Great scene but this is not how evil truly operates.
The true psychopath, whether in a corporation, government, church, etc., will go to GREAT lengths to keep their psychopathy concealed. Stalin for example was said to have a charming avuncular manner, hence the nickname "Uncle Joe." So Hollywood gets this wrong. The truly evil want more than anything to be considered "normal." They practice in front of the mirror, take acting lessons, whatever, so that people can't see the monster inside.
@DoNotCiv Well also that applies to the fact that people see Good vs. Evil in different ways. But Stalin never tried to conceal his psycopathy. He murdered his own people without mercy. But back to the point. To a murderer or child molester, they are perfectly normal. Or in some cases, they are the "good" guys. But of course to society they are scum. But you know, Evil is live spelled backwards!!!XD
@MrCitizenXII Oh yes he did. Look at how he turned on the charm with Churchill, Roosevelt, and most of all Eisenhower. Eisenhower was completely fooled by Stalin. He couldn't imagine in his wildest dreams that there were Gulags in the USSR many times worse than Hitler's death camps. Churchill wised up towards the end of the war but the were all taken in by Stalin's charm.
When I saw Gary Oldman in the starting credits I was looking for him throughout the the whole film and was unable to find him. When I saw he played Zorg I was like O.o
i just love gary oldman! he gives life to every character he acts! he is a freakin genious!!!!! i just wish for all new actors to look up to gary oldman, cuz basically their acting SUCKS! gary, go on and teach those kids some acting
@GiuliaLennon94 If I recall correctly he'll be starring in a 2011/2012 film so he should have a good chance there. The shame is the academy won't recognize him because he's always in these supporting roles.
@Maddolis But poor Gary ç.ç If he'll win the oscar, it could be "not the first"...He should be given the oscars for "Dracula", "Léon", "Fifth Element"... EVERY film *-*
@cartmanfan0316 It's sort of arguable that this isn't applicable to the Broken Window Fallacy. Because obviously, He has broken his own glass. I think just because the Broken Window Fallacy exists, doesn't make it true. Money doesn't always get spread around without proper motivation for somebody to do so.
This is besides the point anyway, Gary Oldman is an incredible actor, that is the only conclusion that should be drawn from this video.
@YourPalHDee You can think whatever you want. The fallacy is explained very, very well, and no one has ever countered it in a logical fashion, despite many greater minds than either of us giving it a try. History and common sense dictate that progress is more than enough motivation for money to move around. Fixing what's been needlessly broken does not contribute anything to the whole.
BEHOLD! There's a facebook group "Get Gary Oldman On Inside The Actor's Studio!!", join and get him there! :) The series in absolutely brilliant if you are interested in anything that has do to with the art of acting, especially if you want to hear your admired thespian talk about their craft. Personally, I'm fervent to hear him talk on that show :]
Wow, Ian Holm really owned Zorg with just a few sentences. It's one thing to have the villain give off one of their "psycho speeches" and be all Hannibal Lecter, but it's good writing that allows the hero to totally demolish their speech in a way that isn't lame.
At the same time, he proves that the Chaos Theory might just as well work against him when he chokes on the cherry since he couldn't have predicted that. Then again, he could have simply been more careful. Then again (again), he could have simply Heimlich'd himself. What exactly did he expect the elephant thing to do for him, though?
What he says actually makes perfect sense from both an idealist and realist perspective, both artistic and scientific simultaneously at the same time. Hail Invader Zorg!
By the way, I want a pet mini-elephant thing like the one Invader Zorg has! XD
I loved finding this online. It describes perfectly the business I work in and have tried numerous times to use it to explain to people what I do. Now I can just come on to Youtube and show them. I was just doing a training session for a new employee and used it. What a hoot!
Gary Oldman should have been nominated for thousands of roles and should have won all of them. I mean just look at him in Leon, 5th Element, and last but not least Immortal Beloved, he becomes Beethoven. Gary Oldman you ROCK bigtime EVERYtime :)
Villains are usually hated and unlikable but this guy is awesome even though he creates insane weapons (ZF-1) and kills innocent people due to boredom! he is just... awesome :D
I'm sure this was the idea behind the oil spill. And yes I'm suggesting the spill was intentional. If you think it was an accident, then may your blind obedience earn you a slave of the month award someday.
"You saved my life. And in return I'll spare yours... for now."
I love that: Save his life and Zorg won't kill/ torture you like he planned to. But don't "bring him his Stones" or "get on the plane" & he'll blow you up. What a simplistic fella.
Yeah, the Broken Window theory is a fallacy all right, but it works great for the politically well-connected.
If Zorg's bribed cronies in government have given Zorg the exclusive contract for fixing those broken windows then Zorg has every reason to arrange for them being broken...
"There you see now how all your power counts for absolutely nothing. How your entire empire of destruction comes crashing down all because of one little cherry." Epic line and beautifully delivered. They has such great actors in this film, why did it not receive a little more acclaim?
Zorgs argument about destruction is based loosely on Frederic Bastiat's "Parable of the broken window". or "Broken window fallacy". Interesting stuff look it up on Wikipedia.
