  • Speed of the video was altered, increased, just look at the original footages elsewhere... Nowhere as fast as it shows here...

  • Great stuff. Back then the drivers wore big-boy pants.

  • Love Dijon, so fast

  • id scrap all rules except for if you intentionly try to kill the other driver then you should be banned because todays rules suck under current rules you dont really get a chance to race and they should bring back turbo cars and manual gear shifts because thats what proved how great a driver you were if you could take a corner while changing gear at 150mph then you are a proper driver today that flappy paddle rubbish sucks its designed for retards who cant drive a real car

  • Esse Gilles éra Zica o Bixo éra Loco mesmo !!

  • I think the speed of the video was slightly increased to have a more intensified effect. look at the cheering people, its obvious if u observe.

  • thats so intense, it looks unreal!

  • super exciting

  • very good

  • The new 2012 rules have said you have to stay in position when moving across to defend meaning you cannot return to the racing line until the next corner.

Bring back these days when racers wanted to fight.

  • Bernie Ecclestone has 22 youtube accounts...

  • What track was this?

  • @xBatboys4 Dijon

  • Too bad they don't actually race that fast. Then it would be very exciting.

  • great to watch this after so many years!

loved the renault turbos by the way.

  • Fan-f'ing-tastic. Love it with the quote and even the first bit of music kinda matches. Best F1 duel ever, hands down.

  • Watch this about once a month just to keep the blood flowin'.

  • @Shilleenio - The Crystal Method-Keep Hope Alive

  • What's the song name 0:07 - 1:18? Thanks :)

  • Gilles had a unique talent, his ability to violate the laws of physics was worthy of Einstein or Hawking, I was able to blow up cars that were competitive in theory not only by his ability to go faster than the rest, and a vision conductive boundaries incredible, just watch this video to realize that it's unique, perhaps Fangio, who is able to recover so astonishing that with so many limitations.

  • Driver vs Machine.

  • Look, and this is F-1 battle!

Present dull F-1 is not interesting

  • @cladbuster It could be very interesting, but since RBR is dominant there is no competition.

  • Arnoux's got at least 100-150 more usable horsepower and Villeneuve genius in getting ahead is staggering- it violates every rule of the possible. Gilles is going for its and enjoying it and Arnoux is honoured to be on the same track

  • what's the name of the track??

  • @motorsportfan1990 Dijon-Prenois, France.

  • @spankr

    thx

  • @motorsportfan1990 Fat Boy Slim - Right here, right now

  • Dijon-Prenois in France

  • Only in F1!!!

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that was very go i cant describe the beautiful factor of this race

sadly villeneuve died but he will be in our hearts

    R.i.P villeneuve

  • The reason for no sound is because you would notice that it has been speeded up to look faster ! Check other versions of vid to see for yourself

  • phenomenal piece of driving

  • Determination of the drivers is clearly visible. Not like today

  • Now there's some driveing :D

  • Thanks for the video. I'm from Gilles home province. Vive Villeneuve!!!!

  • These guys and their cars make our guys look like a bunch of pussies.....

  • "It was terrible when Gilles died. I cried that day and the next one, too, even though I had to race ...and I remember the feeling that we were all starting equal, from now on. Villeneuve was gone. We all knew he had a talent beyond our reach." Arnoux

  • Amazing racing

  • wow - lose the music, it cheapens this epic piece of racing history!!!

  • and those were the days when wining toke balls and skills, not just fancy equipment, pussy strategists and shit

  • need no music, need sound

  • How Many Horse Powers Are Produced From The Cars Back Then?

  • @Griffssx The strongest turboengines had over 1400 hp during the qualifying. But that was in the 80's. I don't know the power of the renault engines in that seaso.

  • @Saki2407 Don't exagurate it. The most powerfull engine was the 1.5 liter BMW engine which produced 1300 hp during qualifiying

  • @AFCAjax91 These were special engines built just for qualifying sessions. The Brabham mechanics nicknamed them "grenade motors" -- because they lasted about five laps.

