There's one problem here: The first open shot is done on the quinto, not on the tumba. Everyone who doesn't play merengue make that mistake. Second, this is only one of many rythyms that are used in merengue.

Not quite, there is no muff just Closed Slaps, Base and Open tones. O=open on the big drum. On the 7th note which is a bass keep you left hand there for the closed slap including the next cs (ie 1st note) after the open. Slow motion 1st nice n easy, master it then start playing around and have fun with it.
