of Berbick on the scores also...But I can see anyone ducking....
What great fighter did Larry Holmes beat when THEY were in their prime? Nobody. Shavers, Norton, Ali etc...they were all past their prime. I do think Holmes was a great fighter, but you have to beat them all to be considered the best. Only Ali beat them all, and he beat them all. Ali was past his prime and still beating some of the greatest fighters of all time.
@BigTimePride I AGREE ABSOLUTELY. HOLMES NEVER DID BEAT A PRIME LEGEND, HE DID BEAT PAST PRIME SHAVERS.PAST PRIME NORTON, AND TOMATO CANS AS BERBICK, SMITH, WEAVER,COONEY AND ALL THEM GAVE TO HOLMES THE HELL. HOLMES DID SEVERAL DEFENSES OF HIS BELT BECAUSE HE FACED TOMATO CANS, AND HE AVOIDED JIMMY YOUNG AND RON LYLE. HE WAS A GOOD BOXER BUT HE NEVER DID BEAT NOBODY
@Midnightrambler3760 foreman destroyed joe frazier,PRIME norton(IN 2 ROUNDS, PAST PRIME NORTON GAVE TO PRIME HOLMES THE BIGGEST HELL OF HIS LIFE)), michael moorer(who did beat holyfield), george chuvalo, goyo peralta ( cheks his record before the fight against george)OLD FOREMAN DESTROYED COONEY IN 2 ROUNDS LIKE GARBAGE. FOREMAN HAD BALLS TO FACE RON LYLE AND JIMMY YOUNG. LARRY HOLMES AVOIDED BOTH.
GEORGE FOREMAN WAS,IS AND HE WILL BE BETTER THAN HOLMES EVER!!!
@combatesdeboxeo Earnie Shavers KOed prime Norton in less than one round, and I would argue that he crushed his career then. Holmes gave Shavers the greatest hell of his career. Styles make fighters, and I think Holmes could take post Ali Foreman, but not prime George, I don't think Ali would have won the rematch either!
I don't know about Cooney-Frazier, its a interesting thought because Cooney was awkward and had a huge heart, not to mention that left hook! The most powerful I have ever seen.
@XionComrade i agree absolutely, holmes would beat foreman 76-77 by ud, but prime 73 foreman would absolutely destroy holmes.
but man... are you joking? we are talking on joe frazier... cooney was a decent fighter but no way he would beat frazier, prime foreman knocked down frazier "2500"times, old foreman destroyed gerry cooney in the second knock down.
frazier had much more stamina, more heart,BETTER CHIN,he did pressure during all fight and joe had better left hook too.
@combatesdeboxeo I agree now, Cooney would get raped by Joe Frazier, probably wouldn't one hit Gerry either like George did, it would be a bloody scary mess, he has nothing to use against Joe, his left hook is unreal hard but that is all he has, and he leaves himself open when he throws it, Open for Frazier's bullet of a right hook, would go much like the Frazier-Foster fight. I think Cooney's hook was "Better", but it wouldn't be near enough, it was shorter and more powerful, but Cooney...
@XionComrade ... Just doesn't have the skill or speed to land it and get away, If he catches Frazier flush he can win but Frazier can one hit Cooney. Frazier wins 8 out of 10 fights IMO.
@XionComrade foreman was MUCH harder puncher than cooney, gerry cooney had a glass chin, we are talking prime vs prime, and still i am not sure if cooney 80 might beat joe frazier 75. of course joe frazier 1970-71 would rape cooney 80. frazier would take him late, because frazier was stronger tale
@combatesdeboxeo I agree,it was late last night my brain wasn't working right, George was a crushing CRUSHING puncher compared to ANYONE from the 80s and 90s, makes Razor, Bonecrusher, and Tyson look like heavy handed middleweights(No joke) Why don't they ever test George's punch officially? on fight science the hardest blow ever was Rampage's hook, harder than any kick I think, and George hits at least 3x harder...professionalism is not with those guys
No way is size even a factor with Frazier-Cooney, look at how Foreman was built, now look at how Cooney was built...Doesn't matter if Cooney is 8 feet tall, he is not strong enough, fast enough, or skilled enough to keep Frazier away. And he only has the one left hook, so he sure as hell cannot punch anything like Foreman could, who could throw shots from the strangest angles...He couldn't take a punch, which George of course could, he had worse stamina too....
@Midnightrambler3760 Remember though that Cooney's ONLY knockout blow is the left hook, watch him throw it, it is Short and low always, it's not a long shot. This negates his long reach since his jab is just shit and Frazier is constantly moving inside. Every shot that George had was a knockout blow, Cooney only had one way of KOing a good fighter, I don't see how it is possible with his horrible chin and work ethic in the ring(He got fucking rocked by Michael Spinks >.<)