  • @Griffssx 500 hp

  • @MrBanksyman Yeah it's gonna sound like crap. Apparently they're gonna use compound turbos, which basically uses the boost from a turbo to spin the turbines in the second turbo, which is gonna exponentially increase the boost in the second turbo. And apparently they're gonna have 150bhp KERS to take the power from 600 to 750bhp. Dunno how they're gonna do that if they can barely get 80bhp KERS to work :/

  • Reminds me of scalectrix haha

  • FUCK THE MUSIC

  • Fantastic racing

  • "If it goes wrong, I probably die. But if not, I could WIN!"

  • @jay2jayB yeah , seemed to be Gilles idea of driving....."do or die"

  • aaawesome

  • you have sped up the videos..this is not the original speed..its more than 1x....

  • @5AMM0608 i tryed to put normal and is 50% more faster then normal. And isn't his video. i think link is gur . com or something like it.

  • @RedhotIta1 u didnt even upload this vid.....u r not the uploader man...

  • @5AMM0608 -.-'' may i not sayed in right mode but the video is took from another web site and i speed-up the ORIGINAL vid on Adobe Premierè of 50%.

  • PS...99 racers out of 100 would have wrecked either themselves, arnoux or both driving the way Villeneuve did....and the 1 that wouldn't have would be Villeneuve himself.

  • If this video doesn't give you goosebumps all over, you are not a true racing fan.

  • mettre de la musique la dessus !!! quel gachis !!! en plus musique de merde .

  • what is the name of the song that start in 0:07???

  • @rayovelez Cristal Method - Keep Hope Alive

  • When I think about the best F1 race ever I see this battle.

    Thank you Rene and Gilles.

  • ohannes

  • Damn, such shame Gilles died in car crash 2 years later :-(

  • Kyle Busch wanted to pit today because he was afraid to race Carl Edwards. Its races like this that make me smile considering all the drivers of today are so pussy whipped

  • a small number disliked the best fight ever of F1. How can this be possible? Aaa, I know, they are Justin Bieber fans

  • Indimenticabile

  • this

    is

    racing!

  • Second song's name pls???

  • @MrSnimalica Fatboy Slim, called Right here right now!

  • the one guy at the end just moved the fuck over hahahah exhilarating drive

  • ""Those few laps were just fantastic for me - out braking each other and trying to race for the line, touching each other but without wanting to put the other car out." Gilles Villeneuve

  • what's the first song?

  • Most exciting battle in F1 history!

  • Corrida de homem, hj bando de maricas combinados.

  • Arnoux' Renault had a turbo engine.

    Villeneuve's Ferrari 312T4 had NOT.

    Renault 1,5 litre turbo V6

    Ferrari 3,0 litre flat 12

Ferrari's first turbo f1 was the 126CK which arrived in 1981.

    NA Ferrari vs Turbo Renault.

ONLY Renault used turbos in 1979.

  • @McLarenMercedes thanks mate!

  • @c0V3Ro

    you're welcome. great video

  • @McLarenMercedes thanks! this is a tribute! so, to the ones who asked why the music and why not original speed, you can found the original one in youtube, that i also recommend. but, please, don't come here to pollute. thanks all nice comments.

  • @McLarenMercedes Nope First Ferrari Turbo was the 126C without Turbocompressor of the KKK just turbo charger of comprax. and this was in 1980, Used for the F1 season in 1981

  • @McLarenMercedes your right but we had gilles power that = never give up still miss him to this day

    gilles forever

    forza ferrari

  • @McLarenMercedes nicely clarified

  • @McLarenMercedes Ferrari had Turbo in 1980(sperimental not used for F1 Championship) with the 126C, After in the start of the 1981 came the 126CX near the end of 1981 (after Swiss Grand Prix Dijon-Prenois i think) came the 126CK. Just little more info :P

@godanselmo will be not the same turbo 4 Cilinders as BMW as Brabham in 1982--1988 . Anyway i prefer cars such 126C2 (top Speed 360km/h-Monza), F1 87-88, re20b, FW07-8 (Turbo 1982)etc... That was cars not the 150 Italia.

  • bravo!! wow it was like ballet, at 180 mph!

  • Comment removed

  • renault was a better car but villeneuve a better pilot......

    senna #1

  • renault !!!!!

  • The speed in this video is unreal..

