The new 2012 rules have said you have to stay in position when moving across to defend meaning you cannot return to the racing line until the next corner.
Bring back these days when racers wanted to fight.
Gilles had a unique talent, his ability to violate the laws of physics was worthy of Einstein or Hawking, I was able to blow up cars that were competitive in theory not only by his ability to go faster than the rest, and a vision conductive boundaries incredible, just watch this video to realize that it's unique, perhaps Fangio, who is able to recover so astonishing that with so many limitations.
Arnoux's got at least 100-150 more usable horsepower and Villeneuve genius in getting ahead is staggering- it violates every rule of the possible. Gilles is going for its and enjoying it and Arnoux is honoured to be on the same track
"It was terrible when Gilles died. I cried that day and the next one, too, even though I had to race ...and I remember the feeling that we were all starting equal, from now on. Villeneuve was gone. We all knew he had a talent beyond our reach." Arnoux
@Griffssx The strongest turboengines had over 1400 hp during the qualifying. But that was in the 80's. I don't know the power of the renault engines in that seaso.
@AFCAjax91 These were special engines built just for qualifying sessions. The Brabham mechanics nicknamed them "grenade motors" -- because they lasted about five laps.
@MrBanksyman Yeah it's gonna sound like crap. Apparently they're gonna use compound turbos, which basically uses the boost from a turbo to spin the turbines in the second turbo, which is gonna exponentially increase the boost in the second turbo. And apparently they're gonna have 150bhp KERS to take the power from 600 to 750bhp. Dunno how they're gonna do that if they can barely get 80bhp KERS to work :/
PS...99 racers out of 100 would have wrecked either themselves, arnoux or both driving the way Villeneuve did....and the 1 that wouldn't have would be Villeneuve himself.
Kyle Busch wanted to pit today because he was afraid to race Carl Edwards. Its races like this that make me smile considering all the drivers of today are so pussy whipped
""Those few laps were just fantastic for me - out braking each other and trying to race for the line, touching each other but without wanting to put the other car out." Gilles Villeneuve

@McLarenMercedes Nope First Ferrari Turbo was the 126C without Turbocompressor of the KKK just turbo charger of comprax. and this was in 1980, Used for the F1 season in 1981

@godanselmo will be not the same turbo 4 Cilinders as BMW as Brabham in 1982--1988 . Anyway i prefer cars such 126C2 (top Speed 360km/h-Monza), F1 87-88, re20b, FW07-8 (Turbo 1982)etc... That was cars not the 150 Italia.
Although modern F1 cars lap much faster thanks to the advanced chassis, braking and super quick paddle shifting, the old school F1 cars are NOT that much slower in a straight line, even going back to the '70s. I have a Road and Track article where they tested Lauda's '74 Ferrari F1 at 9.0sec in the 1/4, similar to what a modern F1 does. The best '80s turbo cars must have been capable of ungodly standing mile acceleration....
yes, Nelson Piquet saw 352km/h on the Monza straight in 1987 and he was running the same high downforce set-up he used in Monaco... With lower downforce (which might have been risky) I guess 380km/h+ (240mph) would be possible. Insane.

@godanselmo You're right, but without research possibilities!! All teams will have a 1,5 lt 4 cylinders turbo engine, with a pre-determined turbo pressure, that is another Formula NOIA (i.e. boredom)!! This isn't the way to get closer to real fans of F1!! I need different cars with different engines!!
"yea but, too bad it's dropping down to 4 cylinder engines"
Well true there'll be no V6 turbo, bugger that. However lets not forget BMW's F1 turbo engine was a 4 cylinder back then. I wish there will be choices of engine architectures, just like back in the old turbo (inline 4 and V6) and also 3.5L NA era (V8, V10 & V12). I actually prefer I5 turbos over I4s and wish engine suppliers can have either I4, I5, V6 or even I6 for the next turbo era.
What a great video of a great driver. A career cut short by tragedy in 1982. This video is NOT sped up. That is how these cars raced. They were lighter than a dogsled with nearly 600 hp. And the drivers were fearless. A great heritage.

