He needs £300,000 for treatment and only has about £60,000 at the moment so anything that gets people to donate is a huge help. Here's how this works: someone in charge of One Direction's PR campaign decided it would look good for them to record a birthday message for that kid (probably after receiving a letter about it). All well and good. After it's recorded they would have gotten in touch with ITN, or some other site, and told them about it. I don't give a damn about One Direction, but their handlers are disgusting.