@Midnightrambler3760 cooney was much bigger than foreman? cooney was just taller than foreman, foreman wa smuch stronger and much harder puncher, george had a solid chin, cooney had the chin of a baby. prime cooney was 6´6 and 220-225 pounds
(after of ali) foreman 74-77 was 6´4 and 224-2311/2 pounds .
@combatesdeboxeo even cooney weighed 207-208 pounds when he did start his career, he was tall but but he was a fucking Scrawny, he was a weak kid compared with george foreman, the arm of cooney was pathetic, the biceps of george did look like a bodybuilder
@Midnightrambler3760 Di you believe everything "experts" say? Cooney was a product of the medias, he wasnt even a top fighter. And holmes didnt fight young when young beat up guys like foremen in 1977.
Muhammad Ali beat more champions and top contenders than any heavyweight champion in history. He defeated heavyweight kings Sonny Liston (twice), Floyd Patterson (twice), Ernie Terrell, Jimmy Ellis, 'Ken Norton' (twice), Joe Frazier (twice), George Foreman and Leon Spinks.
Ali defeated light-heavyweight champs Archie Moore and Bob Foster. Ali defeated European Heavyweight Champions Henry Cooper, Karl Mildenberger, Jurgin Blin, Joe Bugner, Richard Dunn, Jean-Pierre Coopman and Alfredo Evangelista. He defeated British king Brian London.Ali beat undefeated fighters Sonny Banks (12-0), Billy Daniels (16-0), Rudi Lubbers (21-0) and George Foreman (40-0).
Larry Holmes must be the worst sportsman in sports history...He never has a nice thing to say about anybody....A young Ali would have knocked out Larry Holmes no problem at all...
@Midnightrambler3760 Ali was 6 ft 3 in the same size as Larry was...Please view the Ali vs Williams fight then tell me Ali was to small...Al young Ali would have knocked out a Larry Holmes no problem at all....
@Midnightrambler3760 Yes,Larry had a great jab, however Ali`s weight of 210 would have been the very reason Larry would loose.."your hands can`t hit what your eyes can`t see" Ali would have been too fast .Larry would have been big and slow next to a 210 lb Ali I recall a small light Renaldo Snipes almost killed Larry and a small Shavers almost took Larry head off and what about a small old Norton.went toe to toe for 15 rd.. what about Mike Spinks?? he beat Larry at 199 lb
@bigmace1000 Snipes landed a few good punches against a 31 year old Holmes but his accomplisments in that fight have been greatly exaggerated, he was soundly defeated in spite of the biased commentary.
Shavers landed a good shot but you also fogert that Holmes won that fight 120-108, 120-108, 119-109, a virtual shut out.
Spinks beat a 35 and a 36 year old Holmes. Do you want to mention Berbick beating Ali?
I do recall Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper knocking a young Ali on his ass.
@Midnightrambler3760 You make a great point regarding the Snipes commentary,it may have been one of the most bias of all time.
Yes, Larry put a beating on Shavers and I may have been pushing it regarding Spinks, as Larry was well past his prime. however the question then is when was Larry in his prime? what was his best fight? or what age? the reason I would like you to advise on the above is I had many debates regarding Larry and Ali and I`ve never had someone use weight as a way of theory
@bigmace1000 There is more to it than weight but weight is definitely a big part of it. Most of the guys pre-ban Ali fought were smaller than him, Liston was an exception but his style was well suited for Ali.
Holmes was the first man Ali's size who would be content to stay outside and stick his jab all night. Holmes had a great jab and a great jab is the one thing that upsets speed.
Cooper was 22 lbs ligher than Ali when he knocked him down.
the best ali was 214 1/2 pounds against Chuvalo, and he was 212 pounds against Cleveland Williams. IN 1966 ( ALI WAS 24). IN 1971 ALI WAS 29, HE WEIGHED 215 POUNDS AGAINST FRAZIER,221 AGAINST ELLIS,227 AGAINST MATHIS
IN 1973 Larry Holmes was 24 years old, and he weighed among 196 and 204 pounds. in 1978 Holmes(29) weighed 209 pounds against Norton. He weighed 210 against Shavers, he weighed 211 against ALI.
PRIME LARRY HOLMES HAD THE SAME SIZE THAN ALI, AND STILL ALI WAS 2 POUNDS HEAVIER
@Midnightrambler3760 I NEVER SAID " ALI WAS IN HIS PRIME WHEN HE FOUGHT FRAZIER" but stil joe frazier had a bad style for PRIME ali and PRIME holmes, I THINK JOE FRAZIER IN HIS PRIME WOULD BEAT HOLMES 2 /3 FIGHTS.
ALI FACED SONNY LISTON, ALI FACED GEORGE FOREMAN, THESE GUYS ARE THE STRONGEST BOXERS EVER.