@c0V3Ro why slow? Those days safe reglaments were not so harsh and car's BHP were about 1200 (like brand new powered up veiron) and cockpit was lighter and weaker (deadly) so back then F1 races were MUCH faster than nowasdays
If you knew at least something about car racing, you would know that your speed doesn't depend on max horsepower, it depends on how much of it you can use. And believe me - nowadays F1s can use all of their power which was really impossible in 80's. And then you would know that you can get some time on straights but you can find 10x more in corners - and that's where F1 excells nowadays. And they weren't lighter in 80's. Nowadays, F1 is 10 seconds or more faster then in 80's.
@flashpeter625 i didnt mean that the car is slower nowadays i am just saying that if Fia would allow the usage of such powerfull engines nowadays even with motor technologies the races would be more interesting, the only 1 problem would be pilot safety and nowadays (2010) cars are slower then couple of years ago (2007)
@obeybosss I disagree. more power wouldnt have any impact on the racing. it would make the dirty air effect worse, the cars would still be doing the same speed through the bends, and would make the cars even harder to contro
Take Moto GP. the 800CC bikes today are faster than older 1000CC bikes because they are eaiser to control, less ragged and less vicious.
@dienkonig33 The 800CC are harder to control and a lot more vicious then the old 990's, but not so bad as the old 500. A good indicator is the number of high sides
There faster because the tires and electronics are better. Corner speed is much more important then top speed.
More power doesn't mean harder to control. It's the way the power is delivered that matters.
the engines they have now are 2.4 Litre V8s, 4 valve/2 cam Naturally Aspirated. produing 780 BHP. 2.4 litres in a Chavs golf will produce less than a 1/6th of that.
so the FIA let them have the last 4 Cylnders back = 1000BHP
so, the FIA let them turbochage = 15/1700 BPH.
Then the FIA take the minimum weight limit off the engines = Ferrari will spend a fortune making the blocks out of Solid Magnisium, and this 1750BHP engine will weigh less than the driver.
@dienkonig33 BHP will be restricted to 600BHP... They will use 1.4L... The incredible scream the engines are producing these days will disapear with the V8 2.4 engines.
I'm not against it, but I doubt F1 will be this special anymore...
The best F1 action ever. However the title is wrong - only Reanault was using 1.5 litre V6 turbo engine in this season. They were the first ones to discover turbo's abilities (since 1977). All other teams used athmospheric 3.0 litre engines - most of them Cosworth V8, Ferrari had flat-12, Alfa had V12 or flat-12 and Brabham used Cosworth V8 and Alfa's engines. Turbo era started in 1982/1983 when half of the teams (the richer ones) used turbo engines.
From a time when racers were allowed to race. Now when someone like Schumacher is even slightly aggressive in defending his position, we have uproar. The old heroes of F1 would've done the same thing, because they had guts!
Watching this makes me think that Gilles Villeneuve thought it was going to be business as usual as he approached Jochen Mass from behind in Belgium. His last thought was probably "Merde!".
@turboslag "gay boy" nonsense? Besides the idiotic homophobia, do you think you could turn up and drive an F1 car for the impending 2011 season? Asides from this fantastic incident, please name another moment in F1 history when drivers were so combative. Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve never had a fight like this after the race ever again; so are they "gay boy" nonsense?
In 2010 the field in qualifying was seperated by less than 8 tenths of a second in qualifying. Gay boy nonsense.
Although it's difficult to recall every moment of scintilation from the F1 old days, mainly due to there being so many, there were lots of titanic battles, real edge of the seat stuff. Which is in distinct contrast to F1 now, as per the example you give, a close qualifying is cause for celebration ! You are deluded if you think F1 now can compare with past F1, particularly the 70's & 80's, possibly the early '90's. BTW, R U gay ? LOL !!
@turboslag No I'm not gay, I'm just not a Grade A Cunt like you evidently are.
My indicating how close qualifying is was to show how competitve F1 is; more so than it has ever been. Obviously this went right over your head as you are so exceptionally idiotic. Judging from your writing style "BTW, R U gay ? LOL !!" - only a complete fucking wanker would write in such a way.
You clearly know nothing about F1 and are too busy looking at the past with rose tinted glasses to see the truth.
@turboslag yer true but thing is its not realy the drivers folt is it :/ i mean do u think if the rules dident change and F1 stayed dangorse and like real racing there wood be no drivers ofc there wood be the drivers dont get 2 pick heaps of people make fun of the drivers saying O they woodent do this but :/ if F1 never changed then they probly wood just coz they r use 2 saftly and stuff they woodent its the dam guys who run F1 that make all the rules that rnt driver that stuffed it all up
The baallllss at 0:38 ! Gilles knew that Arnoux was faster but didn't know the meaning of giving up. He fights like crazy for 2 laps and manage to finish in front...
I'm a huge f1 fan but has only been following the sport religiously for the past 2 years. I'm excited about turbos making a comeback as I have never experienced watching turbo f1 cars. I would rather the v10 but anything besides the boring v8 is be alright with me.
those people have big balls and or a death wish standing on the track like that knowing these 2 guys are weaving all over the track trying to pass each other!!!!
racing was great in those days now its follow my leader ..try indy car or nascar its more exciting..F1 is going to loose a lot of fans if they dont get there act together
I'd give anything if this horseshit music would just go away and be replaced by the sound of thes fabulous cars!!!
The BMW formula one four cylinder turbo engine of 1.5Liters (92 cu. in.) reportedly could make 1,200 HP (!) in race trim and nearly 1,500 HP in qualifying trim and with the turbo lag of the day was nearly impossible to drive.
Today's F-1 cars are making about 800 HP with good throttle response and driveability.
Speed of the video was altered, increased, just look at the original footages elsewhere... Nowhere as fast as it shows here...