  • Although modern F1 cars lap much faster thanks to the advanced chassis, braking and super quick paddle shifting, the old school F1 cars are NOT that much slower in a straight line, even going back to the '70s. I have a Road and Track article where they tested Lauda's '74 Ferrari F1 at 9.0sec in the 1/4, similar to what a modern F1 does. The best '80s turbo cars must have been capable of ungodly standing mile acceleration....

  • @400SA

yes, Nelson Piquet saw 352km/h on the Monza straight in 1987 and he was running the same high downforce set-up he used in Monaco... With lower downforce (which might have been risky) I guess 380km/h+ (240mph) would be possible. Insane.

considering the BMW turbo with 5,6 bars of boost in qualifying trim produced more than 1400hp I can only imagine the acceleration in these cars. Senna was the one that really knew how to qualify these turbo beasts.

  • @McLarenMercedes i see u on almost every car video lol

  • I'm all for bringing back the turbos, but not if the evil dward Bernie is going to handicap them to the point that they're slower than today's V-8s. Revs are a big part of what makes F1 cars exciting just like absurd boost, we need both!!

  • @400SA

    amen

I wouldn't mind seeing 900hp turbo cars coming back (heck they safely ran 900hp from 1,5 litre engines in the mid 80's today such an output is no sweat) and too see the drivers trying to handle these challenging turbo beasts through corners.

F1 needs to be the fastest motorsport and with the modern safe racetracks and cars I see no problem why they shouldn't be. The drivers would love it, as would the fans and tv viewers.

I agree about Bernie being an evil dwarf too.

  • Renault probably had only turbo?

  • Comment removed

  • what's the name of the first song?

  • roll on 2013

  • now thats what i call high speed close racing. good scrap

  • we´ll never see this kind a race again.

  • Nowadays, BOTH of these MAGIC drivers would be punished by the stewards for "Innapropriate conduction"... hehehehe.

This video is amazing... I can´t fed up watching it!!

  • Nowadays, BOTH of these MAGIC drivers would be punished by the stewards for "Innapropriate conduction"... hehehehe.

This video is amazing... I can´t fed up watching it!!

  • They considering to 2013 get back turbos and engines to 1.6ccm, and ground efect!

  • Ilyen manapság miért nincs?

  • This is Formula 1............ this is Gilles, all other is nothing!!

    Gilles I love You!!

  • watch?v=5Vk-kxZe8NA&NR=1&feature=fvwpmthe camera focus and zoom may give sort of the speed up, but in my perception its nothing compared to real!

  • watch?v=5Vk-kxZe8NA&NR=1&feature=fvwp

  • whats the name of first song???

  • @MrRimbas Crystal Method - Keep Hope Alive.

  • F1 is going back to turbo charged engines in 2013.

  • @godanselmo lol... nah... i rather they start using kers again! progression yea? haha

  • @godanselmo yeah and they'll be 4 cylinder..

  • @godanselmo Is this officially announced? Or is this just internet nonsense?

If this would happen, it would rock the house cuz it would bring totally new dimension to overtaking.

  • @sfprivateer Nothing is official as of yet I don't think, but it has been going around in the F1 circles for a while now that they will be going with turbo charged engines in 2013. Porsche have recently expressed their interest in returning to the sport if it goes ahead, also Honda have said they'll look at retuning. It will be good for F1 have more manufactures in the sport.

  • @sfprivateer I believe they will be 1.6 liter 4 cyl turbos.

  • @godanselmo You're right, but without research possibilities!! All teams will have a 1,5 lt 4 cylinders turbo engine, with a pre-determined turbo pressure, that is another Formula NOIA (i.e. boredom)!! This isn't the way to get closer to real fans of F1!! I need different cars with different engines!!

  • @godanselmo But they're going down from V8's to V6's now....

  • @ShockWaveTom Not V6, inline four which in my opinion is better option.

  • @SorsanSuuriAfro Ohh, right, okay, cool, thanks for the info there ;)

  • @godanselmo yea but, too bad it's dropping down to 4 cylinder engines.

  • @Cycofoo1914

"yea but, too bad it's dropping down to 4 cylinder engines"

Well true there'll be no V6 turbo, bugger that. However lets not forget BMW's F1 turbo engine was a 4 cylinder back then. I wish there will be choices of engine architectures, just like back in the old turbo (inline 4 and V6) and also 3.5L NA era (V8, V10 & V12). I actually prefer I5 turbos over I4s and wish engine suppliers can have either I4, I5, V6 or even I6 for the next turbo era.

