my PSU has one PCI e power cable, could i use one cable and one mmolex adapter to power the card, cause using both molex adapters wont leave me enough for fans and other stuff
@callofdutyguy9 You can, but it's not reccommended to do it for long periods of time. It's best to upgrade your PSU. Even with a molex and one power cable, there may not be enough amps.
the gtx 260 55nm doesn't have a backplate. it doesn't matter from wich manufacturer is it. look at my video (type "my gaming rig (dima)) in search. i have sli with 65 and 55 nm versions
I have everything up to the max on Cod4 on 1280x1024 and still get 60fps. On Crysis i never put on AA but everything is cranked up to the max, on 1280x1024
@Slowshyy well the correct answer is that 2x8800gt when use sli is better of course than on gtx260,i use both of them in past, i was have 2x8800gt in sli and now i have 3gtx260+,in 3dmark03 cause use more graphics power i get about 74000 points with 2x8800gt and about 92000 with 2xgtx260+ sli and 110000 with 3xgtx260+
thinking off ordering this today what do you think of the card comperd to a 8800gt would there be any need to run my old 8800gt as a phisics card with the new nvida softwere or is this card good enuf as a stand alone
WRONG. In CoD4 i get 60fps on EVERYTHING maxed out. On Crysis I usually get 40 to 45 frames sometimes 50 but the lowest its ever dropped for me is 25fps.
There is one reason that i def have came across why you would need the amount of GFX power and CPU power and that would be rendering out animations, unless you have a number of networked computers in your home to do satellite rendering then this is def the way to go.
waste of money, these cards aren't even that great. i mean who NEEDS those high end cards. i'm playing everything i want with a simple 9600gt, even crysis on high with 2xAA at 1280x1024
You realise that some people might be updating from a fairly old card, and a 9600gt? seriously, what a POS, my 8800GTS is better, but the GTX260 is awesome for the money considering the power you get for it compared to the 280, which is only about 20%faster at max for about £100/ $200 more.
dude i was upgrading from a 7600gt, i have no need for a gtx260. i run every game i need to run at 1280x1024 with around 70-80fps except for crysis, that one runs at the same res maxed out 4AA on dx9 with around 45-50fps. buying a more expensive graphics card would just be a waste of my money and a waste of my time.
yes, YOU dont need one, you made it sound in your original post as if just because you didnt need it then therefore its worthless and nobody else would need one, sounds a little arrogant doesn't it?
BTW, some people use these cards for rendering and applications like folding@home,and not just games, because the professional cards are expensive beyond belief.
Oh and you should have got a 8800 GTX or ultra, better than the 9 series, infact the only decent 9 series is the GX2
i don't want to blow that much money on a video card, i got the 9600gt because my local computer store was having a special on it 149.99 and a 50 dollar mail in rebate so it came out to around a little less than a hundred bucks.
Of course it will kill it, see the price difference? For it's time and for the money though, the 8800gt was a great card. Oh and even though your not an ati fan, you should still get the x2, i can tell you now its fucking powerful. (I have a 4870x2 in main and 8800gt in another btw lol)
Who cares if Newegg is running some little $20 sale...you're dodging the point. Oh..and rumors are just rumors.. How can an overclocked 4870 beat a GTX 280 if you can overclock the 280 also? The 4870 doesn't "beat" the GTX 280 in anything, and it beats the GTX 260 in very few benchmarks leaving the majority believing that the cards are equal. I, however, know that they are not equal because ATi drivers cannot support features in a number of games.
Yeah, and I was actually talking about an overclocked 260 being ahead by 30 frames.. but regardless, these online websites all use different specs just look at them they're different. With the release of the 4800 series the GTX 260 has been lowered to $299 MSRP - 4870 isn't really cheaper at all. It has DDR5, but it has less of it. They are comparable products, but I do not concede the fact that nVidia still owns performance with both cards because of ForceWare. I've tried them both myself.
The benchmarks I've seen show the 260 beating the 4870 by roughly 30 frames at 1920x1200 in CoD4. OCC notes that the ATI offerings all fall flat in comparison to the nVidia lineup, particularly with Call of Duty 4.
The GTX260 also beats the 4870 in 3DMark06 by about 1000 points
Most review sites consider them to be equal, though they seem to overlook the absolutely inferior bloatware shit drivers. But I think you're right...like I said, continue to cling to the hope that the drivers will improve from ATi. There was a time when ATi was something...they made their own cards..they were great. Now you've got Sapphire garbage. I think everyone is being too optimistic about them at this point. Their "comeback" is greatly exagerrated. ATI sold out for a reason.
I have been looking into the same thing. I would say go with the best price. 4870 has been cheaper for some time, but i have seen a few GTX 260 that have been very close to the price of the 4870.
The performance between the cards is marginal. They each perform better with different games. Also think about whether you might want in future to have 2 cards in either SLI or CrossFire. You are restricted to thr Nforce boards with SLI, but can do CrossFire on the Intel motherboards.
Actually, get your foot out of your mouth because the GTX 260 smokes the 4870 in most benchmarks. The reason for this: ATI's usual bloatware drivers...maybe in 6 months the drivers will have improved enough to make this an actual contender. Until then, the specs are nice. Have a nice day
the 260 clocks are lower i believe but that irrelevant, mhz doesnt = performance, its apples to oranges, look at ATI's cards from the previous gen, they were always much higher MHz and always much lower performance compared the 9800/8800 cards a 260 is way faster than a 9800 and they do overclock quite good, good enough that an overclocked 260 is only like 5% slower than a stock 280
what ever the factory clocks are is irrelevant they are all identical and more likely than not can all be clocked to around the same OC. i just ordered 3 of the MSI ones for 299 on newegg. cant wait.

Ohh,well im running 1680 x 1050 res so that doesnt help me out too much. I'll probably end up getting two of these in a bit if the performance increase isnt much greater then the two 8800GT's.

I like the 260 over the 4870 because:
They are almost equal
The 260 produces far less heat, you can turn off the 260 for integrated graphics
I trust nvidia far more than Ati, their cards are shit
and the only real performance differences that matter right now are on crysis and the GTX260 does amazing.