I need different cars with different engines!!
clarck82 1 year ago
@godanselmo But they're going down from V8's to V6's now....
ShockWaveTom 1 year ago
@ShockWaveTom Not V6, inline four which in my opinion is better option.

@godanselmo yea but, too bad it's dropping down to 4 cylinder engines.

I actually prefer I5 turbos over I4s and wish engine suppliers can have either I4, I5, V6 or even I6 for the next turbo era.
godzillat6 11 months ago
@godanselmo It's only gonna be a 1.6l straight-4 though :/
Slashbag69 9 months ago
@godanselmo But they are 4 cylinders with a decreased rev limit..... 12000 rpms nly.....
boo123p 7 months ago
@boo123p its actually 1.6L V6 turbo limited to 15,000rpm. I think this is a quite happy medium.

What a great video of a great driver. A career cut short by tragedy in 1982. This video is NOT sped up. That is how these cars raced. They were lighter than a dogsled with nearly 600 hp. And the drivers were fearless. A great heritage.

@c0V3Ro why slow? Those days safe reglaments were not so harsh and car's BHP were about 1200 (like brand new powered up veiron) and cockpit was lighter and weaker (deadly) so back then F1 races were MUCH faster than nowasdays
obeybosss 1 year ago
@obeybosss
Nowadays, F1 is 10 seconds or more faster then in 80's.
flashpeter625 1 year ago
@flashpeter625 i didnt mean that the car is slower nowadays i am just saying that if Fia would allow the usage of such powerfull engines nowadays even with motor technologies the races would be more interesting, the only 1 problem would be pilot safety and nowadays (2010) cars are slower then couple of years ago (2007)
obeybosss 1 year ago
@obeybosss I disagree. more power wouldnt have any impact on the racing. it would make the dirty air effect worse, the cars would still be doing the same speed through the bends, and would make the cars even harder to contro
Take Moto GP. the 800CC bikes today are faster than older 1000CC bikes because they are eaiser to control, less ragged and less vicious.
dienkonig33 1 year ago
@dienkonig33 The 800CC are harder to control and a lot more vicious then the old 990's, but not so bad as the old 500. A good indicator is the number of high sides
There faster because the tires and electronics are better. Corner speed is much more important then top speed.
More power doesn't mean harder to control. It's the way the power is delivered that matters.

@obeybosss
the engines they have now are 2.4 Litre V8s, 4 valve/2 cam Naturally Aspirated. produing 780 BHP.
Its a Stupid idea.
dienkonig33 1 year ago

The old heroes of F1 would've done the same thing, because they had guts!

turboslag 1 year ago 30
@turboslag "gay boy" nonsense? Besides the idiotic homophobia, do you think you could turn up and drive an F1 car for the impending 2011 season? Asides from this fantastic incident, please name another moment in F1 history when drivers were so combative. Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve never had a fight like this after the race ever again; so are they "gay boy" nonsense?
In 2010 the field in qualifying was seperated by less than 8 tenths of a second in qualifying. Gay boy nonsense.
MrThreshold2009 1 year ago
@MrThreshold2009
You should get a sense of humour !!
LOL !!
turboslag 1 year ago
@turboslag No I'm not gay, I'm just not a Grade A Cunt like you evidently are.
My indicating how close qualifying is was to show how competitve F1 is; more so than it has ever been. Obviously this went right over your head as you are so exceptionally idiotic. Judging from your writing style "BTW, R U gay ? LOL !!" - only a complete fucking wanker would write in such a way.
You clearly know nothing about F1 and are too busy looking at the past with rose tinted glasses to see the truth.