  • @godanselmo It's only gonna be a 1.6l straight-4 though :/

  • @godanselmo But they are 4 cylinders with a decreased rev limit..... 12000 rpms nly.....

  • @boo123p its actually 1.6L V6 turbo limited to 15,000rpm. I think this is a quite happy medium.

  • What a great video of a great driver. A career cut short by tragedy in 1982. This video is NOT sped up. That is how these cars raced. They were lighter than a dogsled with nearly 600 hp. And the drivers were fearless. A great heritage.

  • @c0V3Ro why slow? Those days safe reglaments were not so harsh and car's BHP were about 1200 (like brand new powered up veiron) and cockpit was lighter and weaker (deadly) so back then F1 races were MUCH faster than nowasdays

  • @obeybosss

If you knew at least something about car racing, you would know that your speed doesn't depend on max horsepower, it depends on how much of it you can use. And believe me - nowadays F1s can use all of their power which was really impossible in 80's. And then you would know that you can get some time on straights but you can find 10x more in corners - and that's where F1 excells nowadays. And they weren't lighter in 80's. Nowadays, F1 is 10 seconds or more faster then in 80's.

  • @flashpeter625 i didnt mean that the car is slower nowadays i am just saying that if Fia would allow the usage of such powerfull engines nowadays even with motor technologies the races would be more interesting, the only 1 problem would be pilot safety and nowadays (2010) cars are slower then couple of years ago (2007)

  • @obeybosss I disagree. more power wouldnt have any impact on the racing. it would make the dirty air effect worse, the cars would still be doing the same speed through the bends, and would make the cars even harder to contro

Take Moto GP. the 800CC bikes today are faster than older 1000CC bikes because they are eaiser to control, less ragged and less vicious.

  • @dienkonig33 The 800CC are harder to control and a lot more vicious then the old 990's, but not so bad as the old 500. A good indicator is the number of high sides

There faster because the tires and electronics are better. Corner speed is much more important then top speed.

More power doesn't mean harder to control. It's the way the power is delivered that matters.

  • @obeybosss

the engines they have now are 2.4 Litre V8s, 4 valve/2 cam Naturally Aspirated. produing 780 BHP. 2.4 litres in a Chavs golf will produce less than a 1/6th of that.

so the FIA let them have the last 4 Cylnders back = 1000BHP

so, the FIA let them turbochage = 15/1700 BPH.

Then the FIA take the minimum weight limit off the engines = Ferrari will spend a fortune making the blocks out of Solid Magnisium, and this 1750BHP engine will weigh less than the driver.

    Its a Stupid idea.

  • @dienkonig33 BHP will be restricted to 600BHP... They will use 1.4L... The incredible scream the engines are producing these days will disapear with the V8 2.4 engines.

I'm not against it, but I doubt F1 will be this special anymore...

  • The best F1 action ever. However the title is wrong - only Reanault was using 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine in this season. They were the first ones to discover turbo's abilities (since 1977). All other teams used athmospheric 3.0 litre engines - most of them Cosworth V8, Ferrari had flat-12, Alfa had V12 or flat-12 and Brabham used Cosworth V8 and Alfa's engines. Turbo era started in 1982/1983 when half of the teams (the richer ones) used turbo engines.

  • From a time when racers were allowed to race. Now when someone like Schumacher is even slightly aggressive in defending his position, we have uproar. The old heroes of F1 would've done the same thing, because they had guts!

  • @ToH1183 100% agreed. Schumacher went too far but still, i do not see whats the hubbub about.

  • first song is

The Crystal Method - Keep Hope Alive

  • Watching this makes me think that Gilles Villeneuve thought it was going to be business as usual as he approached Jochen Mass from behind in Belgium. His last thought was probably "Merde!".

  • I'd say it was Tabarnak.

  • it's so sad these days in the f1 that some people here think that this is speeded up.

  • @chsiam i watch f1 for the engineering and technology show. for racing show i would recommend le mans series ;)

  • @c0V3Ro

Why is f1 not considered a race show?

  • @c0V3Ro i would recommend motogp

  • @chsiam but it does look speeded up....look at the crowd ....not the track,.....