@combatesdeboxeo Frazier had a bad style for a post prime Ali. I think a prime Ali and a prime Holmes defeat Frazier easily. I think frazier is one of the moet overrated heavyweights in history.
@combatesdeboxeo Ali did face Sonny Liston but an already fading Sonny Liston who was probably 4 years past his prime and was reportedly not even training any more. He had fought a total of 3 rounds in the 3 years prior to Ali.
Larry Holmes would have jabbed Frazier's face off. Frazier went to the death with a much faded Ali. Even a prime Ali would have schooled Frazier.
@Midnightrambler3760 I agree that a great jab is one way to deal with speed fighter & you are correct Holmes had a great jab. However, Ali's jab was second to none and Ali faster than Holmes. Now what? Ali beat more top champions, top contenders and undefeated fighters than Holmes. I'd be willing to be Holmes wouldn't have lasted 5 rounds with a prime George Foreman. Styles make fights but there was only one guy who could beat them all.....ALI
@BigTimePride I think you completely underestimate the Larry Holmes jab. Holmes took out many guys with a jab and not a right hand. You are also neglecting to consider Holmes had a 3" reach advantage.
As for Foreman, he was a bully and would not have gotten close to a prime Holmes.
@bigmace1000 Don't get me wrong, I think Ali was brilliant and Holmes learned much from Ali. if there had been no Muhammad Ali there would have been no Larry Holmes.
That is why it is hard to compare different eras. I would love to see a fight with them in their primes but as you know it will never happen.
But based on Holmes' size and his ability to jab I think he would have given Ali fits.
@Midnightrambler3760 ali was not in his prime against cooper (1963) and cooper had a diferent style than holmes. you are talking nonsense again. styles make fights, according your theory foreman would kill ali, because norton and frazier dominated ali 70s, but george killed these guys. every fight is diferent, i can say PAST PRIME norton gave the hell to PRIME holmes.
@combatesdeboxeo I believe the era of Foreman/Norton/Frazier is the most overated era in HW boxing history. They were average fighters who made their careers on going a collective 2-5 against a faded Ali.
A prime Ali wipes the floor with all of them, so does a prime Holmes.
foreman destroyed frazier and prime norton in 2 rounds, he did beat chuvalo, goyo peralta, ron lyle.. past prime norton gave to prime holmes the hell, joe frazier dominated holmes always(they were sparring partners, and past prime joe broke to prime holmes 2 ribs).7larry holmes did "defend" his belt against tomato cans as weaver, witherspoon, smith, berbick, past prime norton, past prime shavers, gerry cooney... and all them gave the hell to the best holmes.holmes avoided young and lyle
@Midnightrambler3760 OLD FOREMAN CHALLENGED TYSON 1500 TIMES, BUT TYSON WANTED NO PART OF FOREMAN. TYSON FACED HOLMES WHO WAS A WEAK KID COMPARED WITH FOREMAN
"If you need a goat to blame for never seeing Foreman-Holmes, blame Holmes’ management and Don King for doing the right thing by Holmes, because Larry Holmes was nowhere close to being ready for George Foreman in 1976, despite Clancy messing Foreman up. "
@Midnightrambler3760 In a head to head matchup between Frazier and Holmes at their peak, most observers are split on who would have won. Holmes is usually ranked above Frazier because of the 20 consecutive title defenses he made over his seven year reign as champ. That leaves Foreman. Because of the power Foreman still possessed during his comeback, which resulted in some impressive knockouts, not to mention that he won the title from the lineal champ and Holmes didn't,
@Midnightrambler3760 Foreman's comeback is viewed as being more successful than Holmes’ was. That’s why Holmes wants the Foreman name on his record. He believes since Foreman is only 11 months older than he is, beating him now means he would have beat him when both were at their peak
@Midnightrambler3760 Who would have won had they fought at their best? The best Foreman was the one who fought from late 1972 through October 1974 when he lost to Ali. The best Holmes fought during the years 1979-82. In my opinion, the undefeated Foreman of ‘73-‘74 would have beaten the undefeated Holmes of ‘80-‘82. I don't believe Holmes could have survived the Foreman that Muhammad Ali survived
holmes was brilliant,he would have boxed foreman silly
HENRYHOBBS1 2 weeks ago
LH was like a second Ali he was Alis sparring partner for 3-4 years Holmes had the best teacher you could get ...He did have some bum of the month defenses, but so did louis marciano dempsey and even ali.

