Apparently, someone named Jose Arguelles invented a "Mayan" calendar based on 13 months, 28 days ea in 1990 called the "Dreamspell" calendar. The 12/21/2012 date is based on that calendar.
Calleman's Mayan calendar - and also the Mayan elder's calendar ends on 10/28/2011. Don't know where the 70's date came from.

@BOULDERDP I mean what we thought was going to happen, why they thought it was going to happen, and why it didn't happen. People thought technology was going to faill because of a number sequence. They thought, when the year switched from 99 to 00, it was going to cause major equipement failure. People just made it seem as if we proved something was going to happen, and it was nothing predicted. 2012, however, has pretty much been proven. Our poles are shifting, which is what its all about

@Shakmastershake I read in the paper that last years natural disasters were the worst in 30 years. However, the magnetic north pole is always moving around and shifting (due to the core of the earth moving I think). I hope something positive happens around "raising consciousness" etc. Like they say, what you pay attention to is what you are conscious of. I am not really a new ager but Carl Calleman has some interesting books and ideas although I don't agree with them 100%.

We don't have to stop the countries from going nuclear, We don't even have to fight against it, because when you fight against something, that goes stronger.. the best way to fight against what you don't want is supporting its opposite, so instead of trying to stop it, we have to think about peace.. anyways, the importance of this new dawn is the big change in the humanity, I think that with this transition the human being will be "improved" into a more pure conscience
