  • I think you waste a lot of wood that could be made into charcoal using this method.

  • that why I burn scrap wood/ pallet.

  • the biggest problem I have with that method is that it takes a lot of wood to get it started. But if it will make a better end product. I'll do that when I get a steady supply of wood.

  • it does take a good amount of wood to start, but if you can get used wood pallets that's a good source of wood to use as fuel.

  • Where can i buy a bag of soft wood charcoal??? anyone please respond =D

  • This appears to be a "retort" method of making the charcoal. That pipe looks like it has been drilled to allow the internal gases to combust making a self sustaining reaction, no?

  • You are correct. The direct method seemed like more baby sitting than I wanted to do.

I will find out how finished product looks when I get home today.

  • yes the retort method gives much purer and hotter charcoal than the direct method as the charcoal is never exposed to oxygen

  • The charcoal will burn hotter? That seems odd that it would be hotter as a result of oxygen exposure....

  • i mean it's not pre-burned, thus longer burn time