holmes biggest fight in his carrera withe coony !!!! he didnt
fight like sonny liston or patterson or frazier or forman
and the important thing holmes when he beat norton was 1979
norton was old and one juge give the fight to norton won and holmes
face all blood
so norton in 1973 can beat holmes easy
liston , forman , norton 1973 , ali befor 1975 and ali 60s all
all that guy can beat holmes easly

Also the is the punch factor. Marciano could hit. But he never had to aim so high as with Ali or Holmes. Ali could take any punch from any heavyweight ever. It's a simple fact. And he was smart. If Marciano caught him, he would brilliantly cover and tie the little guy up so much it would be comical. Holmes also had this skill as proven with Shaver and others. Maricano's best fight would be with a guy like Tyson. And I give it to the Rock by KO. We all saw Tyson's heart was never strong enough.

Ghstwn 5 months ago
@Ghstwn Right. Holmes is probably in the top 10 of greatest heavyweights. His jab was strong, not quite as fast as Ali's but strong. I'd personally rank Ali one, Joe Louis 2 and from there on it would be hard to judge. I'd say Holmes is no. 9 or 10. Tyson around 8 or 9. Frazier and Foreman from 4-7

wait, you think this is some kind of cook up for a holmes- foreman showdown??? nonsense.

@thegreat144000 : Yes, he's a little obsessed. He speaks his mind, with no fudging. A lot of it is humor, too. I respect Holmes because he defended his title 20 times, not playing games like most do to avoid the toughest challengers.

fillygirl93 5 months ago
Larry is jealous to this day of Big George. Foreman did back out of the fight, due to not getting paid his purse on time, so it is debatable that he was "afraid" of Holmes. I doubt it. Foreman got into the ring with ALL of the greats, boxers with real knockout power, Holmes never really had, he won his fights by decision. He clinched and held a hellva lot too. Holmes was lucky to arrive on the scene when he did, too late for the greats, and just before Mike Tyson. Allot of mediocre fighters.

Rocky not only would have beaten him he would have beat the spit off of him and he was the man with more class.

holmes is a bitter man.. it's obvious, everytime he talks it's larry holmes is this larry holmes is that his head is so far up his own ass!
28rampage 6 months ago
Larry Holmes is a man who fought for scraps, $100 fights. One year he had 8 fights, and only made 800 dollars! When you can belive in youirself and rise aboue those odds, he has the right to talk smack!. And he was right, George Foreman did not want to fight him.
hyp4solutions 6 months ago
Holmes was the biggest competitor of all time... say what you want, he fought everyone they brought to him- some of them he didn't want to fight, not because he was scared, but like Marvis Frazier and Ali, he didn't want to hurt them. But this was a little classless.... but he earned the right to say it for his accomplishments and we must take note!
MegaYouri13 6 months ago
I thought Larry Holmes gave a great talk. He should do stand up comedy. He's fast on his feet. Don't be so serious.
bogglerful 6 months ago
Wow, I used to respect Holmes, I mean, you can slag off fighters if your going to fight them, but Foreman has done so much, won at 45, beat Frazier, Norton, etc. And Holmes gives him no respect. Shameful.

this was the best speech I ever heard. Loved it.