  • @chsiam - It is sped up. This is the actual version: /watch?v=8Nxwn3OHkEw

  • we should refuse to look at the f1 nowadays. Until this action comes back , and the cry babies in their cars grow up.

  • Rubbin' is racin!

  • Rubbin' is racing.

  • @c0V3Ro only nascar is slow

  • Le plus beau duel de tout les temps !!!

    Et c'était à Dijon ;-)

  • Wgat is the song before Fatboy Slim - Right Here Right Now ???

  • HARD FUCKING CORE !!

This is racing, not the gay boy nonsense we have these days !

  • @turboslag "gay boy" nonsense? Besides the idiotic homophobia, do you think you could turn up and drive an F1 car for the impending 2011 season? Asides from this fantastic incident, please name another moment in F1 history when drivers were so combative. Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve never had a fight like this after the race ever again; so are they "gay boy" nonsense?

In 2010 the field in qualifying was seperated by less than 8 tenths of a second in qualifying. Gay boy nonsense.

  • @MrThreshold2009

You should get a sense of humour !!

Although it's difficult to recall every moment of scintilation from the F1 old days, mainly due to there being so many, there were lots of titanic battles, real edge of the seat stuff. Which is in distinct contrast to F1 now, as per the example you give, a close qualifying is cause for celebration ! You are deluded if you think F1 now can compare with past F1, particularly the 70's & 80's, possibly the early '90's. BTW, R U gay ? LOL !!

  • @turboslag No I'm not gay, I'm just not a Grade A Cunt like you evidently are.

My indicating how close qualifying is was to show how competitve F1 is; more so than it has ever been. Obviously this went right over your head as you are so exceptionally idiotic. Judging from your writing style "BTW, R U gay ? LOL !!" - only a complete fucking wanker would write in such a way.

You clearly know nothing about F1 and are too busy looking at the past with rose tinted glasses to see the truth.

  • @MrThreshold2009

LOL !!! Typical response from a complete imbecile !!! Profane language is your only resort !!

Give up now you retard, you are totally out of your depth and are obviously clueless.

  • @turboslag yer true but thing is its not realy the drivers folt is it :/ i mean do u think if the rules dident change and F1 stayed dangorse and like real racing there wood be no drivers ofc there wood be the drivers dont get 2 pick heaps of people make fun of the drivers saying O they woodent do this but :/ if F1 never changed then they probly wood just coz they r use 2 saftly and stuff they woodent its the dam guys who run F1 that make all the rules that rnt driver that stuffed it all up

  • The baallllss at 0:38 ! Gilles knew that Arnoux was faster but didn't know the meaning of giving up. He fights like crazy for 2 laps and manage to finish in front...

That is a pure racing driver!

  • i think ever effort to improve is valid. and kers is a nice tech to common cars.

  • I'm a huge f1 fan but has only been following the sport religiously for the past 2 years. I'm excited about turbos making a comeback as I have never experienced watching turbo f1 cars. I would rather the v10 but anything besides the boring v8 is be alright with me.

  • and someone thought KERS could make F1 better than this?

  • Comment removed

  • those people have big balls and or a death wish standing on the track like that knowing these 2 guys are weaving all over the track trying to pass each other!!!!

  • Ça c'est de la course! La meilleure fin de course de l'histoire! Salut Gilles! Tu seras toujours un Dieu et une légende!

That's what I call a race! The best end ever! Gilles, you'll be forever a God and a Legend!

  • the best duel of f1 story!!!!!

  • racing was great in those days now its follow my leader ..try indy car or nascar its more exciting..F1 is going to loose a lot of fans if they dont get there act together

  • O Gilles era de outro planeta...

  • dayum those were nice runs!

  • Rene Arnoux has a Turbo Renault.

Gilles Villenueve had NA Ferrari flat12, the legendary boxer

  • I'd give anything if this horseshit music would just go away and be replaced by the sound of thes fabulous cars!!!

The BMW formula one four cylinder turbo engine of 1.5Liters (92 cu. in.) reportedly could make 1,200 HP (!) in race trim and nearly 1,500 HP in qualifying trim and with the turbo lag of the day was nearly impossible to drive.

Today's F-1 cars are making about 800 HP with good throttle response and driveability.

  • Now we have great drivers, but not great racers.
