I would have thought the caboose would be on the back ,either because the train was carrying Dangerous goods or there was some sort of gate or barrier to close at which ever area the train had to pass through(To save a long walk for the trainman who had to close the gate. The crew on the engine doing the unlocking/opening.The man in the caboose closing the gates after the train had passed through).Or both reasons
Bring back the caboose's! there so beutiful no train looks as good as a train with a caboose! + it's much safer with a caboose the chance of a runaway is much smaller! must I remind you of CSX 8888 in 2001???? that's what i mean so take the caboose back!! + the fret ( Little stick with light) are damn ugly!!!
Main reason they got rid of them was money. Cut crews from 3 to 2. As for safety ask the crew when then have to walk a mile long train instead of meeting in the middle.
I don't have to ask a crew. I've been a rail ops supervisor for about 25 years and spent my share of the time walking those cuts.
You are right that it is a money issue, not a safety issue. Trains are no safer with a caboose than an EOT. Indeed, crew injuries riding on the rear of the train were high due to slack action. With no one there those injuries go away.
Unions pushed the safety issue. But there were never stats to back that contention up. Railroading is not safer with them.
BRING BACK THE CABOOSE!!!there are several reasons to do so! 1 is safety. rear breakman can spot trouble. and 2 It juys looks right.that stupid little lite stick sucks
That caboose look like it only comes out on warm sunny days!

I saw a couple of cabooses coupled together at the Ensel CSX yard in Lansing Michigan last year. Both pretty
rusted looking.
JSTONE9352 2 years ago
Yeah I saw a string of about 15 in Jacksonville from the auto train a couple years ago and they looked like they were just rusting away.

That caboose and the safety train cars are all owned by MCVX, which stands for Massachusetts Call Volunteer Firefighter's Association.

Well, it's been said that the "F" in FRED can stand for something else other than "flashing".......

Statistics prove you wrong. It is not 'much' safer with a caboose and the chance of a runaway is not much smaller.
Sorry.
If what you said was true the railroads would not have abandoned using them.

i know what the tank cars haul, but what do they haul in those 'caboose' cars? :)
Bring 'em back; they can stick FRED on the back of the caboose, if they want 'em that bad

It's... a CABOOSE! Way cool! Thank you for posting. Haven't seen one on a real train in many years...
I suppose the plural of 'caboose' would be 'cabeese'- :)