How about instead of talking shit on a fight that didn't happen, you keep your dignity by not being a loudmouth ass, Larry? You're an amazing boxer, no one denies that, but using your induction speech to talk smack on a staple sportsman of the ring?
Classless.

@n3wbr33d911 I like Big George, but I agree. Holmes would've slaughtered Foreman. Jab, jab, jab...Foreman gets frustrated, starts throwing wild punches...Holmes throws series of rights...lights out...fight's over.

@arkansoul foreman is too powerful
Godzilla370 6 months ago

Larry never gave up his bitterness or jealousy - really sad because he basically said all these good things, then couldn't resist letting his ASS show through at the end.

SIRTURF 11 months ago 8
@SIRTURF
I disagree! Holmes would have beaten Foreman just like the way Jimmy Young beat George.
ChampCarforlife 3 months ago
@SIRTURF I agree. Foreman was awesome. He would knock holmes out. Holmes was very good but i don`t think he quite had the elusiveness of Ali and this would enable big george to land some big shots on holmes. George hit "as hard" if not harder than tyson with a longer reach. I totally agree with this SIRTURF
bartonmcgill 3 weeks ago
@bartonmcgill Holmes would have dominated Foreman with his jab. Holmes also had an amazing chin.
Foreman would have had both eyes closed by round 6 and gassed out as usual.
Foreman wanted no part of holmes, neither did Ali.
Midnightrambler3760 3 weeks ago
@Midnightrambler3760 If Ali wanted no part of Holmes then why did he fight him when he knew he was getting past it? Thats bulls...t

Midnightrambler3760 3 weeks ago
@bartonmcgill Yes George hit hard but he was slow. Wht good did Foreman's power do against Ali?
Holmes would have taken foreman apart with his jab.

Maryjaneslave 1 year ago
I agree, classic Larry Holmes. Crass, inspiring, funny, caustic, unguarded, a bit over-the-top, and truly one-of-a-kind. He could've chosen to be a preacher, he has the gospel church cadence, timing, tension and resolution-- exhilarating and musical. Yea, he went overboard a bit criticizing Tyson, Holyfield, Ed McMahon(!), and most of all, Foreman. But that's always been Larry. And ever notice that he's quite intelligent, worldly, well-grounded and stable? I love Larry Holmes.

larry holmes is seriously overrated

Larry Holmes is an intelligent, intelligent man and all time great fighter no doubt about that. I like the fact that Larry was a business man outside of the ring. It was said that Larry once own half of Easton Pennsylvania, a reference to him owning a lot of business in Easton PA. I admire Larry and respect him. He was right about what he said about Marciano "not being able to carry his jockstrap". He is right about it and Marciano couldn't beat those fighters of the 70's.
jesusneverexisted300 1 year ago
@jesusneverexisted300 I THINK THAT MARCIANO WOULD KO NORTON( KENNY WAS GREAT AGAINST BOXERS BUT HE WAS PATHETIC AGAINST HARD PUNCHERS) MARCIANO WOULD BEAT THE TOMATO CAN COONEY FOR SURE, ROCKY HAD GREAT STAMINA,DETERMINATION,HEART, STRENGTH, HITTING POWER,GREAT CHIN, MARCIANO MIGHT WELL BEAT LARRY HOLMES, IF PAST PRIME NORTON GAVE THE HELL TO`PRIME LARRY, IMAGINES WHAT WOULD DO MARCIANO TO LARRY.BUT DEFINITELY ROCKY WOULD LOSE AGAINST ALI66,FOREMAN73,LISTON60 AND JOE FRAZIER71
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo I think Marciano would stop Norton late...I don't know if he could beat Frazier, but I do know it may well be the bloodiest fantasy fight in history! I don't think he could beat Holmes buy any stretch of the imagination either...Holmes would beat him worse than Ali! Rocky was horribly overrated, like Tyson, IMHO
XionComrade 1 year ago
@XionComrade marciano would absolutely destroy norton and he would fight a war with frazier, i pick smokin by sd. and in my opinion rocky(and frazier) had the perfect style to beat to holmes. rocky did pressure during all fight, he was much more durable than norton, much harder puncher, he had better chin, more heart, more stamina, and he was a great finisher... in my mind the rock would win by late ko or tko. of course larry would give him a fight
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo I see where your coming from, good note on Frazier and Marciano being perfect to get Holmes out of their! Holmes had more "Fight" and brawl in him than Ali, not saying one was better than the other, I personally think they were even, but trying to fight Frazier would be his end, Ill have to watch more Marciano to give a good saying on that though...Rocky was a tank, and he would fight toe to toe with Norton, I don't think Norton could get rid of him, but I know Rocky could...
XionComrade 1 year ago

Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
GEORGE FOREMAN WAS,IS AND HE WILL BE BETTER THAN HOLMES EVER!!!
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Earnie Shavers KOed prime Norton in less than one round, and I would argue that he crushed his career then. Holmes gave Shavers the greatest hell of his career. Styles make fighters, and I think Holmes could take post Ali Foreman, but not prime George, I don't think Ali would have won the rematch either!
I don't know about Cooney-Frazier, its a interesting thought because Cooney was awkward and had a huge heart, not to mention that left hook! The most powerful I have ever seen.
XionComrade 1 year ago
@XionComrade i agree absolutely, holmes would beat foreman 76-77 by ud, but prime 73 foreman would absolutely destroy holmes.
but man... are you joking? we are talking on joe frazier... cooney was a decent fighter but no way he would beat frazier, prime foreman knocked down frazier "2500"times, old foreman destroyed gerry cooney in the second knock down.
frazier had much more stamina, more heart,BETTER CHIN,he did pressure during all fight and joe had better left hook too.
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo I agree now, Cooney would get raped by Joe Frazier, probably wouldn't one hit Gerry either like George did, it would be a bloody scary mess, he has nothing to use against Joe, his left hook is unreal hard but that is all he has, and he leaves himself open when he throws it, Open for Frazier's bullet of a right hook, would go much like the Frazier-Foster fight. I think Cooney's hook was "Better", but it wouldn't be near enough, it was shorter and more powerful, but Cooney...
XionComrade 1 year ago
@XionComrade ... Just doesn't have the skill or speed to land it and get away, If he catches Frazier flush he can win but Frazier can one hit Cooney. Frazier wins 8 out of 10 fights IMO.
XionComrade 1 year ago
@XionComrade foreman was MUCH harder puncher than cooney, gerry cooney had a glass chin, we are talking prime vs prime, and still i am not sure if cooney 80 might beat joe frazier 75. of course joe frazier 1970-71 would rape cooney 80. frazier would take him late, because frazier was stronger tale
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo I agree,it was late last night my brain wasn't working right, George was a crushing CRUSHING puncher compared to ANYONE from the 80s and 90s, makes Razor, Bonecrusher, and Tyson look like heavy handed middleweights(No joke) Why don't they ever test George's punch officially? on fight science the hardest blow ever was Rampage's hook, harder than any kick I think, and George hits at least 3x harder...professionalism is not with those guys
XionComrade 1 year ago
@XionComrade Ernie shavers hit harder than foreman.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 I know :P
XionComrade 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Jimmy Young was on a 5/6 fight losing streak when Holmes became champion. Why would he fight him?
You call Cooney a tomato can but you totally forget that Cooner was a heavy favorite going in and the boxing experts said he would destroy Holmes.
Cooney would have destroyed Joe Frazier.

