  • So, how were you able to preserve this 78 rpm record?

    It sounds ok.

  • fav version

  • 78 RPM and a song for side. I have some records loke this

  • I love "scrach" sound. Jazz and Blues for ever

  • This is King Oliver' Orchestra, here the chimes. It was recorded on 5-22-1930 Victor 22298-A Bluebird B-5466-A

  • Is the date recorded on the record label?

Duke Ellington did record this under the band name "Harlem Hot Chocolates" in March of that year. Vocals were by "Sunny Smith" who was actually Irving Mills.

The song is a lot older than Mills or his pseudonym "Joe Primrose".

  • It's KING OLIVER !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thats King Oliver, not Duke Ellington.

  • Thank you for sharing this! I have Cab Calloway's version of this song and Louis Armstrong's, but I haven't heard Duke Ellington's. Fantastic!

  • I have the same "Original Schellack-record" in my Colllection. Twostrokefan!

  • What is that strange disc thing in this video. *giggle*

  • chujova plokstele

  • One of the prettiest songs i've heard! This is just one of the amazing versions of this timeless classic!! so awesome!

  • I love that lick the trumpet played at 2:02...i wouldnt think of adding tgat

  • That is why he's duke motherfuckin ellington

  • lmao nice!

  • THis is a really cool song.

A band from Knoxville, TN called Christabel and the Jons has this on their first album with a big band. They play it as a quartet live. Its amazing. Christa's voice is great...she whispers some of the lyrics and gives it a spooky feel.

  • Cool!

  • I agree with ethermadness

what a great way to spend the night

my favorite versions are louis armstrong and bobby blue bland, with doug duffy a solid third

  • thank you ma! and by the way check out The White Stripes version of this song..Jack White does a really good job, and also Death Letter, the best cover i've heard.

  • the white stripes suck

  • why?

  • (eevlwich)

I like the White Stripes - just because something is new or popular doesn't make it horrible.

  • i LOVE the White Stripes...it's MISFITROBBY138 who said they suck, i only asked him why did he think so...i happen to love them, so don't yell at me!

  • No, YOU SHUT UP!

  • @FatManRedemption what are 8 years old?

  • I like the White Stripes

but they pretty much copied cab calloway's version

  • Lacks feeling aswell I'd say, I hit the link hoping to hear somethin good, disappointment.

  • I agree :(

  • what a beautiful kit, man. and thanks for posting this song!

  • Sorry boys, there`s been a mistake here, ain`t it so? THIS IS NOT THE DUKE ELLINGTON ORQUESTRA, it`s actually the already-decaying King Oliver`s orchestra (yes, with bubber miley, which has been fired from the DEO in 1929). Oliver, at this time, were hardly playing at all, and were relying on other soloists to build up his improvisation poll. At this time, Miley was playing with him, which can easily lead to the mistake that this is the duke`s band.

Cherio! And toodle-oo for all ya folks.

  • Ah well, even if it's a mistake, it's still wonderful - I adore this song, and loved hearing this version. Just amazing :-)

  • Ah no doubt that... everything with bubber miley sounds A-grade.

  • unbelieveable...i dont wish to hear it but the way it is originally recorded...it is over the top...thank you for this alex

  • Great job. I just searched You Tube for this song and there are loads of great musicians, known and unknown, with videos on this.

What a great way to spend the night.

  • I love this recording; thanks for sharing.

  • I haven't heard this version before. Excellent rendition with some great trumpet work. By the way, I think it's "so cold, so FAIR" as opposed to "BARE." Unlike office1111, I can't hear this without thinking of...Betty Boop!

  • either one... there are even more variations to this line

  • Yes, it's certainly "FAIR", not bare. Meaning beautiful, not blonde.

Great song. There's more than 30 covers of it; quite a few have variant lyrics. It's become rather like a folk song you can change & add to.

  • Wow, feels like I'm at Arnaud's in New Orleans having Sunday brunch, as a funeral procession passes, seeing only shadows of mourners through the lace curtains.

  • Great record. Thanks for sharing it. I'd never heard this recording of the song. I like the Jack Teagarden version quite a lot, though there have been very many excellent recordings of it.