Cooney had 8" in height and an 11" reach advantage. he was just too big for Frazier, no contest...early KO.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 Remember though that Cooney's ONLY knockout blow is the left hook, watch him throw it, it is Short and low always, it's not a long shot. This negates his long reach since his jab is just shit and Frazier is constantly moving inside. Every shot that George had was a knockout blow, Cooney only had one way of KOing a good fighter, I don't see how it is possible with his horrible chin and work ethic in the ring(He got fucking rocked by Michael Spinks >.<)

bigmace1000 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 Holmes was used to fighting much heavier guys and Ali at 200-210 pounds would have been too small.
Also, Ali liked to stick and move and he would have been trying to stick Holmes, who had an incredible jab and also a 1" reach advantage.
It is quite simple, young Ali was just too small for a prime Holmes.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 Yes,Larry had a great jab, however Ali`s weight of 210 would have been the very reason Larry would loose.."your hands can`t hit what your eyes can`t see" Ali would have been too fast .Larry would have been big and slow next to a 210 lb Ali I recall a small light Renaldo Snipes almost killed Larry and a small Shavers almost took Larry head off and what about a small old Norton.went toe to toe for 15 rd.. what about Mike Spinks?? he beat Larry at 199 lb
bigmace1000 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 Snipes landed a few good punches against a 31 year old Holmes but his accomplisments in that fight have been greatly exaggerated, he was soundly defeated in spite of the biased commentary.
Shavers landed a good shot but you also fogert that Holmes won that fight 120-108, 120-108, 119-109, a virtual shut out.
Spinks beat a 35 and a 36 year old Holmes. Do you want to mention Berbick beating Ali?
I do recall Sonny Banks and Henry Cooper knocking a young Ali on his ass.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 You make a great point regarding the Snipes commentary,it may have been one of the most bias of all time.
Yes, Larry put a beating on Shavers and I may have been pushing it regarding Spinks, as Larry was well past his prime. however the question then is when was Larry in his prime? what was his best fight? or what age? the reason I would like you to advise on the above is I had many debates regarding Larry and Ali and I`ve never had someone use weight as a way of theory
bigmace1000 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 There is more to it than weight but weight is definitely a big part of it. Most of the guys pre-ban Ali fought were smaller than him, Liston was an exception but his style was well suited for Ali.
Holmes was the first man Ali's size who would be content to stay outside and stick his jab all night. Holmes had a great jab and a great jab is the one thing that upsets speed.
Cooper was 22 lbs ligher than Ali when he knocked him down.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
the best ali was 214 1/2 pounds against Chuvalo, and he was 212 pounds against Cleveland Williams.
PRIME LARRY HOLMES HAD THE SAME SIZE THAN ALI, AND STILL ALI WAS 2 POUNDS HEAVIER
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Ali was no where near his prime against Frazier. A think a prime Ali would have made Frazier look silly.
In spite of their comparable sizes, which I have never disputed. Holmes was fighting much bigger men in his prime than Ali was.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 I NEVER SAID " ALI WAS IN HIS PRIME WHEN HE FOUGHT FRAZIER" but stil joe frazier had a bad style for PRIME ali and PRIME holmes, I THINK JOE FRAZIER IN HIS PRIME WOULD BEAT HOLMES 2 /3 FIGHTS.
ALI FACED SONNY LISTON, ALI FACED GEORGE FOREMAN, THESE GUYS ARE THE STRONGEST BOXERS EVER.
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Frazier had a bad style for a post prime Ali. I think a prime Ali and a prime Holmes defeat Frazier easily. I think frazier is one of the moet overrated heavyweights in history.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Ali did face Sonny Liston but an already fading Sonny Liston who was probably 4 years past his prime and was reportedly not even training any more. He had fought a total of 3 rounds in the 3 years prior to Ali.
Larry Holmes would have jabbed Frazier's face off. Frazier went to the death with a much faded Ali. Even a prime Ali would have schooled Frazier.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 I agree that a great jab is one way to deal with speed fighter & you are correct Holmes had a great jab. However, Ali's jab was second to none and Ali faster than Holmes. Now what? Ali beat more top champions, top contenders and undefeated fighters than Holmes. I'd be willing to be Holmes wouldn't have lasted 5 rounds with a prime George Foreman. Styles make fights but there was only one guy who could beat them all.....ALI
BigTimePride 1 year ago
@BigTimePride I think you completely underestimate the Larry Holmes jab. Holmes took out many guys with a jab and not a right hand. You are also neglecting to consider Holmes had a 3" reach advantage.
As for Foreman, he was a bully and would not have gotten close to a prime Holmes.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@bigmace1000 Don't get me wrong, I think Ali was brilliant and Holmes learned much from Ali. if there had been no Muhammad Ali there would have been no Larry Holmes.
That is why it is hard to compare different eras. I would love to see a fight with them in their primes but as you know it will never happen.
But based on Holmes' size and his ability to jab I think he would have given Ali fits.

@Midnightrambler3760 you are talking nonsense...
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Nonsense or you just fail to grasp the nuances of the sport?
Ali was decked by Henry Cooper who was much smaller and slower than Larry Holmes.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 ali was not in his prime against cooper (1963) and cooper had a diferent style than holmes. you are talking nonsense again. styles make fights, according your theory foreman would kill ali, because norton and frazier dominated ali 70s, but george killed these guys. every fight is diferent, i can say PAST PRIME norton gave the hell to PRIME holmes.
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo I believe the era of Foreman/Norton/Frazier is the most overated era in HW boxing history. They were average fighters who made their careers on going a collective 2-5 against a faded Ali.
A prime Ali wipes the floor with all of them, so does a prime Holmes.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 prime tyson destroyed holmes but tyson wanted no part of foreman
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Prime Tyson destroyed a 40 year old Larry Holmes, big deal.
At least Holmes got in with Tyson, we never saw Foreman go anywhere near him.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
foreman destroyed frazier and prime norton in 2 rounds, he did beat chuvalo, goyo peralta, ron lyle.. past prime norton gave to prime holmes the hell, joe frazier dominated holmes always(they were sparring partners, and past prime joe broke to prime holmes 2 ribs).7larry holmes did "defend" his belt against tomato cans as weaver, witherspoon, smith, berbick, past prime norton, past prime shavers, gerry cooney... and all them gave the hell to the best holmes.holmes avoided young and lyle
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Jimmy Young lost 4 of 5 fights when Holmes was champion. Why would Holmes fight him?
You cannot say a shot in sparring would happen in a fight. Sparring is not a fight and sometimes you are doing cornerwork.
To say because a fighter hit a guy in sparring that he would beat him just shows your complete lack of understanding of the sport.
Larry Holmes was sent home from Ali's training camp because he was making Ali look bad.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 OLD FOREMAN CHALLENGED TYSON 1500 TIMES, BUT TYSON WANTED NO PART OF FOREMAN. TYSON FACED HOLMES WHO WAS A WEAK KID COMPARED WITH FOREMAN

@Midnightrambler3760
"If you need a goat to blame for never seeing Foreman-Holmes, blame Holmes’ management and Don King for doing the right thing by Holmes, because Larry Holmes was nowhere close to being ready for George Foreman in 1976, despite Clancy messing Foreman up. "
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Not fighting larry Holmes was the best thing that ever happened to George Foreman.
Foreman had been schooled by Ali and his head was in the toilet. Holmes would have ended Foreman's career.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 In a head to head matchup between Frazier and Holmes at their peak, most observers are split on who would have won. Holmes is usually ranked above Frazier because of the 20 consecutive title defenses he made over his seven year reign as champ. That leaves Foreman. Because of the power Foreman still possessed during his comeback, which resulted in some impressive knockouts, not to mention that he won the title from the lineal champ and Holmes didn't,
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo The fact that Holmes did not win his title from the lineal champ just proves that the lineal champ wanted nothing to do with him.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 Foreman's comeback is viewed as being more successful than Holmes’ was. That’s why Holmes wants the Foreman name on his record. He believes since Foreman is only 11 months older than he is, beating him now means he would have beat him when both were at their peak
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@combatesdeboxeo Who cares about their comebacks?
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE TALKING NONSENSE BECAUSE YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A BLIND FAN OF HOLMES. GOOD LUCK BYE
combatesdeboxeo 1 year ago
@Midnightrambler3760 Who would have won had they fought at their best? The best Foreman was the one who fought from late 1972 through October 1974 when he lost to Ali. The best Holmes fought during the years 1979-82. In my opinion, the undefeated Foreman of ‘73-‘74 would have beaten the undefeated Holmes of ‘80-‘82. I don't believe Holmes could have survived the Foreman that Muhammad Ali survived
